The Rays scored four runs in the first and added five more in the sixth and beat the Royals by a score of 12-0 on Wednesday night. In major-league history, only two other teams at least 20 games under .500 shut out the defending World Series champs while scoring 12 or more runs: the Boston Braves against the Pirates in 1926 (14-0) and the Cubs against the Phillies in 1981 (14-0).

"In 47 road games, the Sox have been held to two or fewer runs more often (14 times) than has occurred in 59 home games (13). And it is these sorts of low-scoring games that the Sox have been ill-equipped to win this year. They have won just two games (2-25) all year when scoring two runs; they are the only team in the majors without a win when scoring three runs (0-6)."

Hanley Ramirez had better range of motion in his sprained left wrist. He was set to take some swings in the batting cage, and the Red Sox remain hopeful he will return to the lineup for Friday night's series-opener at Dodger Stadium against his former team.

Red Sox LF/C Blake Swihart is getting a second opinion on his ankle sprain from foot/ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. Swihart's rehab hasn't progressed as smoothly as he hoped.
