WS 3: Red Sox 10, Rockies 5

Red Sox - 006 000 031 - 10 15 1
Rockies - 000 002 300 - 5 11 0

Red Sox lead series 3-0
For the first time in World Series history, two rookies had at least three hits each in a World Series game. Ellsbury went 4-for-5, with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, while Pedroia was 3-for-5, with one double and 2 RBI.

Lowell singled twice and drive in two runs, Lugo doubled and walked twice, and Matsuzaka knocked in two runs with a single in the six-run third.

Colorado closed the Red Sox's lead to 6-5 in the seventh when Holliday blasted a three-run home run to dead center of Hideki Okajima's first pitch. Jeemer then allowed a single, but got three straight outs to end the threat. Boston answered with three of their own in the top of the eighth -- with one out, Lugo walked, Coco Crisp singled, Ellsbury doubled in one run, and Pedroia doubled in two more.

Jon Lester takes the hill tomorrow night as Boston goes for its second straight World Series sweep. ... (Did I just type that?!!?)

  3. I want to make sure everyone saw Gordon Edes's story that examined the thought and planning behind the pickoff move. Absolutely great work from Edes -- he notes that it was "a stunning example of how inside knowledge and paying extraordinary attention to detail can turn a Series".

It also helps to have Francona managing like a freaking genius. Just amazing, brilliant work from Tito.

Tito gave all the credit to Mills on that play....

  5. phreline,
i understand why you find this annoying, as CHB is as condescending as they come, but he has a point.
i wonder how many people at those world series games, or who even have season tix can name who played CF for us before Johnny Damon.

    ReplyDelete
  6. great article, redsock, thanks for linking that.

  7. i'm listening to WFAN right now, and they're all talking about the a-rod deal, and if he'll opt out etc.

makes me think, boy am i happy he didnt come to boston.
simply put, i like manny better.
    duh.

  8. Random FF (Fun Fact):

The Rockies have half the balks that they have runs in this series. :P

  9. To phrenile,

That article, though from Shaughnessy, makes a good point. I really want to punch the next person who begs for the Series at Fenway again, right in the sternum. Francona is probably thinking, "Fuck that shit. We're winning wherever we can fucking win, be it NYC, Denver, Anaheim, Cleveland, etc."

Nouveau Sox fans, get this through your head. The Red Sox does not revolve around you. I've been born and raised a Sox fan since 1984, growing up idolizing Clemens, and we could win the Series in some shit-kicker ballpark instead of Fenway, and I'd be elated. It should never matter where we win, just as long as we win.

Three long years? Fuck you. Tell that to the WW2/Korea vets who are still alive and I bet cried when the Fens brought home the trophy. Tell that to the baby boomers who waited decades for a victory. The Sox become hot this year and now you want them to cater to you? Sox fans don't do that. Sox fans take their team's wins wherever.

Shaughnessy is right this time. Shut up newbie fans. Don't say shit like that because it could come back to haunt you. I want the Sox to take it to the Rockies in Denver, and take it to whoever else they face next year on the road, because that's what they do. We can come crashing down on a team like the Vikings of old and leave our mark. The Sox don't need to bring the teams to them.

I was thinking more of his post-season work in general. It's been masterful. Yanking Curt and going right to Jeemer was exactly the right move -- and it was a move he would NEVER make in any regular season game.

I'm rethinking a lot of my past comments about Yerry.

Someone at the rally today - a lifelong fan, now in her 60s - said to me, Don't you want it to stretch out a bit, so we can enjoy it more, and bring it back to Fenway?

I said no. We laughed about it.

She's not a bandwagoner, and she doesn't need to be punched. (In the sternum?) It's just a different pov.

Either way, whatever we want, it doesn't affect one happens in the game one iota.

People here got on me for wanting them to win the division and feeling the wild card wasn't good enough. Other people agreed with me. Either way, it couldn't affect what happened on the field.

So what there are bandwagon fans? That only means we have a good team. It shouldn't detract from anyone's enjoyment.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I love Francona. He is a brilliant manager.

