The tone for the day was set in the opening inning when the first four Rays singled off Eduardo Rodriguez (5.2-7-4-2-7, 101); two of them scored. In the bottom half, Boston put runners on second and third against Blake Snell (6-5-1-1-7, 105) with no outs, but failed to score as Xander Bogaerts, Michael Chavis, and Eduardo Núñez all struck out.
The bottom three hitters in the Red Sox's lineup - Jackie Bradley, Sandy León, and Marco Hernández - each had two hits. ... The Red Sox went 1-for-13 with RATS and left nine men on base.
AL East: The Yankees blew an early 5-0 lead and lost a 6-5 edge in the ninth inning, but rallied to beat Cleveland 7-6 in 10 innings. New York and Tampa Bay are tied (at 40-24) atop the division, with the Red Sox (34-32) in third, seven games out. Boston hosts the Rangers for four games this week.
