Guthrie has pitched only two career innings against the Red Sox (April 27, 2006), allowing one run and striking out two in relief for Cleveland. Beckett started that game as well and did quite poorly (9 runs in 3.2 innings). Ben Broussard had 8 RBI, leading Cleveland to a 15-3 win.
Yea, I'm not really understanding this whole put the two worst on-base guys at the top of the order.

ReplyDeleteThis is why I didn't understand why anyone was putting faith in Beckett. You can't ever rely on him. Either he's injured, or ineffective, so why trade a plus plus player for his services? It doesn't make any sense now, and it didn't make any sense then.
Hanely was in AA at the time with attitude problems. There was no way that anybody thought he'd turn in as much production as he did.
ReplyDeleteJosh Beckett was an All-star; a proven one at that. Yea, last year I hated it, but Beckett has made the necessary changes to get back into old form.
I don't know how you can criticize Beckett who has the best record in the majors and absolutely magnificant numbers.
The only reason you're against the trade is because Hanely turned out to be pretty damn good and Beckett had his career-worst year.

No ben, the reason why I'm against the trade is because I was right all along. I said Beckett would have a 5 era, which he did, because going from a horrible division in a pitcher's park to a hitter's park in the best division is a major change.

I would've rather had Buchholz or Bowden and Hanley (and Meredith, and Gonzalez...) than Beckett and Lowell. Or, with the money saved, we could've gotten a LAIMer for the last slot, and with the increased offensive production of Sanchez and Hanley, it probably would've evened out.
As I know you know, relief pitching can vary wildly year to year. Meredith has allowed 20 hits in 19 innings this year (4 walks) for a 3.32 ERA.

These are problem signs, at least to me. Thank god we can spend $150m. Even if Hanley drops, say, .40 points, that's .300/.370/.500. Let's say a massive change of 60, .280/.350/.480. Still a huge difference over Lugo.
And, more importantly, all of those players have much greater upside than those we received. This is not good.
The deal shouldn't be judged after. You have to judge the deal at the time the GM made the deal with the knowledge and mindset he had at that time.

The point is that at the time Beckett meant more to us than Hanely and Buchholz, who could easily have both become busts and still have that chance.
Sean, Lowell's OBP was .339 last year. Not great, but 19 points higher than you claim.

ReplyDeletecan you not see the massive improvement he's already made this year in contrast to last? you hear it everywhere, but he has become a pitcher--not a thrower. he's just 27 years old on the 15th. and i would rather have a 27 year old starter with GREAT stuff and a bright future in the red sox rotation than a ss any old day of the week. pitching always means more, it always does. it's value goes lightyears beyond any batter you can stick in a lineup. it is more revered as well.

When he gets back, what does he do? Does he go back to throwing the fastball 90% of the time with a 5 ERA? Or do we get him for 150 IP with a 3 ERA?
Or, do we take advantage of Krivsky being an idiot and flip him for Dunn and EdE?

ReplyDeleteNothing happens in a vaccum, as you said, so if one of those deals doesn't happen, it puts the certainty of the others happening in question.
I approved of the Pena/Saturn deal. Brandon was a league average pitcher. In 2005, he and Clement were identical. (We got him off waivers, so there's a good deal that gets overlooked.) I wasn't that keen about Krapler or Willie Harris as our 4th OF.
I approved of the Beckett deal (I would have dealt Hanley and Sanchez for only Beckett; Lowell's bat has been gravy).
I was lukewarm on Lugo, but there wasn't much else out there. I might have stayed with Seabass, but didn't he want 2-3 years?
And personally, yes, I would like $40m!

Any other player - or commenter - may have similarly disgusting areas of his personal life, or not. Let's not assume if you don't sign Julio Lugo, your lineup is free of abusers.
That's why when you're judging players' relative worths, it's best to stick to baseball.

Dunn fans more often than Pena. You'll be throwing a lot of shit at your TV if he's hitting #5. (He walks, but he also hit .234 last year (and .215 in 2003).) And he made 12 errors in LF last year.

Sean - WPA graphs in realtime over at http://www.fangraphs.com/livescoreboard.aspx. Also, I think you're completely nuts in your assessment of the Beckett trade. Every pitcher - every PLAYER - is always an injury risk. You never know who's going to take a line drive to the shin or pull a muscle. Frankly, I'd rather have a great pitcher who needs to come out early every 8th start or so than a mediocre pitcher who can throw CGs but gives up 5 runs every time. Beckett gets blisters every once in a while... not the end of the world. I remember reading somewhere that it's a result of eczema and the med staff has come up with some solutions to treat the eczema to prevent (or at least greatly reduce) the blistering. I'm guessing that over the course of the whole season it won't be a huge deal.

Deadline -- I have a fax copy of the front page of a Maine paper that mistakenly printed the AP's early story, which had the Red Sox winning 5-3. Had 98% of it written after 9th innings, was just waiting to slug in the first paragraph, saw the two 10th inning runs and sent it on.

Jolting shock when checking scores online. Just picking up the pieces now. So Hinske scores winning run from 2nd on dropped throw after grounder to Millar. Gotta be a better word than 'walk-off' for this. Anybody not thinking these guys will be doing this in October?

Looks like Manny sits tomorrow with hamstring tightness. Of the 5 games I'll have seen, Pena's started in 3 of them I think, with interesting results. At least the difference between Pena and Manny vs. the difference between Pena and Drew/Coco are drastically different.

Okajima's ERA+ is 902.

(By comparison, Papelbon's ERA+ last year was 500. Pedro's best ever season was 285 (that is the greatest season of all time). 100 is league average.)
So, is Sean actually a Red Sox fan or not? I don't think I've heard one positive thing about this club from him, even though they've opened up this massive lead in the east.

Like clearly fans will disagree with things an organization does, I'm pissed off at the Bruins now, I couldn't even name more than a couple players. But they suck. We have the best team in baseball, and i havent read one good comment by sean about this club.
he puts down everyone, says we shouldve done this and that...this is just boggling to me because apparently, for the first time in history, hindsight is not 20/20.
i really dont think theres anything that the red sox could do to make this fan happy.
