The Yankees are sinking, and the Red Sox are running away

Usually the first week of July is far too early to write a baseball obituary but if the Yankees continue to limp at the start of the second half like they did home from Texas on Sunday night, it's going to be a miserable three months in The Bronx. The Yankees can't try to hide their glaring holes much longer
After flushing a victory Saturday night, the Yankees absorbed a lethargic 8-1 loss to the Astros on Sunday in front of a sold-out crowd of 41,761 at Minute Maid Park. ...
That recipe led to the Yankees' 14th loss in 19 games and dropped them three lengths back of the AL East-leading Red Sox. It's the farthest they have been out of first place since they were 3½ games behind and in fourth place on April 8 with a 1-4 ledger. ...
When the Yankees beat the Angels on June 12 they held a four-game cushion over the Red Sox. In the span of 19 games they have gone from four up to three back. ...

The coffin corners can't continue. ...Luis Severino burned by two-out hitting as Yankees drop series finale to Astros 8-1
While the Astros were as hot as the 93-degree temperature outside the park, the Yankees corners are cold, and so is the team. The Yankees have lost 14 of the last 19 games as they have fallen three games behind the Red Sox in the AL East.
The Yankees had Chris Carter at first base and Chase Headley at third. Carter's struggles at this point are off the charts ... Carter struck out three more times Sunday and owns a stunning 76 Ks on the season with only 36 hits over 179 at-bats. ...
The Yankees cannot continue to run Carter onto the field with these struggles. You cannot start every game with guaranteed strikeouts in your batting order. ...
First and third base are your power positions in the infield, cornerstones of the offense. They cannot be headstones.

After collapsing in stunning fashion on Saturday night, the Bombers lost 8-1 to the Astros in the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Minute Maid Park. ...
The Yankees ... are 5-14 since starting 38-23. ...
"I think we're in a frustrating part of our year," Joe Girardi said. ...
There's still half a season remaining, but with the Red Sox winning on Sunday, the Yankees are now three games out of first in the AL East. On June 12, the Bombers led the division by four games over Boston. ...
The Yankees are 2-10 in one-run games since June 4, and have already blown 15 saves over their first 80 games.

Who doesn't love MFY misery?
Only idiots!
(A few days ago, I debated whether to devote a post to Fowler's injury. I still decided against it, though I did include a link at the end of that day's game post. He didn't actually die or anything, so I'm not completely clear why I balked. Touted MFY rookie makes his debut, sustains season-ending injury in the top of the first inning! Hilarious!)
