Dan Martin, Post:
One strike away from taking a series lead that would have left them one win away from the ALCS, the Yankees instead saw their patchwork bullpen go up in flames in the bottom of the ninth of a 6-5 loss to the Guardians.
Clarke Schmidt allowed a game-winning, two-run single with the bases loaded to Oscar Gonzalez, and after Saturday's Game 3 ALDS loss, now the Yankees must win Game 4 at Progressive Field with Gerrit Cole on the mound to keep their season alive. . . .
They're in the spot largely because the shorthanded bullpen couldn't finish the victory, as Boone called upon Schmidt to replace Wandy Peralta in the bottom of the ninth instead of Clay Holmes.
Boone said he didn't want to use Holmes, who threw 16 pitches in Friday's win, on back-to-back nights, saying he would be putting the right-hander "in jeopardy" and that Holmes was "compromised," since he just came off the injured list due to a strained shoulder.
Holmes, though, indicated he was ready to pitch.
The results without him were catastrophic. . . .
Kristie Ackert, Daily News:
The Yankees season is on the brink. The Bombers' bullpen coughed up a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth Saturday night and Guardians right fielder Oscar Gonzalez hit a sharp grounder through second base to walk off a 6-5 win over the Bombers in Game 3 of the American League Division Series at Progressive Field. The Guardians take a 2-1 lead into Sunday night's — do-or-die for the Yankees — Game 4 of the best-of-five-games series. Entering this postseason, the winner of Game 3 in a best-of-five postseason series tied at 1-1 has gone on to win the series 71.9% of the time, 47 out of 51 times. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Myles Straw's short fly ball off Wandy Peralta dropped in front of a diving Oswaldo Cabrera and got behind him. As he was picking it up to throw it in, Straw to second base. Steven Kwan singled and Yankees manager Aaron Boone went out to the mound to bring in rookie right-hander Clarke Schmidt, not closer Clay Holmes.Former Mets prospect Amed Rosario lined an RBI single into left field off Schmidt to cut the Yankees' lead to a run. Jose Ramirez lined another single over the shortstop to load the bases.Naylor [struck out for the second out before Gonzalez] walked it off with his grounder past a charging Gleyber Torres.
At the most critical moment of this Yankees season, the only thing Clay Holmes threw Saturday night was his manager under the bus.
Aaron Boone said his closer was "capable" of pitching in Game 4. But "I felt like he was in jeopardy" if the righty was used for the second straight day and third time in four days after enduring a shoulder strain late in the season.
Holmes said he never conveyed that he was not available to his manager or anyone else with the Yankees. Instead, he explained multiple times that he "woke up [Saturday]" prepared to pitch and "I was ready to go and pitch if needed."
He was needed. The pivotal Game 3 of this Division Series was slip, slip, slipping away under the unrelenting offensive jabs of the Guardians. But instead of Holmes — who never even warmed up in this game — Boone stretched Wandy Peralta to a third inning after the lefty had retired the last batter of the seventh and gone 1-2-3 in the eighth.
But a couple of hits off Peralta led Boone to turn to Clarke Schmidt, who — at best — straddles the line of the Yankee manager's circle of bullpen trust. The Yankees began the ninth with a 5-3 lead. They lost 6-5. The Guardians lead two games to one and Gerrit Cole might have to pitch a complete game Sunday night in Game 4 to save a threadbare bullpen and rescue this Yankee season. . . .
Yankees Game 3 starter Luis Severino, who is back from his own late-season injury, said: "He's our closer. So of course I was surprised. I don't know if he was down. There shouldn't be people down in the playoffs. That's something you guys need to ask Boone or [pitching coach Matt] Blake to see what was going on there."
Did there even need to be a Holmes decision? Or did the Yankees not do enough to avoid this. The Guardians pecked away at Severino over the first two innings and Domingo German wamed up as six of the first 10 Cleveland hitters reached safely and produced two runs. . . .
Isiah Kiner-Falefa misplayed a ball in the first and sixth to lead to runs against Severino. In the ninth — for a second straight game — the left-field novice Cabrera could not reach a floater in front of him. Kiner-Falefa threw to the wrong base and ninth-place hitter Myles Straw had a one-out double. A Steven Kwan single convinced Boone Peralta had endured enough.
But now there was no Holmes to try to extinguish this. Schmidt was greeted by two singles to make it 5-4 with the bases loaded. He struck out Naylor and got ahead 0-2 on Oscar Gonzalez. He stuck with a fourth straight slider, got too much of the plate and Gonzalez slashed a two-run single up the middle to win the game.
Cleveland took this win without using the best of its pen. They are all available Sunday. Who knows about Holmes and the best of the Yankee crew? Who knows what lingers when Boone and one of his key pitchers are not in agreement on what was such a pivotal day on the Yankee calendar.
The Yankee season is on the line 24 hours after disaster on the field and disarray off it. Can the Yankees find relief for it all?
Aaron Boone is being ABSOLUTELY ROASTED by MFYfans online.
It's fucking glorious!
If you're a psycho like me and you're up at 3:30 in the morning & looking for some good reading, I suggest you type "Aaron Boone" into Twitter's search bar and just start reading. You're welcome
Aaron Boone says Clay Holmes was only available in an "emergency" tonight
This guy thinks it's April 18 @AaronBoone please leave
Bases loaded with 2 outs in the 9th in a best of series tied 1-1 is not an emergency according to Aaron Boone.
ITS THE FUCKING PLAYOFFS EVERYTHING IS AN EMERGENCY. HAVE SOME URGENCY FOR ONCE YOU PATHETIC CLOWN FIRE AARON BOONE
How many more Octobers must I scream FUCK YOU every time I see Aaron Boone in the Yankee dugout? How many? I am livid. #Yankees #YankeeBaseball
Every time I think it is figuratively and literally impossible for Aaron Boone to be a bigger fuckup, he goes and pulls some shit like this.
Make Aaron Boone take the SATs. I want to see what he gets.
And this has been another certified Aaron Boone Moment.
Don't worry, Yankees: Only one more loss until Aaron Boone gets fired. And Aaron Judge probably leaves.
Yesterday Aaron Boone unnecessarily asked Jameson Taillon to make the first relief appearance of his career. He didn’t record an out
Tonight Boone asked Clarke Schmidt to get a two-out save with runners on for the first time in his career. He blew the lead
Manager of the year!
I have no clue what Aaron Boone was doing with his bullpen. Yanks had a 2-run lead entering the 9th, used two pitchers but didn't use their closer. Guess he's saving him for next season, when thankfully Boone won't be around.
How is Aaron Boone still employed. Seriously. Giving him a contract extension is top 3 worst decisions in the entire history of this organization
If Aaron Boone hits a double instead of a homer he's working at a Kinkos right now.
HILARIOUS
