G138: Red Sox 13, Blue Jays 10

Not a pitchers' duel.
Blue Jays - 100 008 100 - 10 16 1
Red Sox - 302 503 00x - 13 16 1
Through four innings, both Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia had scored three runs each. Toronto battled back, battering Dice and Javier Lopez in the sixth, but Boston immediately regained enough of its cushion for relievers Hideki Okajima, Mike Timlin and Jonathan Papelbon. (box)

Mike Lowell reached base in all five of his plate appearances, including a three-run dong in the first (which gave him 100 RBI) and singles in the sixth and seventh. Every hitter in the starting lineup had a hit -- and everyone but Coco Crisp scored a run.

7 GA and a Magic # of 18 (any combination of Boston wins and MFY losses totalling 18 = Red Sox winning the East title). ... Watch out for jumpers on the George Washington Bridge!

***

This afternoon in the Bronx: Seattle 7, New York 1. Billy: 4-8-5-1-2, 62. Followed by Mussina: 3.2-7-2-0-1, 62. For the Mariners, Felix went 7-5-1-4-5, 114.

Red Sox 6.5 GA.

***

Jesse Litsch (3.40, 136 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.88, 117 ERA+)

In 10 starts since late June, Litsch (whose Gameday photo frightens me) has a 2.48 ERA. Last Tursday, he held Oakland to two runs and four hits in six innings.

Matsuzaka allowed five runs in 6.1 innings aganst the Yankees in his last start. The Red Sox have lost each of his last four starts (5-6, 5-6, 1-2, 3-5). Matsuzaka has walked a lot of guys lately -- 25.1 IP, 20 H, 14 BB, 22 K, 4.97 ERA -- but only three of those 14 walks have scored. Opponents are hitting .222/.330/.367 against Dice.

The Chokers (6 GB and closer to third place than first) begin a series at home this afternoon against the Mariners, who have lost nine in a row after winning seven of eight. It's Felix Hernandez (4.08, 104 ERA+) / Fat Billy (4.15, 104 ERA+). New York is 2 GA of Seattle and 3 GA of Detroit in the wild card standings; Toronto lurks 5.5 GB. The Tigers are off today.

  1. If anyone is watching the MFY or the Stems, feel free to post your observations.

I just found this link at BR -- download the 2007 Complete MLB Record Book for FREE!

  2. I'm going to try to watch the Mets game and probably listen to the Yankees on the radio. Fingers crossed that I'll get a connection. My computer can be choppy sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Ichiro lined a base hit off Clemens to start the game.

    A good start indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  4. But then, of course, Vidro grounds into a 5-4-3 DP. We'll see what happens. Guillen K's, inning over.

We'll see how they rebound in the top 2nd.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Jeter singled between Damon and Abreu strikeouts, then A-Rod came up and batted him in with a blooper over short. 1-0 mfy

    ReplyDelete
  6. After getting into a jam (men on 1st and second, 1 out), Aaron Harang strikes out Beltran and Delgado...

    And here comes Pedro.

Seattle's got 1st and 2nd on Clemens, Johjima batting.

  7. Quick observation. Take a look at some of the better Yankee blogs (waswatching, no maas, lohud). You'll find comment about the awful Tampa series, conjecture about Mussina's future, condolences to the hard-luck Andy Phillips. But one thing you won't find? A single mention regarding the Sox.

Things seem a bit different around here. And it reminds me that to be a Red Sox fan is to define yourself not only in terms of your team, but in terms of the Yankees as well. In other words, it's The Joy of Sox (Relative To Whatever the Yankees Are Doing).

    Which I find odd.

  8. Pedro's fastball today is between 82-84 to start. He served one to Alex Gonzalez who shot it over left field to the base of the wall. 2nd and 3rd, 0 out. (lead-off hitter Hamilton hit a little squibber that died in the grass)

Griffey hits a sac fly, scores Hamilton. 1-0 Reds.

Seattle tied mfy at 1. Didn't hear how it happened. Yay multitasking!

Brandon Phillips just hit a single to score Gonzalez... 2-0 Reds.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If King Felix can shut down the Yankees, the M's should be able to get to Clemens.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Pedro just threw a fastball in there at 88

    Blah, blah, blah.

I don't speak for all Red Sox fans. I write what I want. Other bloggers write what they want.

Your definition of what constitutes a Red Sox fan means nothing to me.

  12. Alou knocks one out to left to put the Mets on the board. 2-1 Reds, top 2.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Watched the Pedro 1st. A couple of hard hit balls (one from Seabass) and an infield cheapie -- and a near out at the plate.

