G162: Twins 3, Red Sox 2

Sexy Lips had a rough first, allowing a walk, single and double before getting his first out. Another walk, a sac fly and a single gave the Twins a 3-0 lead.

After Tavarez got the last out of the first, he threw a perfect second inning on eight pitches and a perfect third inning on 15 pitches. Then Jon Lester pitched a perfect fourth inning (11 pitches) and a perfect fifth inning (nine pitches). Mike Timlin threw a perfect sixth inning (six pitches), Manny Delcarmen pitched a perfect seventh inning (serven pitches) and Eric Gagne pitched a perfect eighth inning (12 pitches).

When Jonathan Papelbon recorded the first out in the ninth inning, it was the 23rd consecutive batter the Red Sox had retired (only three of the 23 outs left the infield). Jason Kubel whacked a ground-rule double to right before Bot got the last two Twins.

Manny Ramirez singled home Julio Lugo in the fifth and Jason Varitek homered in the sixth to bring Boston to with in 3-2.

The Red Sox rallied in the ninth against Joe Nathan. Brandon Moss walked and went to third on Jacoby Ellsbury's single to right (but Ellsbury was caught off first base and thrown out). Julio Lugo walked and stole second and Alex Cora was walked intentionally. Bobby Kielty and Doug Mirabelli both struck out to end the regular season.

The Yankees beat the Orioles 10-4, so Boston finished two games ahead of New York in the AL East.

Matt Garza (3.92, 113 ERA+) / Julian Tavarez (5.33, 90 ERA+)

Sexy Lips makes his first start since August 31. He's pitched only 5.2 innings in four September appearances.

  6. Further to 9casey's wish:

    MLB:

"If the Padres lose at Milwaukee, if the Rockies win at home against Arizona, if the Phillies and Mets each win their respective home games, then a four-way tiebreaker process will be required starting on Monday and lasting through Wednesday.

"In that scenario, the Phillies and Mets will tie for the NL East title, and they will have a play-in game Monday to decide the division champ. The loser would then enter a three-game mini-tournament for which the Rockies, based on head-to-head records during the regular season, would have the option of trying to win at home and then on the road or just once on the road to advance.

"If the Rockies choose to stay home, their opponent would be determined by the wishes of the team with the second-best combined head-to-head record; it'd be the Phillies if they're involved, but the Padres if the Mets drop into the three-way. That team could choose to play at the Rockies on Tuesday, but it's more likely that it would opt for a single game and travel to play the winner of Tuesday's game on Wednesday. If the Rockies opt for the one road game, Tuesday's game would feature New York at San Diego, or San Diego at Philly, with the winner hosting Colorado on Wednesday.

That survivor will be the eighth and final playoff team. There never has been a three-way tiebreaker in Major League history."

    FUCKIN' A!

    1 out

    36 pitches

    ouch!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. couple of things:
i cant believe the mets' 1st inning.

do you think at some point we might see a position player throw a pitch today for the sox?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Luckily it's just the top of the 1st.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I say we see this:

    Lips 4
    Lester 2
    MDC 1
    Gagne 1
    Bot (sans beer case) 1

    ReplyDelete
  12. Can you believe this?

They've FINALLY gotten the third out, and the Fish get a 7 spot.

Let's hope the offense recovers and kills Dontrelle today.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Castillo, 1 out double for the Mets.

    Phillies underway. Padres at 2:05.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nats get a hit but don't score in the top of the first in Philly.

    ReplyDelete
  15. i dont know...i was rooting for the mets, as most of us sox fans do, but then i kinda wanted the phils to make it interesting, then it got TOO interesting...and now this. it'd be really funny just to show how bad tha NL is if all the teams that needed to win, ended up losing themselves into a four-way-tie

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wright: F9, Castillo to third.
Beltran: Infield single, little dribbler in front of the plate. Castillo remains at third.

    Corners, 2 out. Alou.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wild pitch and Castillo comes home.

    7-1

    ReplyDelete
  18. Infield single to 6 from Alou...