Many times this season, I thought fans' criticisms of Tito were very ignorant. Not that we should follow him blindly and never disagree. But I figure the man has a lot more information than I do, and until I get the whole picture, I'm not going to assume he's an idiot, as many did.

Then again, many fans thought our team sucked this season. Talk about ignorant!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. as ive stated before, tito is probably my favorite thing about the team. call me crazy, but im serious.

    ReplyDelete
  14. they should have francona red sox t-shirts.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good point L. Perhaps I was too harsh. That woman doesn't deserve a punch. Living in the Bean does expose me to a lot of nouveau fans who seriously request the Sox lose 2. Me I'm so nervous I'd rather nip anything in the bud lest it rear its ugly head, so I'd prefer not to have someone say something like that lest reverse mojo/jinx/bad shit happens.

You know as well as I do how many bandwagon Sox fans operate. Cheer if we're on fire, ignore if we have a crappy year. I mean yes there are regular fans who get upset when we're sucking, but that's normal. A bandwagoner in my opinion would abandon the Sox if they happened to suck down the road (highly unlikely). I can predict a good amount of those.

I mean I know it'd be nice, but rather than risk a Rockies comeback, I'd rather keep 'em down and out for the next two.

    ReplyDelete
  16. About the bandwagoners: I understand the feeling, but the anger seems a bit displaced. I mean, being so angry at someone for being a fairweather fan of the same team you're a fan of?
I don't get it. Everyone is entitled to be a Sox fan, and you can be a good one or a bad one. And for the record, I'm a fan since the postseason of 2003, though I guess it's in different circumstances than others (I'd just never been exposed to baseball before, living in Israel).

And I have no idea who played CF before Damon. Wait, I'll check it out: it was the gay dinosaurs dude. No big loss.

    ReplyDelete
  17. With fandom, it's not always about how much you know about them, but where you stand when certain circumstances fall upon the team. I know little of the 1970s/80s Red Sox, but I make an attempt to learn.

I have friends who've never really been into baseball until I showed them (yes I can be a prophet sometimes ladies and gents :D) or they picked it up in the Bean and at Boston U. They became legitimately interested and started cheering, even in the bad times like Boston Massacre '06 (hope this doesn't bring any 'Nam-like flashback pains to anyone). The Bostonians welcomed them into the Nation with open arms. I think many people categorize bandwagoners as people who never paid attention to the Sox or baseball, but all of a sudden profess to be fanatics of the Fens. That's bullshit and everyone in the room knows it is. That's the type of person who must straighten up and fly right.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gay dinosaurs dude! Ha, good memory there.

I'm with Ofer. I don't know what the big deal is about bandwagon fans. I like them a whole lot better than the supposed diehards who throw in the towel when the team is down a few runs, or after they hit a bad losing streak.

And in my very not-humble opinion, there is no such thing as mojo or jinx or any of that BULLSHIT. We all like our little rituals, they make us happy. But you're telling me some dude in Boston wishing for the Series to come back to Fenway is putting some kind of hex on the team?? Yeesh.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No big loss.

    Not so.

    He:

    (a) coined the phrase "curly-haired boyfriend"; and

    (b) broke up Mike Mussina's perfect game at Fenway Park when Mussina was only one strike away.

    ReplyDelete
  20. they should have francona red sox t-shirts.

    I'd wear one!

I never remember what number Tito wears, since you rarely see it. He's usually in the long sweatshirt.

    ReplyDelete
  21. We all like our little rituals, they make us happy.

Which reminds me to put on the same t-shirt and pajama bottoms I have worn during the last five Red Sox games -- all wins, if you haven't fuckin' noticed!

Also to get the shot glasses ready for the nip o'Jack: Sox are also 5-0 since we started doing that.

    Yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  22. coined the phrase "curly-haired boyfriend"

Oh yeah! It's so cool that we know exactly who said it first. Lots of times you don't know where a nickname started.

Man do I remember that near-perfecto. I was on the other side then.