Sigh -- I agreed with the FO's decision, but I still miss him.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ichiro Dong!

2-1 Seattle to start the top of the 3rd.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sigh -- I agreed with the FO's decision, but I still miss him.

I certainly miss the Pedro of old. I don't think today's Pedro would be able to fare very well facing AL batters.

Fastest fastball so far that I noticed from Pedro was 89.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Pedro threw a good change right there.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Harley:

I have no interest in any Yankee blog, even the "better" ones. And boy, does that statement reveal a lot about you. Cheering for the Red Sox and wishing abject failure on the Yankees is just normal and in no way "defines" anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  18. One thing about Pedro is he will change speeds with the fastball. His first strikeout was on an 82 MPH fastball. Then there's 88.

Pedro has just struck out his 3,000th batter.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Standing ovation for Pedro in Cincinnati. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. My "I know" was about Pedro's pitching abilities in 2007.

I saw seven years -- with 1999 and 2000 being the best back-to-back seasons any pitcher has ever had. That'll have to do!

When discussing good MFY blogs, not listing Replacement Value or Bronx Banter, but mentioning NoMaas is, quite frankly, bizarre.

    ReplyDelete
  21. RS, if there's any one game that Pedro pitched that you'd like to see again, which one do you think that would be?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oof. David Wright just knocked a 2-run dong. 3-2 Mets.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Beltré is at second with 0 out, Top of the 4th. Broussard up.

Mike Mussina is in the bullpen. Not sure if they'll use him or not.

    ReplyDelete
  24. RS, if there's any one game that Pedro pitched that you'd like to see again, which one do you think that would be?

The 17 strikeout game in New York (September 10, 1999).

Laura and I were supposed to met someone she knew outside the Toilet. He had the tickets and apparently got stuck at work and never showed up. We took the subway back home and got in around the 4th inning. Watched the rest, then rewound the VCR (which I had set) and watched the innings we missed.

Our seats were not going to be very good -- upper deck down the LF line -- but damn. I wish I had been there.

One great stat from that game is that the Yankees did not hit a fair ball on any of Pedro's last 52 pitches!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Mike Mussina is in the bullpen. Not sure if they'll use him or not.

    Use him! Use him!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would also have liked to have been at 2004 ALCS Game 5 -- probably the best game of that post-season.

    ReplyDelete
  27. One great stat from that game is that the Yankees did not hit a fair ball on any of Pedro's last 52 pitches!

    Wow. That's amazing.

I think I remember seeing that game (but not well enough), but if you ask me, the game that I would want to see again would be Game 5 of the ALDS against the Indians.

4-1 Seattle on a two run double by Yuniesky Betancourt!

    ReplyDelete
  28. The first out of the 6th inning was the last fair ball they hit that night.

I still have the VHS tape somewhere. Everyone there was standing and cheering at the end (55,000+) -- everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Game 5 of the ALDS against the Indians. 1999

Saberhagen and Lowe gave up 8 runs in the first three innings before Pedro came in from the bullpen and threw 6 hitless innings, walking 3, striking out 8, allowing the Red Sox to rally back and beat the Indians, 12-8.
    _______
Ichiro hit an RBI single, scoring Betancourt. 5-1 Seattle after 3.5

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mike Mussina is warming in the bullpen.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I got in the shower with the score in the M's game 1-1; the Yanks had two on and no out in the bottom of the 2nd. I checked afterwards to see how many runs they'd scored and it was 2-1 M's in the fourth! The the 3-run fourth...nice time for them to remember how to play some baseball. Even if they can't get back in it themselves, it'd be great for them to take a game or two from the Yanks here.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah, I remember that '99 game. Back in those days TV-38 Friday night Sox games were the only non-Blue Jay games we got (outside of FOX Saturdays). Pedro was so damn good that night, it was like he had the ball on a string. I hate Chili Davis to this day.

M's pouring it on 5-1, keep it rolling.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was 12 years old in 1999, so I certainly don't remember much at all. I remember some bits and pieces. I remember the all-star game. That would be the second game I'd want to watch. But everything after the 1999 playoffs until the 2003 season was pretty much a blur for me.

I guess I had other things to worry about. Kid things.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And 2 dongs and 7 RBI from O'Leary.