    Corners, 2 out.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Delgado gets HBP.

Bases loaded, 2 out. And Delgado's hurt. Hit him on the wrist.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Gotta check comments faster! ish'll set a record today.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't get it. Why are we fielding a real lineup today?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Delgado stays in the game. Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  23. WSH 0, PHI 1, Bot 1st, man at third.

    ReplyDelete
  24. well, we're off monday and tuesday.

also tito said pre-game (acc. to the globe) that the lineup probably will be much different by inning #9.

    ReplyDelete
  25. In the who gives a fuck dept.:

    NYY: 1
    BAL: 0

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ramon Castro hit one onto the left field warning track with the bases loaded. Almost had a granny.

    FLA 7, NYM 1, END 1st.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Bases are actually empty in Philly right now.

Again, the things that need to happen for a four-way tie:

    San Diego loses to Milwaukee.
    Mets beat the Marlins.
    Phillies beat the Nats.
    Rockies beat the D-Backs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's cool to put Wang and dong in the same sentence, but what about granny and dong? Not sure about that!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Delgado comes out of the game now. Jeff Conine replaces him at first base.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jorge Sosa's got to pitch the game of his life for the Mets and keep the Marlins from scoring further.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ish, are you flipping channels on EI? only internet? both?

    i'm curious.

(on a day like today, the ei package is a godsend.)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sosa starts it off right. K's Miguel Cabrera.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've got the game on NESN, watching the Mets on the internet, and keeping tabs on the Phillies on ESPN scoreboard.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i know you werent asking me, but i agree my ei package feels like its paying for itself today.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think 1908 almost ended in a three-way tie.

    Chi Cubs 99-55 .643 --
    NY Giants 98-56 .636 1 GB
    Pirates 98-56 .636 1 GB

There is a fairly recent book about that season that won a big SABR award. By Cait Somebody.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It helps to live in NESN's viewing area.

    ReplyDelete
  37. todays game will be very interesting to watch to see what crazy shit tito does in this couldn't matter less game.

    ReplyDelete
  38. JORGE SOSA strikes out the side!

    ReplyDelete
  39. NESN on MLBTV -- one last time -- and then I won't have to hear Remy hawk his shit for six months.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Another good thing about living somewhat near Boston: I'll be able to listen to Red Sox radio throughout the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i see the mlb post-season package includes audio of live games and then archived games but all the games are blacked out when they are played.

i was thinking i could follow a ds game or two at work, but it appears that it would be only radio and gdgd.

may have to take some 1/2 days here and there.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It'll be a full bench effort for the Mets. Anderson Hernandez set to be the first pinch-hitter after Milledge's at-bat.

Orlando Hernandez warming up for the 3rd.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Another good thing about living somewhat near Boston: I'll be able to listen to Red Sox radio throughout the playoffs.

I wonder if we could get the CT station in our backyard?? I still need pictures though, so it's grit my teeth and bear the idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The problem with watching on the internet is that it'll freeze on my computer periodically.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Milledge reaches to lead off the 2nd.

    ReplyDelete
  46. not a good start for lips:

    walk
    single
    rbi double

    ReplyDelete
  47. Bottom 2nd in New York:

    BB
    F7
    F8
    BB
    Now batting: David Wright

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wright goes down swinging, and the Mets leave 2.

    7-1 after 2.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dear, MLB:

Please don't schedule any playoff games at Fenway for the middle of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is Rondell White's final MLB game. He's retiring after today.

    ReplyDelete
  51. TBS is broadcasting their final Atlanta Braves game, and this will be the final game for Craig Biggio... and they're in Houston.

    Minute Maid is sold out.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Orlando Hernandez pitching the 3rd for the Mets.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Very nice sliding catch by Beltran, running a long way to his right to plug the gap, then slid on his left hip and made the catch, saving a double.

    ReplyDelete
  54. DONTRELLE WILLIS hits a 2-out triple off Hernandez!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Triple is harmless as Hanley Ramirez goes P2 in front of the backstop.

