O's Slap Dice, Drop Sox

Daisuke Matsuzaka got roughed up a bit by Baltimore this afternoon: 4-6-4-0-3.

He allowed two home runs: a solo shot by Jon Knott in the third and a 2-run blast by Jason Dubois in the 4th. Three of the 4 runs were earned (Dice committed a throwing error).

Youkilis, Lowell and Manny each had two hits for the Sox, who lost 5-3. Julian Tavarez faced 11 batters in 2 hitless innings; he walked four. Joel Pineiro threw 2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits.

  1. According to the AP he was working on high strikes. I think he found out it is better to keep the ball low and get first pitch strikes.

  2. Could be. I watched a little of the game at work, but not enough to tell if that was what he was doing.

While Dice should know that low is better than high, he could be testing the limits of the MLB v the Japan strike zone. He talked about the difference after the BC start, if I recall.

  3. Cervasio said that Schilling was talking to him after today's game, and one of the things they talked about was the difference in the strike zones.

  4. I wouldn't worry about some guy named Jim Knott hitting a homer against Dice.

And this is coming from a Mets' fan. Frankly, I don't know what that means but it must mean something...right?

  5. I think it was Jon Knott--but I only remember because I commented on how it rhymed with Don Knotts. Or maybe I just WANTED it to rhyme with Don Knotts. (very possible) Either way, the guy had been 0 for 12 before that. Which made me worry, but only a litle bit.

  6. You can worry about DiceK's mistakes, the Sox leaving 10 guys on base or the looming ides of March.
