Tick, Tick, Tick

Gordon Edes's source says: "No Progress".

AP:
Lucchino and Epstein left the building where the offices are located shortly before 7 p.m. EST and it was unclear when or if they would return.

"It's here [Henry's plane] in Southern California and it will leave on Wednesday morning," Epstein said. "We hope Matsuzaka-san will be on it so that we can complete the physical in Boston in time to get a contract done."
Edes:
Daisuke Matsuzaka was not present, according to a source with first-hand knowledge of the negotiations. ... If I had to guess I'd say the total guaranteed money in the Sox proposal is in the $40 million range, with performance bonuses that could make it worth considerably more. ... How long will the sides talk? My source said that it's possible they'll talk right up until John Henry's plane leaves for Boston tomorrow morning.
SoSHer 941827:
This is a fascinating study of negotiation techniques. Let's assume that DM has told Boras that he will not, under any circumstances, return to Japan. How far can Boras push the envelope? ...

Will Boras tell DM that the Sox FO "getting on the plane" in the morning is a ruse similar to the guy who walks off the used car lot only to return a few minutes later with his "final final" proposal? Will he be right? ...

These are master manipulators at work. Assume nothing until midnight tomorrow night.

  1. This D(a)M drama is such fun. I keep hearing movie and TV lines playing in my head. You know "Show me the money!" and "Look boss - de plane, de plane!"

Last minute the deal will get done and it will be a "new record" - perhaps $11.50 per beer.

Ok - it is Wednesday and I am taking Redsock's advise. I am heading into the woods and cut down trees so the Treasury department can print Boras's commission check!

    You gotta love it!

  2. If Boras cared about his client, he would tell him to go play for a pennant contender in Boston now and be happy with a contract level that a major league rookie really doesn't deserve.

You're forgetting one very important fact, Jack.

Boras gets a cut of DM's contract. The more money DM gets, the more money Boras earns. It's as simple as that.

  3. both you fellows are forgetting the major point...Boras is a player agent...Greg Zaun represented himself in his negotiations with the Blue Jays and said he'd never do it again as he never realized how "dirty" the business is...Boras is a agent, they operate by different set of rules, then society especially the good ones as Boras is...he cares not about the Red Sox, maybe a little more about Matsusaka but more about the system, setting a precedent, and the long-term implications for himself...it's a big picture scenario, for him precedent setting..so he'll sacriface at the front end if necessary too collect on the back-end as he has enough players in his stable to keep his cash-flow going at the present....he cares nothing about the Red Sox

  4. If Boras cared about his client, he would tell him to go play for a pennant contender in Boston now and be happy ...

It's stuff like this that feed into the media meme that Boras is a greedy devil preying on hick players fresh off the boat that need to be told what to do with their lives.

Boras will NOT be telling DM to do anything. He will lay out what he and DM asked for and what the Sox have offered. Then DM will weigh that against returning to Japan. He may ask Boras some questions, but in no way will Boras "tell" Matsuzaka what to do.

I've read similar comments about arbitration hearings, where the team says its player is a pile of shit and deserves nothing.

  5. Boras knows that, and is still denying it.

Kind like how politicians knowingly lie to us every single day about every topic under the sun. It's pretty common, yet nothing much happens because of it. Some people swallow the lies and some see it for the bullshit it is.

So Boras is full of crap and what he's telling the media isn't true.

    And?
