[Presented with the caveat that pitchers' records are stupid and meaningless-JoS] Rick Porcello lifted his record to 14-2 when he went the distance as the Red Sox downed the Angels, 6-2, in Anaheim. Porcello joined Stephen Strasburg (14-1), Chris Sale (14-2) and Chris Tillman (14-2) as pitchers with 14 wins in their first 16 decisions this season. Only one other time in major-league history have as many as four pitchers won at least 14 of their first 16 decisions in the same season. That happened 106 years ago, in 1910, when future Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson and Chief Bender did it, along with Deacon Phillippe and King Cole.
The Dodgers won a wild game over the Diamondbacks, 9-7, in which the Diamondbacks grabbed a 7-3 lead by scoring seven times in the seventh inning, only to have the Dodgers return fire with five runs in the bottom half of that inning. Friday night's game was the 19,602nd for the Dodgers since they entered the National League in 1890, but it was only the third in which their opponents scored as many as seven runs in the top half of an inning and the Dodgers responded with at least five runs in the bottom half.
On July 18, 1957 - the team's last year in Brooklyn - in a game at Ebbets Field, the Cardinals scored seven times to take a 9-4 lead in the top of the ninth but the Dodgers scored five times in the last of the ninth, capped by a grand-slam home run by Gil Hodges. Brooklyn went on to win, 10-9, in 11 innings.
The other such game came on April 19, 1890 - yes 1890, in the Dodgers' first game in the National League, played at Boston. In the third inning, the home team (which chose to bat first in that game, as was sometimes the case in the 1800s) scored eight runs while Brooklyn answered with six. Boston won, 15-9.
The Tigers scored a season-high total of runs in rolling over the Astros, 14-6, on Friday night. The Astros maintained their record of never having won a game in which they allowed at least 14 runs. Houston is now 0-74 in such games. The only other major-league team that has been around for at least 50 years and has never won such a game is the Mets (0-62), who came into the major leagues along with Houston in 1962.
Jake Odorizzi pitched six and two-thirds innings without permitting a run or a walk in the Rays' 5-1 home victory over the Yankees. In his last start, a week earlier at Oakland, Odorizzi went eight innings without allowing a run or a walk. No other pitcher in Tampa Bay's 19-year history in the major leagues has allowed no runs and no walks in back-to-back starts.