    ReplyDelete
  23. No I don't think that's the case with a fan's request being the doom of us all. I'd rather play it safe though, which is what I usually say to fellow fans. Many people do follow that jinx/mojo stuff. I mean, trying to debunk the Millar mojo is a serious endeavor. That man literally has it coursing through his veins and yes I may be very silly for believing such a thing. Makes me proud to be a Sox fan though :P

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's so cool that we know exactly who said it first. Lots of times you don't know where a nickname started.

I am pretty sure that somewhere on a CD or my external hard drive I have the actual recording of it from some reporter's little tape machine!

    ReplyDelete
  25. People here got on me for wanting them to win the division and feeling the wild card wasn't good enough.

True there were people who got on us for wanting the division. I thought a statement needed to be made. That this team didn't worry about '78 (remdawg, Rice and Eckeresly brought it up all the time after the all start break). I looked at it as one more chain of the past that this team could break. I also thought HOME FIELD advantage was important. The Cleveland series showed that it was!

If you go back and look at some of the early threads in late April and May, I am sure that you will see that there were some of us, if not most of us who thought this was a special team. That still holds true. Most importantly, it has been a professional team. Never really high, and never really low. That approach helps at this time, one pitch at a time.

As for Yerry, what can you say, he is the one steering the ship. During the year he has made some questionable calls but I don't think we called for his head. We may have disagreed but that is part of the fun of rooting for a team. Every one is a back seat manager because it is easy to be one.

Having said all that I do want to say this:

&emsp Thanks for all the fun this year, not only has the team made this a special year, sharing it with Joy Nation has maed it that much more!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi all, I am off to watch the game with friends in DC. Hope you all enjoy the game and that the Sox win. Yes, I will be happy whenever and wherever they win.

FWIW, I have been a Sox fan since 1975, and I cannot remember who played CF before Damon either. It's not a test of my fandom, it's a test of my memory. For whatever reason, I best remember the team from 75 because they were my first loves and the team from 04, of course. Otherwise, I just always have loved the Red Sox, as players come and players go. Not a bandwagon fan for sure as I have stood by them for over 30 years. Just not someone with a good memory for details.

Anyway, I'll miss you all tonight, but I hope to be home tomorrow night for Game 4. Our flight from DC leaves at 6:15, and with any luck, I should be home by 8:30 or so.

    GO SOXXXX!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Colin, are you a religious person? Go to church and stuff?

Maybe that's why I can't get into any of that stuff. I'm a total atheist, and all that mojo/jinx stuff seems like praying to me.

    But hey, whatever works!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Have fun Amy! See you tomorrow when we complete the sweep. :)

    Bad mojo?? Too bad!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. There are two possibilities:

    1. Have a shitty team that only the diehards and obsessives follow.

    or

    2. Have a good team that usually makes the playoffs and might win a championship or two per decade, but put up with ignorant people who act like serious fans.

I know which one I prefer.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Allan, well said!

When you win, people jump on the gravy train. I say:

    All Aboard!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well I am a Catholic but haven't been to church in a while except for my neice/god-daughter's baptism.

When it comes to sports though, I almost unconsciously get very superstitious. It's part of the reason why I think the Sox got on a roll since the Millar video on Fox. I wore this t-shirt that says Red Sox in Irish Gaelic (literally "stockings of red") for the past two WS games and so far great success. Will I wear it again? We'll see how the game goes.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Never really high, and never really low. That approach helps at this time, one pitch at a time.

But that is not the usual behaviour of a fan. The word is short for fanatic, after all.

Posters here and media members out there were saying/writing that if Boston lost the ALCS to Cleveland (a distinct possibility seeing as both teams won 96 games and the Spiders held a 3-1 lead at one point), that it would be on Tito and, more importantly, Theo. Persumably, they felt those guys would lose their jobs.

A bigger load of shit would be hard to find.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks, L. It won't be the same without my JOS buds, but at least these friends are also crazy fans and will keep the beer and food flowing. Harvey, always the good sport, is happily cheering along the Sox, maybe so we don't kill him, but also because he wants me to be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Might I point out that Millar's mojo was completely absent in 2005? He sucked that season and he sucked HARD.