    ReplyDelete
  56. i wonder who will get the prime time start for game 2on friday: red sox or mfy?

same deal on monday for game 4, if both series go that far? (and wed. for game 5)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Look for the Yankees to get the Prime time starts in Cleaveland and afternoon start at Yankee stadium. Sox will get a prime time for the game in Anaheim.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Moises Alou swung so hard at a pitch just now that he fell on his ass afterward.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ramon Castro has the chance to make this a ballgame again.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Bases loaded for Ryan Howard in Philly.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Castro K's, it's up to Milledge.

    ReplyDelete
  62. 2-run single for Ryan Howard, it's 3-0 Phillies.

    ReplyDelete
  63. 4 pitch walk to Milledge. Bases loaded for a pinch-hitter.

    Paul Lo Duca.

    ReplyDelete
  64. And now Dontrelle is coming out of the game! Freddy Gonzalez has seen enough, and now it'll be a bullpen side for both times. Logan Kensing to the rescue.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Good thing this game means nothing. 3-0 twinkies after 1, oh well, back to watching the cowboys!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. lips gets the twins on 8 pitches in the 2nd. much better.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Mets fans chanting, "Paul Lo Duca."

    ReplyDelete
  68. Lo Duca goes 1-3... Little tapper to the mound on a check swing.

    They've left 8.

    7-1 after 3.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Top of the 4th at Shea... Scott Schowenweis on the bump.

    ReplyDelete
  70. WSH 1, PHI 3, Top 4th
    SD 3, MIL 0, Bot 2nd

    ReplyDelete
  71. Quick 1-2-3 inning for Schowenweis.

    ReplyDelete
  72. ARI @ COL starts in about 15 minutes. Their game won't matter if San Diego wins... Arizona has already clinched the NL West.

    ReplyDelete
  73. David Wright hits a 2-out single to left in the 4th.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yeah, the games do not appear to be trending toward the massive tiebreakers with Philly and SD winning.

Must be one of the all-time low points in Glavine's career (and there aren't that many).

    ReplyDelete
  75. Beltran: L6.

Mets have now left 9 men.

    7-1 after 4

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yeah speaking of Who Gives a Fuck Dept., is it natural to really give a crap about how this game is going?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yeah speaking of Who Gives a Fuck Dept., is it natural to really give a crap about how this game is going?

Well, wins are always nicer, but yeah, as long as no one gets hurt.

    I am keeping score though.

I guess the two contest guys are invested in the outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Good point, a win is nice but at least I take comfort in knowing a loss won't provoke an aneurysm.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Single, K, BB in the Florida 5th so far.

    ReplyDelete
  80. A double and now it's 8-1 Fish.

    ReplyDelete
  81. nesn shows a blimp shot of sailboats on the river.

don asks remy if he's ever thought of dong that.

remy says he has no interest in it whatsoever. "i'd rather be in my cave."

    !!!!

"which i'll be in in about 3 hours."

    ReplyDelete
  82. 8-1 Florida and counting.

A friend of a friend who owns a bar in NYC says the mood among Mets fans lately has been ugly. Like, scary ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'd hate to be a Mets fan or a Rockies fan.

The problem is that I wanted the Mets to win the East, and the Rockies to win the Wild Card.

    Crap.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think we're going to be soon welcoming the Phillies as our possible NL East counterpart.

    ReplyDelete
  85. mood among Mets fans lately has been ugly. Like, scary ugly.

Basically our mood if the Sox pulled a choke job like the Mets are pulling.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Joe Smith into the game for the Mets, LHP trying to stop the bleeding for the moment.

    2nd and 3rd, 1 out.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Arizona and Colorado is underway.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Bottom of the 5th at Shea. 8-1 Fish.

    ReplyDelete
  89. So San Diego must lose for the Rockies to have any chance at all of getting a Wildcard spot -- right?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Moises Alou, after hitting one just inches foul down the right field line, strikes out. 1 out in the 5th.

