G79: Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 4

Followed last night's win online at work for six innings, missed Manny Ramirez's two-run homer and David Wells's ejection on my way home and watched the final innings and a half on NESN.

Not much to report. With the bullpen in the state that it is, I'm sure Terry Francona did not want to pull Wells in the fourth inning, even though he began the frame: double, groundout, walk, single, single, single. Boston trailed 4-0 at that point, Wells had thrown 82 pitches and (I think) Abe Alvarez was warming up. But Wells suddenly got it together, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters on only 32 pitches.

Keith Foulke, who surrendered two two-out singles last night before closing the door, has changed his entrance music from Danzig's "Mother" to Hank Williams Jr.'s "Country Boy Can Survive." Foulke: "It's the beginning of a new [era]. If you listen to the words of the song, you'll understand." Some of those lyrics:
I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive ...

Because you can't starve us out
And you can't make us run
Cause one of 'em old boys raisin' ol' shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma'am
And if you ain't into that we don't give a damn
"Mother" still seems more appropriate:
Tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words
What they mean
What they say
Matt Mantei has three options for the ligament sprain in his left ankle (injured April 25 at Fenway Park against the Orioles): surgery (which would end his season), a less invasive arthroscopic procedure (six to eight weeks) or a cortisone shot (three to four weeks) to reduce the inflammation. Mantei: "I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. It's not going to heal itself."

The Herald has a lengthy transcript of Michael Silverman's recent interview with Pedro Martinez.
MS: So is the negativity here [in New York] different than Boston?

PJM: Hmmmm, I don't think Boston should be (negative) anymore.

MS: There's not so much now.

PJM: It's got to be boring in Boston nowadays.

MS: They've cut them some slack.

PJM: They're in first place and they won last year, they have a real good chance of repeating. Must be boring, the media must have nothing to do.