We didn't call him Oreck because his father's name was Kcero.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Amy, that sounds like a great time! Enjoy. Yay Harvey, good for him.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I also was really disturbed when people said that Francona would pay if the Sox lost. I mean, who do they think we are, Steinbrenner? Any manager that can get a team to the post season deserves credit---that's the real test of leading a team. Winning the WS may be further proof, but so much after the season depends on good fortune as well that blaming the manager seems assinine.

OK, that's my last thought for now. See you all tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's part of the reason why I think the Sox got on a roll since the Millar video on Fox.

Yeah, that's what did it. Not Bot and Jeemer and Peewee and Yook and Being and Tito.

    Millar.

Oh well. I just don't get it. But then, I don't have to.

    ReplyDelete
  38. that it would be on Tito and, more importantly, Theo. Persumably, they felt those guys would lose their jobs.

Yes a lot of writers did say that. As for here, I don't really recall any of us calling for their heads, except that if they did lose the division and then lost in the playoffs first round because they were the Wild Card team that it was possible that heads would roll. They took a gamble, a small gamble because they had a big lead and it has paid off so far. They won the division and they are 2-0 in the World Series.

No matter what, even if they blew this lead (and they aren't). No heads will roll at yawkey way. Nor should they.

As for the being superstitious, everybody is slightly superstitious. I prefer to look at it as trying to channel my positive vibes through the amosphere to the team!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. A bigger load of shit would be hard to find.

    Remember Rudy?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ok you're taking what I said out of context. Of course the Sox talent was the main reason for the win. I just like thinking it helped for motivational/Sox veteran mojo.

    ReplyDelete
  41. s1c, someone did say it here. Not a regular commenter, but someone came by to say that if the Sox lost to the Spiders, Tito and Theo should be fired.

Definitely not a regular citizen of Joy Nation, though. I can't imagine any of us thinking that.

And PS: not everyone is superstitious. I am not, at all, under any circumstances. I can't help it, it's just how I am.

    ReplyDelete
  42. He:

    (a) coined the phrase "curly-haired boyfriend"; and

    (b) broke up Mike Mussina's perfect game at Fenway Park when Mussina was only one strike away.

That's funny, I actually know both those things. I just didn't know he was a CF. I only got to see him as a 4th OF/DH type.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Colin, I didn't mean to take what you said out of context. I was just being silly, too.

I just don't get into that stuff. But like I said, whatever works.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Rodriguez is expected to win the AL Hank Aaron award given to each league's best hitter as determined by radio and T.V. broadcasters. The award ceremony will be before Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday. A-Rod will not be on hand to accept it, however.

"He has a family matter," Boras said.

From espn - Yeah right, he has a family matter, he's afraid that Tek might look at him menacingly.

and yes its ok for everyone and theyre mother to become sox fans, everyone entitled.
i just agree with some of the points that CHB made. no biggie.
    carl everett. what an ass.

    ReplyDelete
  47. She says as she readys for the shot!! (j/k)

    I knew you'd say that!

Trust me, I don't think it has any effect on the game whatsoever. Allan likes the tradition, and I don't say no to alcohol nearly as often as I should.

Nix, I didn't even read the CHB story. I just took off from what Colin said. It's sounds like a good read, tho, I'll check it out tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Speaking of Carl - Remember the game he blew up at the umpire vs the Mets. My brother in law was at that game and said it was even worse then it appeared on TV. I do not miss him.

    ReplyDelete
  49. carl everett wasnt my point, but im sure you guys know that.

Oh, yeah, of course it wasn't. I just looked it up out of curiosity, and he's a... let's say, colourful character, so I commented on it.

Maybe that's why I can't get into any of that stuff. I'm a total atheist, and all that mojo/jinx stuff seems like praying to me.