    ReplyDelete
  91. So San Diego must lose for the Rockies to have any chance at all of getting a Wildcard spot -- right?

    Right.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Well the Cowboys are well on their way to being 4-0 for the year and I see that nothing much is really going on in this game. Lester in for the Sox?

Does Lester make the play off roster for the DS? Heard Remy on the pregame saying the Sox will only have 10 pitchers?

Ish - good job with the updates bud!! I can't believe how bad Glavine was at the start of the Mets game.

Slugo from the hole - runs please!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Lester is for the 4th.

    Jones - F8
    White - K
    Lecroy -

    ReplyDelete
  94. Castro K's.

    1 - 2 - 3 for the Mets.

    They're running out of outs.

    ReplyDelete
  95. nice play at short for the 3rd out!

    ReplyDelete
  96. WSH 1, PHI 3, Top 6th
    SD 3, MIL 0, Bot 4th
    ARI 0, COL 0, Bot 1st

    ReplyDelete
  97. 2 on, 1 out in the top of the 6th for Cody Ross.

Joe Smith pitching for the Mets.

    Double
    Intentional Walk
    1 out

    ReplyDelete
  98. Tying runs on for the Nats with Austin Kearns batting in the Top 6th in Philly.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

  101. Pedro Feliciano coming in with 2 on, 2 out for the Mets. Gotta get a huge out or else.

    ReplyDelete
  102. lester with two perfect innings, 20 pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  103. wait if sd and col win what happens, sorry im a bit confused

Right now, SD leads COL by a game.

San Diego wins, they clinch wild card.

Colorado loses, San Diego clinches wild card.

The only way Colorado has a chance at the playoffs, is if they win and San Diego loses. Then they'd need to have a playoff game to actually decide to wild card, because they'd be tied.

    ReplyDelete
  104. wait if sd and col win what happens, sorry im a bit confused

Jayson Stark has a good recap here

ITS HOMER INNING way to go Remy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. what the fuck is remy doing -- this "homer" annoucing thing?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Heh. Remy's cheering them on like a normal fan.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Feliciano gets the big strikeout, and they go to the bottom of the 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  108. it is pretty funny.

sad to say, some announcers do this for real.

    ReplyDelete
  109. remy on pedroia: "nobody thought you could play in the first month, now you're gonna be rookie of the year. how about them apples?"

(remy was ripping the F out of pedroia for the entire month of april.)

    ReplyDelete
  110. SD 4, MIL 2, Mid 5th

    ReplyDelete
  115. WSH 1, PHI 4, Bot 6th
    SD 4, MIL 3, Bot 5th
Scoreless in Denver in the 2nd.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Mets don't do anything in the 6th.

9 outs left, presumably in their season.

    ReplyDelete
  117. My computer has let me down. I can't get any mlbtv anymore. So I'll be keeping an eye merely on the numbers and on the radio.

Also watching TBS, who will have immediate updates, considering it greatly affects the TBS broadcasters. Any tie-breaker will be on TBS.

    ReplyDelete
  118. nice touch. tito sending clayton out to take over for doctor with 2 outs so he gets the big ovation jogging off.

    ReplyDelete
  119. MILWAUKEE now takes the lead! It's 5-4!

    ReplyDelete
  120. nice touch. tito sending clayton out to take over for doctor with 2 outs so he gets the big ovation jogging off.

    Agreed!

    ReplyDelete
  121. timlin gets the twins 1-2-3 on six pitches.

  128. Watching what looks to be Craig Biggio's final Major League at-bat.

    ReplyDelete
  130. its must kill mets fans to see those jeter car ads on the local channels between innings right now...of ever...but especially now.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Lots of shit happening in the NL today, eh?
I'm glad we're all comfy and cozy in our places.
Judging from the conversation, SD must own the tiebreaker over the Mets, so NY HAS to win, right?
Oh, by the way - there IS a Red Sox game on isn't there?
    Nice work by Lester

    ReplyDelete
  132. sox subs:

    ReplyDelete
  133. 5 years from now it will be interesting to listen to the Biggio HOF debate (not one imo).

