The Mariners shocked the Red Sox with five runs in the eighth inning to clinch a 5-4 comeback victory at Safeco Field. It's the second loss for Boston this year in which it held a lead of four or more runs in the eighth inning or later. The Red Sox also blew a four-run lead in the late innings on May 28 against the Blue Jays. The only other team with multiple losses of that kind this season are the White Sox, who have also lost two such games.
Fernando Abad absorbed the loss in his Red Sox debut after allowing a go-ahead three-run homer to Robinson Cano, who was the first batter he faced. Abad is the first pitcher in Red Sox history to take a loss in his first game with Boston after entering the game in relief and allowing a go-ahead home run to the first batter to face him.