Sox were down 0-2 to Cleveland but won two games in Fenway 9-3 and 23-7 to force a fifth game.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Andy Phillips is going to have surgery tomorrow on his wrist. Out for 4-6 weeks, which essentially is the rest of the season unless the Yankees dip more than just their feet into the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  36. the other thing about the 1999 game 5 is that pedro's back was hurting him like hell (he pitched only 4 innings (3 hits, 0 runs) in game 1).

i remember reading that in game 5 he said he felt like crying out in pain after every pitch. he threw 97 pitches in those 6 innings.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Aaron Harang is batting with men on first and second and 1 run in, Bottom of the 4th, 2 out.

    Harang K's.

    4-3 Mets after 4

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mussina's pitching for mfy in the top of the 5th. Throwing about 89ish.

Guillen hit a 1 out double. (bullet over damon's head in left)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was in Thailand in 1999 and could not find any baseball on satellite TV, had to read little box scores in the paper.

I find that I follow the Yankees closely and that it's part of being a Red Sox fan. At least for me. I'm aware that it's a little weird, and in a way is almost like being a Yankee fan. But, so be it. It's all baseball and I like baseball. I also follow the Braves, Giants, Rockies, and A's with varying qualities of emotional investment.

The only Yankee blog I look at sometimes is Replacement Level; I do so because it's interesting and statistically oriented (which I'm not). I see some very in-depth and (largely) intelligent conversation about the Red Sox. The Yankee fans I know are also up on the Red Sox, so I don't find any ring of truth to what Harley says.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The only Yankee blog I look at sometimes is Replacement Level; I do so because it's interesting and statistically oriented (which I'm not).

    And you like pie charts!

    ...

In 1999, I was working on the 1918 book and was more than a little scared the Red Sox might win it all before I was done. It was a very weird time for me.

    ReplyDelete
  41. To me, it's part of the rivalry. You want to know the "enemy" as well as you know yourself.

I think it's also a different feeling on the Red Sox side of things. The Yankees will always feel like Big Brother to me--like they've always got the edge. So when the Red Sox are beating the Yankees, whether it be in a game or in the standings, it feels better than against any other team.

You think about it: Bigger city, bigger payroll, bigger stadium. A Yankee fan may be more inclined to expect the Yankees to beat the Red Sox (or catch them, in this case) to the point where they may or may not even follow the Red Sox as much. But I wouldn't know because I'm not a Yankees fan and I don't know any Yankees fan enough to know how they feel on the matter.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Pedro's made it through 5 innings. Maybe the mets could make him 1-0 today. 4-3 Mets still.

    ReplyDelete
  43. RS, I have Joe Castiglione's call of the 9th inning of Clay Buchholz's no-hitter as well as the post-game interview on WRKO. Finally figured out how to get it onto my computer.

Wow. There were men on first and second for Seattle. Jose Lopez bunted, Mussina fielded, threw to third, got the lead runner. But then, A-Rod fired to first and got Lopez. The ol' 1-5-4 DP. Cano covering.

But that doesn't stop Yuniesky Betancourt from hitting an RBI double over Damon's head.

    6-1 Seattle.

Download link for Buchholz 9th inning audio

    ReplyDelete
  44. I cut up the big 22 MB (16 minute) file for the 9th inning. I have the 9th inning itself, cutting off the interview, as well as just the final inning, just the final pitch, and just the interview with Buchholz.

  45. To believe that Yankee fans don't concern themselves with the Red Sox is one of the biggest loads of shit in the history of shit.

They've been selling "Boston Sucks" shirts in the Bronx for 30+ years. And "1918" shirts for at least 20 years.

After 2004, they sold some very ugly shirts with lists of the years that each team had won the World Series, "proving" that the Yankees were still "better" than the Red Sox.

They sold shirts announcing they had once again (?) robbed us blind when they signed Noodle.

In 2006, they sold shirts featuring a gravestone after the Red Sox fell apart in August 2006.

If a Yankee fan tells you that Yankee fans don't think about the Red Sox (and think about them a lot), you can best believe that he is totally and utterly full of shit.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ish, when i right-click on that mp3 link, it doesn't work. it tries to save an html file called "message".

    ReplyDelete
  47. There was one anti-Red Sox shirt from the late 1970s that I still find mildly amusing:

    Fisk Eats Rice

    ReplyDelete
  48. RS, have you tried left-clicking the link? It should take you to a download page and the download options would pop up.

But that's strange because I just right-clicked the link and clicked "save link as" and I could download it.

If it doesn't work I could just email it to you if you're interested.

  49. Final line on Pedro:

    5 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 4 K

    76 pitches, 47 strikes.

Schowenweis has pitched an inning in relief. After 6 innings, it's 6-3 Mets.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Not that bad for his first start -- after the first inning.