    ReplyDelete
  134. Craig Biggio grounded out to third in his final at-bat. They'll probably take him out of the game in the 8th. Huge standing ovation, obviously... Atlanta's pitcher, Ron Mahay, stepped off the mound and gave the crowd and Biggio as long as he needed.

When Biggio went back to the dugout, Mahay stepped off the mound again as the crowd beckoned Biggio for a curtain call. Very emotional. Very nice moment.

Classy move by Mahay, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Ryan Howard hits a dong, and it's now 6-1 Phillies in the bottom of the 7th.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Craig Biggio has just been lifted in Houston. Went out to second base, and is now called back. Stands in front of the dugout, waving his cap to the fans, his fellow players, the umpires, tears streaming down his face... The Houston dugout has emptied, and it's now a receiving line for Biggio, as he gives each and every one of them high fives and hugs, and now steps away from his team, salutes the crowd, walks slowly down the stairs into the dugout, and down the steps into the tunnel.

And thus closes a fantastic major league career. Craig Biggio.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Ryan Howard hits a dong, and it's now 6-1 Phillies in the bottom of the 7th.

If this score holds Rollins is vindicated

    ReplyDelete
  138. Here's a game we haven't been following:

Tampa Bay 8, Toronto 5 -- as the Blue Jays season ends just a little bit down the street from me.

    ReplyDelete
  139. TB 8, TOR 5, FINAL.
    TB: 66-96

    Still 8-1.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Has Don or Jerry ever mentioned Don is doing some TBS games?

    Or are they not allowed?

    ReplyDelete
  143. Dear Fenway Faithful:

Let's please refrain from the Wave in the playoffs.

21 consecutive outs recorded by the Red Sox.

    ReplyDelete
  144. They mentioned it a week ago or so, RS. Jerry brought it up. He actually said, "I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say this, but..." and announced it.

    ReplyDelete
  145. RE: TBS games, I think they did mention it when it was first announced but other than that I haven't heard a thing.

    ReplyDelete

It couldn't happen to a nicer guy, (MFY).

  152. Clayton's 3 pitch K isn't so strange.

  153. I feel bad for Pedro.

Anytime bad things happen to the Mets, MFY fans are very happy, so it sucks.

  154. Middle of the 9th at Shea.

    Last licks.

Pitcher's spot, then Reyes, and Castillo due up.

Carlos Delgado suffered a fractured left hand when being hit by a pitch in the 1st inning.

    Injury to insult.

  155. Cmon Rockies. I want at least ONE one game playoff

  156. Just as RS posted the pitching stats , I was getting ready to comment that since that ugly 1st inning, the pitching has been perfect. 21 straight outs! (OK, 22 counting the last of the 1st)

  157. Marlon Anderson for the Mets batting.

  158. Last time I rooted for the Mets 1969!

Well, there was that subway series in 2000 but it was more of a grit my teeth type of thing.

For the fans, I feel bad, to lose all those games at home with Pedro and Glavine pitching. Two HOF'ers and they couldn't get it done. UGHly

  159. Jose Reyes goes down 4-3.

Boos rain down on Shea Stadium and Jose Reyes, as the Mets are down to their final out.

  165. The Mets season is now over.

    As Uncle Joe says:

    Can you believe it?

    ReplyDelete
  166. So
    Phillies hosting Padres/Rockies
    DBacks hosting Cubs

    Red Sox hosting Angels
    Indians hosting Yankees

On Wednesday, we're being scheduled around the two NL games and on Friday we're being scheduled around the Yankee game.

Methinks the timing will work like this:

    Wednesday
1: Phillies vs. NL Wild Card
    5:30: Diamondbacks vs. Cubs
    8:30 Red Sox vs. Angels

    Friday
    5:30: Red Sox vs. Angels
    8:30: Indians vs. Yankees

I hope I'm wrong - I want the primetime game on Friday because I have a commitment Friday from 6-9 :/

  167. Moss