Hey, L-girl,I have a religious view to pitch to you. Ever heard of 'teapot agnostics'? It's basically saying that you can't say for sure that there isn't a god, but you can't say for sure that there isn't a teapot orbiting the sun, either. A similar sect is the 'tooth-fairy agnostics'. And, the fun thing is that you can change it to whatever improbable thing you can think of.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Coors Field advantage?
Please. Sox bats will dispel Rox/Fogg
    Then darkness follows.

    ReplyDelete
  51. HA. Yes the Red Sox can become the harbingers of eternal night if they so please.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Everyone knows the potential of the 2008 Red Sox as well. That alone would ensure Theo/Terry keeping their jobs if this ended badly. Never doubted their jobs, nor would I call for their heads either. Sometimes calls are made that we don't know fully about, so it doesn't make as much sense to us. More times than not, this year really showed us, those moves paid off. Okajima being shut down, Schilling being shut down, leaving guys in, taking guys out, etc etc etc.

I have a few friends who are bandwagoners, and the moment the Red Sox got into the playoffs, and furthermore, when they reached the World Series, they all of a sudden became a fan. And during the season, they'd also announce themselves a fan of the Red Sox... a big fan. So I'd try to talk to them a bit about the team and they'd have no idea what I'm talking about. Did you watch the game last night? Uh, no... You wanna watch the game tonight? Well, not really. Grey's Anatomy is on tonight. When was the last game you watched a game? Um... I don't remember. I think the last Red Sox/Yankees game.

They're the first ones to go buy a Jacoby Ellsbury shirt, though.

    [/rant]

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh, and Nixon, like Laura, I was responding to Colin, and not to you. I agree with what you said.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ofer, I haven't heard of that, but I like it!

I never try to tell anyone there isn't a god. How would I know? If only all the religious folks would take the same approach!

I have been thinking of becoming a Pastafarian, though. I could get behind a high-carb religion.

And I promise that is my last religion comment of the night.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wow, Rice and Remy said something I totally agree with, "Less nibbling more power" (what they want to see from Daisuke!!

Also, heard on the way to work last night, Mile high city, will we see Mile High Manny being Manny?

    MHMBM!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I remember Darren Lewis as a CF before Damon, but was there an everyday CF in between Lewis and Damon?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Not that I want to get into it, but Everett was justified in blowing his top (btw, the video showed he never headbutted the umpire, despite what the media insisted). He was well within the rules with his stance -- it wasn't even close. I have no idea how the Mets got the umpire to say something. Maybe the ump was dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  58. And during the season, they'd also announce themselves a fan of the Red Sox... a big fan. So I'd try to talk to them a bit about the team and they'd have no idea what I'm talking about. I think the last Red Sox/Yankees game.

Ish, I relate. I was once waiting out for playoff tix (you can guess where this was) and heard people behind me saying "I never did get to a game this season...". I felt like they had no right to get playoff tix at all.

Not rational, but that's how I felt.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh yeah. Carl Everett. For some reason I remembered him playing RF or LF. But that doesn't make much sense considering the two notable LF and RF players.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Love Gordon Edes talking about pregame scouting, brings up the 88 dodger game when Eck threw the back door slider to Gibby! Millsie showed him the color coded card showing Holliday going with two outs!!

That was a great game in 88.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Everett started 83 games in CF in 2001, Nixon 67 and Lewis 11.

In 2000 it was Everett with 122 starts and Lewis with 31.

Ugh. Darren Lewis. Man, the fits I would throw when he was allowed to leadoff.

    ReplyDelete
  62. "I never did get to a game this season...". I felt like they had no right to get playoff tix at all.

I still haven't been to a game at Fenway yet, which is unfortunate, but it was more of a financial issue than anything else. High ticket prices. But I never missed a game this season, whether it was on TV or radio. Looking at the people at Fenway, they really don't seem to know what to do because a lot of them didn't really follow the Red Sox all season. They just happened to have the connection with the tickets, or the hundreds or thousands of dollars to spend on the tickets. Not that they are all like that, though. I get annoyed when people say "If you were lucky enough to get tickets to the game."

    Ah well.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ugh. Darren Lewis. Man, the fits I would throw when he was allowed to leadoff.

