G27: Red Sox 8, Orioles 5

Red Sox - 012 032 000 - 8 9 0
Orioles - 000 000 230 - 5 8 0
Rafael Devers, J.D. Martinez, and Xander Bogaerts hit home runs, Michael Chavis drove in a pair of runs, and Colten Brewer (4-3-0-2-2, 71) had his best outing of the season. It all added up to Boston's third consecutive win. The Red Sox have hit six home runs in those three games.

In the sixth inning, the Red Sox announced it had traded relief pitchers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to the Phillies for right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta, 27, and minor league hurler Connor Seabold, 24. Both newcomers were assigned to Pawtucket. Pivetta was born on Vancouver Island (!), British Columbia, and is under the Red Sox's control for the next three seasons. Seabold was a third-round pick in the 2017 draft.

Bogaerts led off the second with his sixth homer of the year. Martinez (celebrating his 33rd birthday) belted his third dong in the third, to dead center (431 feet), with Kevin Pillar aboard. With two on the fifth, Devers pounded his fourth home run halfway up the section of seats in right-center (447 feet, exit velocity: 108.1 mph). Chavis broke an 0-for-11 skid with a two-run single in the sixth. (Alex Verdugo extended his hitting streak to 12 games, a career high.)

The Orioles whittled the 8-0 lead down to where it was a little uncomfortable. Josh Osich gave up back-to-back dongs to Pat Valaika and Cedric Mullins in the seventh. Osich was an out away from escaping the eighth with a man on first, but he issued his second walk of the frame and Chance Sisco belted a three-run shot.

In the ninth, Mullins bunted for a leadoff hit against Matt Barnes. Hanser Alberto lined out to second and Barnes threw a wild pitch. Anthony Santander flied to right and Renato Nunez grounded to shortstop.

Darwinzon Hernandez made his first appearance of the season, pitching the fifth and sixth in relief of Brewer. His command was good and he hit 97 with his fastball, striking three and allowing one hit and one walk. Ron Roenicke: "Coming out today for the first time, he threw some nasty pitches. You see the swings they take and the bats that break. It's really good stuff. It was fun to see him back."

Jim Salisbury, NBCSPhilly:
The Phillies are in active talks with Red Sox to acquire closer Brandon Workman. Not final. But I hear multiple players are involved in proposed deal.
Peter Abraham, Globe:
#Phillies have been inquiring about a number of different #RedSox relievers in the last week. My understanding is that all of the Sox primary relievers (Workman, Barnes, Hembree, etc.) are readily available.

  1. Workman and Hembree have been decent relievers, no ? Why this fire sale, with the return seeming to be mediocre?
