David Ortiz gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the third inning [last night], the 60th run he has knocked in this season in just his 65th game. Ortiz is the first player to reach 60 RBIs in a season in 65 or fewer games at 40 years or older. Only one other player did so in 70 or fewer games at that age; Harold Baines reached 60 RBIs in 69 games as a member of the Orioles in the 1999 season (also at 40 years old).
I'm amused by the fact that almost every statistic quoted by Elias this season about Big Papi relates to it being his "40 and over" season. What he's doing is amazing, no doubt, but you can almost read it as: "hey, look what the old fart can still do... amazing!"
Please, please, PLEASE do not get swept by the Pale Hose
John Hand, WEEI:
"Against the White Sox, Porcello is 10-8 in 21 career starts with a 4.09 ERA"
Because what he did on July 26, 1999 facing Jim Thome, Scott Podsednik, and Jermaine Dye has actual relevance to today's start.