I remember that. He looked much better batting in the eighth spot.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ish, this was in the Bronx, and the people talking worked at the Bronx Courthouse! That is right next door to Yankee Stadium.

Of course living in Maine it is not easy to get to Fenway. These folks had no obstacles except their own lack of interest.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Man I love Catherine Tappen - but every time I see her I keep on hearing her sign off when she does the sports flash on WEEI - "consider yourself flashed".

Fogg - my only worry about Fogg is that he is one of those junk baller types that generally cause problems for the Sox. Still the way this team is locked in, he should be no problem.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Of course living in Maine it is not easy to get to Fenway. These folks had no obstacles except their own lack of interest.

Yeah, it's kind of funny, though annoying, how far it seems like Boston is. I could spit into New Hampshire and it's a 60 mile trip into the city, but with parking and the tolls ($4.50 in tolls inbound, $6.00 total), it's not difficult to get down there, but it's not especially easy, either.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Man if the MFY's really have Girardi or Mattingly as their manager next year the "bronx zoo" will be back in business.

  68. yeah one of my friends is a "bandwagner" from FLA

sometimes it kinda pisses me off, even though he's my friend.

when we lost 7-3 in cleveland he said "at least we got to see HISTORY with the back-to-back-to-back"

while i was thinking i could give a fuck if that was postseason history, i wanted a win.

maybe im a bit of a psycho though.

  69. Man I love Catherine Tappen - but every time I see her I keep on hearing her sign off when she does the sports flash on WEEI - "consider yourself flashed".

Not sure how I've managed not to hear her doing a sports flash. She's left WEEI completely now, right? Just on NESN? By the way, did she mention anything about Patrice Bergeron? The Bruin who took a hard hit from being into the boards during the hockey game today. He went down like a sack of potatoes and was unconscious for quite some time. Real scary.

    ReplyDelete
  70. nix33, yeah, but the good kind of psycho

    ReplyDelete
  71. NY rags say Cashman and Hank agree on who the manager should be, but they are keeping quiet. Various things point to Girardi.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Catherine does fill ins for the flash when people are on vacation etc.

Bergeron - Broken nose, otherwise seems to be al right. (I didn't want to get lectured by L-girl on this being a HOCKEY free zone lol).

    ReplyDelete
  73. My thoughts exactly Nix on the psycho bit.

    ReplyDelete
  74. the honeymoon for the new guy in the bronx will be remarkably short.

let's hope the chokers get off to a similar start in 08!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Just wait til I lecture you on what a lecture is. :)

Anyway, here I am in Canada, I can't very well ask people to be hockey-free!

  76. Bergeron - Broken nose, otherwise seems to be al right. (I didn't want to get lectured by L-girl on this being a HOCKEY free zone lol).

No worries, I'll take care of L for you if she gives you any grief. I asked the question.

  77. i have to tell you a couple of things i am very apprciative this postseason from the media

from edes, its that article he wrote concerning the pickoff.

the other? i cant believe im going to say this but fox's mic on the pitching coach of col. i REALLY liked hearing what the coach had to say to the youngster on the mound in a pressure situation. i am curious about different approaches. i'd love to hear ferrell, but the sox wouldnt allow that bollocks.

    ReplyDelete
  78. No Tim tonight? How will we know what he had for dinner??

    ReplyDelete
  79. some of the in-game mic'd stuff has been really good.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hey for 129.95 you can get a Walk off into the night MBM bat!

Ryan, DH is here to stay in the AL and I don't understand why its not in the NL!

    21 of 22 could represent their 1967!

    ReplyDelete
  81. s1c, i guess you are watching pregame and posting on it? since we don't have that, your comments are very mysterious and amusing.

    ReplyDelete
  82. edes also did some great work after the arod trade talks broken down in 2003. it showed what good journalism can be -- and so often is not (judging by how surprised we are when we see it) -- in boston.

i remarked about the pitching coach in the thread when it happened. i was *really* surprised that the teams allowed that.

    okay -- shot time.

