Guess The Count #7 - With Hunter Wendelstedt

Hello again, everybody, and welcome to Guess The Count!, the umpiring game where we give you the pitches and you make the calls. Test your skills as an arbiter against those of a real Major League Baseball umpire.

Today's man behind the plate is Hunter Wendelstedt and we will be looking at the Rangers/Red Sox game of Monday, June 10, 2019. So make your guesses and then see how you matched up against our big-time ump. One explanation before we start: There are no tricks. All of the pitches were taken by the batter; he did not swing at any of them*.

Ready? Let's begin! Red Sox starter Chris Sale is facing Danny Santana in the top of the sixth ... and it's time for you to ... guess the count!

*: One exception: Santana swung and missed the fourth pitch above.

Check the comments for how Wendelstedt called the pitches. ... How did you do? Do you have what it takes to be a major league umpire? If not, better luck next time!

Finally, we'd like to thank today's sponsor: Acme Robotics!

And that's all for today from ... Guess The Count!

  1. Sale versus Santana: cbbsb. Wendelstedt said Santana checked his swing on the 5th pitch. (He did not.) Santana singled to left on Sale's 6th pitch, driving in the Rangers' first run. He should have struck out three times before that.
Pitch 3 (on 0-2) should have been called strike three.
Pitch 4 (on 1-2) should have been swinging strike three.
Pitch 5 (on 2-2) should have been swinging strike three.
But Wendelstedt allowed Santana to single on an 0-5 pitch.

Workman versus Forsythe: cbbbc. Forsythe lined out to first.

Workman versus Odor: bcb. Odor took another ball and grounded out 3-1.

  2. NESN's zone does not indicate very well how far into the strike zone Pitch 3 was. Look here.