I look forward to seeing him in October.

    ReplyDelete
  51. RS, what team to you predict (although we know in baseball, anything can happen) will make it to the World Series on the National League side?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Mets have a chance to break the game wide open. Men on first and second, Alou at the plate, score is 7-3.

    ReplyDelete
  53. King Felix continues to shut the Yankees down. 6-1 through 7.

0 runs, 3 hits for Hernandez since the 1st inning.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Tom Gordon's been reduced to a middle-relief role in Philadelphia. It's the bottom of the 7th inning, Atlanta is up 4-1 and Gordon's pitching.

Of course, he did recently come off of the DL.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Clemens today: 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 dong.

    62 pitches, 37 strikes.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Jose Lopez just hit an RBI double. Broussard scores. 7-1 SEA.

8-3 Mets, Top 7 with men at second and third, 2 out.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Mussina's final line: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, K

    62 pitches, 42 strikes.

    ReplyDelete
  58. John McClaren wants this win BADLY. J.J. Putz was warming in the bullpen with a 6 run lead, 2 out in the 8th with 2 men on.

Posada then grounded out to third to end the inning.

I wouldn't be surprised if Putz pitches the 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  59. a nice day's work from fatass.

i'd like to see the mets in the ws.

    ReplyDelete
  60. i'd like to see the mets in the ws.

Me too. The Red Sox and the Mets have been on top of their respective leagues for the majority of the season, and it's only fitting for them to play each other for all the marbles.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Pirates have scored in each of the first 5 innings in St. Louis.

    PIT - 121 25
    STL - 000 0

Bucs still hitting in the 5th.

    ReplyDelete
  62. There are these two kids, about 12 years old or so, in the booth with the Cincinnati announcers. One is a Reds fan, and one is wearing what appears to be a Chicago Bears hat and a Pedro shirt. That kid told them he's a Reds fan, but likes Pedro and wanted to see him get a no-decision. Heh.

Bottom of the 8th in Cincinnati, 9-3 Mets.

J.J. Putz is into the game, it's the bottom of the 9th in da Bronx.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I never follow the NL enough to make any kind of educated prediction.

    The Cubs would be fun.

Maybe have to go watch the bottom of the 9th NY.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Giambi pops out to short, 1 out.
    Cano K's. 2 out.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Milk Dud is gone 6-3... SEATTLE WINS! Thank goodness they break their 9-game losing streak.

    6.5 GA, Magic Number: 19

Seattle is 1 GB to mfy in the wild card. Even in the loss column.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Mets beat the Reds 10-4. Pedro Martinez is now 1-0, and a 3,000 Strikeout pitcher.

    ReplyDelete
  67. To the earlier comment by the transient blogger.

Of course there is no mention on thos other "good" blogs of the sox. That is the Yankees nation problem. They are so high and mighty and can't be bothered by things that aren't in pinstripes. The fun part of being a Boston fan is to enjoy the success of our team which in an organized league is by definition relative to the success of other teams. It is funny how the New Yorkers are so blind to the reality of the game. Even the broadcasters are of this mindset. Squirrel. That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  68. i'd like to see the mets in the WS as well, cause we'd beat them!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Tommorow is gonna be a tough game for the M's. Blow-Ram Vs. Wang.

Earlier this season Wang had a perfect game going against the Mariners through 7 inn.

  70. Wow, 76 comments two hours before game time.

The 17 strikeout game in New York (September 10, 1999).

Laura and I were supposed to met someone she knew outside the Toilet.

I was still a Yankees fan then, and even I appreciated this game. It was a masterful performance. He made the Yankees look like little leaguers.

When Allan told me you asked this question, I knew what the answer would be.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I find that I follow the Yankees closely and that it's part of being a Red Sox fan. At least for me.

This is like living in Canada, the way Canadians follow US news. We have to, as it effects the entire world, and effects Canada very directly. How can we not pay attention to the Yankees? They have been our division rivals for... forever.

The Yankee fans I know are also up on the Red Sox, so I don't find any ring of truth to what Harley says.

    Agreed.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'd love to see a RS-Mets WS! I'd also like to see the Cubs, because it would be a 1918 rematch - i.e., good for book promotion.

  76. So nice to be back on the west coast, where evening games start at 4pm, and I can see the MFY losing before noon, after a week back east. Of course, I was convinced the Sox couldn't win with me away from home after losing 4 in a row. Lucky for me, I have GDGD on my cellphone, and was able to see what was unfolding real-time on Saturday night. I got the kids to bed just in time to catch the 9th on ESPN. What an exciting season!

