Since 1969, Team With Most Wins Has Won World Series 12 of 54 Times (22%)

This chart states that the team with baseball's best record has won the World Series only 25% of the time. It's worse that that. In some seasons, two teams tied for the most wins, so it's actually 12 of 54 "seasons" - or 22%. (I did not include 1994.)

The performance (or non-performance) of any of those 54 teams has zee-ro effect on how the Red Sox will do this month, but it does show that shit can - and quite often does - happen. I think Billy Beane would concur.

Which is why I think it's important to feel that this season has been enormously successful (and a ton of fun), no matter what happens in the postseason. To claim that 2018 will be for naught if the Red Sox do not win the World Series is to succumb to the nonsensical Steinbrennerian dictum that a season without a championship is by definition worthless.
