500 For Slappy

Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th career home run this afternoon. He is the youngest player to reach 500 homers:
               YRS DAYS
Alex Rodriguez 32 8
Jimmie Foxx 32 338
Willie Mays 34 130
Sammy Sosa 34 143
Hank Aaron 34 160
Babe Ruth 34 186
Ken Griffey Jr. 34 211
Slappy hit #500 in his 1,855th game. Only two players took fewer games to reach 500: Mark McGwire (1,639) and Babe Ruth (1,740).

Slappy is the third player to hit his 500th as a Yankee. Babe Ruth hit his in Cleveland on August 11, 1929, and Mickey Mantle did it at Yankee Stadium against Baltimore on May 14, 1967. He is also only the third player -- along with Reggie Jackson and Darrell Evans -- to hit 100 home runs for three different teams: Seattle (189), Texas (156) and New York (155).

  1. Phil Hughes got slapped around by the Royals (4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R) -- raising his ERA from 3.38 to 5.87 -- but the MFY lead 11-6 after six.

  2. It's an impressive accomplishment at his age - especially since he's not just a power hitter.