    ReplyDelete
  77. YES!!!!

Dave O'Brien on Red Sox radio! The Geffstock is over! For now.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Strange: Craig Breslow was optioned to Pawtucket after being called up two days ago.

Globe: "They had him in the bullpen in case Hideki Okajima's hip kept him out, but with Okajima feeling fine again, Breslow is back down."

The PawSox season ended today, so wtf? (Breslow did pitch for Paw today.) Is he coming back?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Uploaded three pictures from yesterdays game you should like its the Hernandez vs Bot, last three pictures at plls

I approve this starting line up boy do i approve of this line up.

  80. Caught a little of Buffy and Rancid on Rogers pre-game. I've had it already. Over to MLB-audio. ish says O'Brien, that is good.

    ReplyDelete
  81. We have no choice, it's Buffyvision for us.

Woti, are you going to any of the Sox series at Skydome this month? We'll be at all the games, and this time without a crowd, so we could concentrate on the game together if you're around.

    ReplyDelete
  82. i hope the yanks get ruined by the mariners.

While I can confirm what redsock said about them having Boston Sucks shirts (and these little black & white signs that said the same) for as far back as I can remember, having grown up going to Yankee Stadium more than Fenway, (as well as the fact that there's always been that "buzz" when the Sox are at the Stadium), I will say that what ish said above IS a fairly accurate description of PRE-2004 Yankee fans. But now they're so concerned with us it's not even funny. I'm not going to go to any Yankee blogs/boards to check if they're talking about the Sox, but I can assure you they're thinking about us right now:)

    ReplyDelete
  84. My boy Ellsbury leading off, yay!

We need a name for him. (That is, besides "my boy".) We'll have to see how things develop.

    ReplyDelete
  85. To further my last post, then I'll shut up about it. So, about harley's "quick observation," what is that called when a person says his people aren't concerned with his rival people AT the rival people's home base? Irony or what? "Hmmm, I'm totally not thinking about the Red Sox right now--I've gotta run to a Red Sox blog and tell them!!!" I wonder if every Yankee fan on that blog who wasn't thinking about the Sox also went to their favorite Sox blog to tell them the news.

    ReplyDelete
  86. We need a name for him. (That is, besides "my boy".) We'll have to see how things develop.

Blur. He runs so fast that's all you see.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Jere, you took the words right outta my mouth - only you were more eloquent than I would have been. Good stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I will say that what ish said above IS a fairly accurate description of PRE-2004 Yankee fans.

That is ALSO what I was about to say! Exactly. Pre-2004, pretty true. Now, no.

OK Jere, we're two for two. What am I going to say next?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Blur is good but we can't decide in advance. We have to let it happen naturally.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Nah, can't make it. My sister is making her annual visit from Florida. Bad timing, but what can ya do. Maybe Jays beat down Yanks for WC and we can catch some AL pennant games at the Dome. (Buffy is quite excited about possible beatdowns).

    ReplyDelete
  91. Oh, too bad. I don't know if you have plans to be out this way in October, but it would be great to watch some of the playoffs together.

    ReplyDelete
  92. WOO HOO NESN!

    grumble grumble ....

jays announcers think they are in the playoff hunt, while also saying the sox "have pretty much wrapped up the division"

    ReplyDelete
  95. Sublime but awkward! Sure, that's exactly...

    Uh, no. I guess we're 2 of 3. :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. buffy: "certainly feels like october baseball"

    Very good!

It's a good nickname, it lends itself to lots of stuff like this.

    ReplyDelete
  138. that's funny, b/c what did paul bunyan look like?

I looked at a couple of pictures of Paul Bunyan... wrong colored hair, Bunyan's got him beat with facial hair. I think the fact that Matt Stairs currently lives in Bangor, Maine got him going, too. But I'm gonna run with it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  139. Scouts everywhere are now revising their rating on Red Sox: Base Running (P) to (WTF).

    ReplyDelete
  146. Of course I knew he's fictional. Doesn't mean he's not real... :P

There's actually a Paul Bunyan head on a tall tree stump about a half mile from where I live.

    ReplyDelete
  147. and then you'll be saying that babe ruth didn't curse the red sox.

    ReplyDelete
  163. i like when former players don't complain about current players' salaries.

i once saw an interview with yogi berra, the writer was trying like hell to get him to say players today are rich and spoiled - but he would not.

he said stuff like, good for them, we would have done the same if we had the chance, players are the game, they deserve to be compensated - stuff like that. i really respected that.