    ReplyDelete
  83. i REALLY liked hearing what the coach had to say to the youngster on the mound in a pressure situation.

Me too. The guys on WEEI's Big Show (including Tom Caron) were baffled that they'd actually have the pitching coached mic'd up during his conference on the mound. They were almost annoyed by it. But then again, the Big Show hosts on EEI are probably the most annoying as anyone else on that station.

    ReplyDelete
  84. re: Everett. was he yelling at Edes when he said "and take yr curly haired boyfriend with you"???

    ReplyDelete
  85. L-girl - yep and yep!!

Best line I heard yesterday was Tom Caron - "Have to remember that the Rockies had played all of their games on TBS before the WS. Holliday got picked off because he couldn't see that 9 ft graphic".

TC - even with the humidor pitchers don't want to go there. No kidding!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I don't understand why its not in the NL!

Because the NL is the only league in professionbal baseball that respects tradition?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Oh -- And Everett knew Edes when he was with the Marlins and Gordon worked for a paper in Florida (before he went to the Globe).

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ish- you don't like the Big Show!! Come on, that is what true sports radio is all about! A bunch of short overweight loud mouths acting like they know everything!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Wait was it Tim who always made the steamed spinach or was it Amy or someone else? I'm being really amnesic today.

    ReplyDelete
  90. i often wondewr those stupid baseball things:
what opposing players say to eachother at 1st base.
how much shit catchers ACTUALLY talk to hitters.
what a pitching coach focuses on when a guy is struggling on the mound.
    that kind of random bullshit.

also theres always, "i cannot believe after years and years of watching baseball, that hitters can pick up a pitch in a fraction of a second."
    still bewilders me...

    ReplyDelete
  91. Oh god - NESN moment of the game was LBJ stealing second and feeding a hungry nation. Good gawd, taco bell got to NESN also.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have mixed emotions about the non-DH in the NL, but what I really don't like is the difference between the AL and the NL, though they do try to make it as equal as it can be with the current rules in each league.

Will we ever see the NL adopt the DH? I wonder if there would be more interleague play if they did that. Schedule it more like they would with football, I guess. I don't know how the conferences are divided up and scheduled, though. That would be interesting, though.

I just think that people feel there needs to be some obvious difference between the two leagues, to be able to separate them, etc. But hey. I don't think it'll happen anytime soon, if ever, though. It may take another strike to get to happen, maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Feeding a hungry nation, that is offensive. Yuck.

    ReplyDelete
  94. i remarked about the pitching coach in the thread when it happened. i was *really* surprised that the teams allowed that.

Oh, yeah, I remember seeing that, but the sound was turned down over at the Spiders' Den (they have pretty good music there, though, so I'm for it). I was really curious as to what the pitching coach was saying, and I remember I made a mental note to ask around here (I was pretty sure you'd remember what he said, Allan). I was also very surprised the Rockies allowed that.

Alas, I came home pretty buzzed on beer and single malt, fell on the bed, and didn't recover until the next day.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I just think that people feel there needs to be some obvious difference between the two leagues, to be able to separate them, etc.

Ish, this doesn't make much sense, considering the two leagues played with the same rules from the beginning of baseball until 1973.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Ish- you don't like the Big Show!! Come on, that is what true sports radio is all about! A bunch of short overweight loud mouths acting like they know everything!

Never said I don't like it... heh. What makes them annoying is also what makes them appealing, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  97. There's Tim's music... doo doo doo doooooo....

    ReplyDelete
  98. I know that owners were considering having a special hitter that could bat instead of the pitcher way back in the 1910s.

I'd like to know how early the talk of a DH for the pitcher goes back to -- and how much of an issue it was between 1920 and 1973?

    Someone should research that.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I'm on steamed spinach duty tonight! Making it as we speak.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I wonder how many Sox fans are there tonight -- and how loud they will be?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Yeah, Ofer's on the spinach detail!! Alright.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Ish, this doesn't make much sense, considering the two leagues played with the same rules from the beginning of baseball until 1973.

