Fun With Linescores: The Ramones Edition

Elias:
The Tigers scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth inning in their win over the White Sox. It's only the third time in the post-World War II era that a major-league team has scored one in the first, two in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth, and each time, it's the Tigers who have done it. They went 1-2-3-4 in the first four innings at Fenway Park on September 23, 2001, and did the same thing against the Orioles on September 7, 1977. And if you are interested, no major-league team has ever gone 1-2-3-4-5.

  1. This is also 4 times that the amount of runs scored by a team in a particular inning corresponds to the number of that inning in the game (i.e., 4 in the 4th, 7 in the 7th, etc.). I have no idea what the record for that might be, maybe 4 is it. (3 happens quite a lot.) Could a team have done it in 5 different innings?!?

  2. I think I know the answer to this, but has a team ever scored 1/2/3/4/5 in five consecutive innings NOT starting with the first inning?

  3. I doubt it.

I wish Elias was a little more forthcoming with the info here. Only back as far as post-WW2? I want more info! They must have it since 1913 (the BRef Era).

  4. Two other instances of 1-2-3-4:

    Pirates, June 4, 1925
    Pirates, May 29, 1943

  5. Both of those Pirates 1-2-3-4 games came against the Phillies.

  6. Less than two weeks after that June 4, 1925 game, Pittsburgh started off a game on June 16 against the Giants with a 1-2-3-3 linescore!