That is true. Then what exactly is it that is stopping the NL from adopting the DH? Don't the NL teams want it? Or would they rather keep things the way they are?

    ReplyDelete
  103. wow girardi and tek have the same barber.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Mark Grace, he's on my girls' team. (Psst Mark, you should shave!)

    ReplyDelete
  105. chris myers should be selling cars.
    what a smudge.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Hey Kevin Kennedy -- any thoughts on why no team has considered you for manager after you were fired 12 years ago? Hmmm?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Only reason Joe Girardi is there is because Eric Byrnes uh, um... couldn't make it. Well, it was better off he didn't show up at Coors Field. Not after he announced during the NLCS that the Diamondbacks were not being outplayed.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Then what exactly is it that is stopping the NL from adopting the DH? Don't the NL teams want it? Or would they rather keep things the way they are?

I don't know. But the AL will certainly never give it up. College ball, minor leagues, independent leagues, Caribbean ball - all use the DH. And the union would never allow it either. So if we're ever going to get one set of rules, the NL will have to budge.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I've got an idea chris why don't you stay in there and let us find out!

This weeks interview with Schilling, Dennis and Callahan asked what is the big difference at Coors.

Besides the normal, Schilling said you get sorer and takes longer to recover.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Evening all. I don't know how long I am going to last.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Girardi's a pretty good commentator, I think - one of the better ones. Byrnes is an idiot. (Of course.)

    ReplyDelete
  112. DH was introduced to create more offense. Not sure what the NL's exact reason was at the time.

No need for an increase in offense now. Get rid of it (after Ortiz retires!).

    ReplyDelete
  113. girardi has a regular spot in the michael kay show... hes good at avoiding michael kays spins.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Try to make a story,
Fox pimping Rox for Game 3.
    No use. It is over.

    ReplyDelete
  115. So if we're ever going to get one set of rules, the NL will have to budge.

So true, so true! Ryans argument is that there are no seperate league offices any more, the umpires are under one umbrella, so why keep pretending that there are two leagues. It is really two conferences (like in football) so have everybody play by the same rules.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Oh yeah. There's definitely no chance the AL would give up the DH. We touched on this earlier in the season about pitchers in the NL having to bat. The only time the pitchers bat in the minor leagues is when both teams are NL affiliates. Pitchers are generally at a disadvantage hitting, asides from only hitting once every five days, but also because they stopped hitting when they got to college and into the minor leagues. Then they all of a sudden have to hit again.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Big weekend, what with the DOlphins v Giants game tomorrow (i'm one of the lucky ones to get tickets)

    ReplyDelete
  118. girardi has a regular spot in the michael kay show... hes good at avoiding michael kays spins.

that's cool. he seems to have a brain, and is an independent thinker.

    ReplyDelete
  119. plus girardi thinks boston is going to win, so he is very smart!!!

    ReplyDelete

Actually that isn't a dumb question because the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants are squaring off in London.

  138. Amalie Benjamin: "David Ortiz hit the Office Liquidators.com sign out in right field in batting practice today. That sign, which is on the facing of the third deck in Coors Field, is a long, long, long way from home plate. It's two tiers above a 375-foot sign."

She also notes that the fans here are not as coordinated at waving the towels as the dolts in Cleveland.

    (She did not say dolts.)

    ReplyDelete

  148. i saw buck on conan before the world series started and conan said he would give $$ to any charity buck named if buck said "jubb jubb" on the air.

the thing is what i saw was a repeat AFTER game one. i remember watching game one and heard him say, "and that was no jubb jubb double" or something to that effect. (i thought jubb jubb meant ceap i.e. no cheap double or whatever)
i remember being confused during the game. "what the fuck is jubb jubb?"

    did anyone else hear that?

last year he wore a really ugly tie conan dared him to.

  150. Wow, pastafarianism. I love this blog. I need to buy the "Global Temperature vs. Number of Pirates" coffee mug.

I was lurking at a Rockies blog after game 2 and ran across this interchange:

Comment 2: "...good road victory for the Israelites as I recall"
