About being the best team in the universe -- something interesting was said over at RL. They said the Twins might rather the Sox have Santana so that we would be a clear favorite to win the division, lessening the competition for the Wild Card spot from the Twins' perspective.

If the Yankees get one ace (Haren, etc.), then I think they have a shot at the division, but better start thinking a bit more about the wild card. So far, it just looks to me like they got older and more expensive.
Five years down the line, anything is possible, of course. But so much can happen (or not happen) in that time period to any player...
I would be stoked if the deal got done on the terms they're talking. Totally stoked. But I'm kinda expecting the Yankees to cave.

I'm not saying I want to be them. I'm just saying I never feel like we're an easy favorite in this division.
And we ain't got Santana yet. Although in the Santana thread at SoSH, it was mentioned that the lack of leaks since last night might indicate that talks are serious -- i.e., locked down as Theo's known to do (along with most GMs).
Which is why I wrote "But I'm kinda expecting the Yankees to cave" meaning offer Kennedy or whatnot to get Santana. I don't call this a done deal yet by any stretch.

Still conflicted over Ellsbury though, but at least he has a WS ring if he does indeed go so there's no regrets whatsoever. And besides, it may suck but we can't keep all the fan favorites, except Doc who won everyone's heart again with the re-sign.

ReplyDeleteBradford was just on WEEI - The fifth player is a very high prospect, the whispering is that the Yankees will make a push to up the ante, because they need Santana more than the Sox do, but look for the deal to be completed tonight and his feeling is that the Twins will take the Lester, Coco, Lowrie, Masterson plus the high schooler. Or at least that is the way I understood it.

Assuming is Ococ, the Sox subbed Kalish for Lowrie. Not sure how this helps the Twins, who could start Lowrie on opening day. Kalish is promising, but in A ball.

Looking around here in southern Maine/southern NH, it's hard to believe there's about six inches of fresh snow on the ground and there are christmas lights all over the place, because it feels like we're in the thick of it, just, without the games.
The whole wildcard in this thing is if the Red Sox will offer Johann 5 years 100 mill or more...

ReplyDeleteI think, when you wake up tomorrow morning, there will be some news. Perhaps. But yeah, this is tiresome. Interesting at first, but now it's getting old. Make the deal, or kill the deal and move on.
I've been enjoying watching the Celtics and Bruins and Patriots. They're all playing well and the games are exciting and, most importantly, interesting. But no amount of football, hockey, and basketball can fill the void that a lack of baseball creates.

ReplyDeleteI've not seen any discussion of the unintended consequence of a Santana deal. Our new ace is a guy signed for $10M or $11M /yr. He was Dominant for pretty much the entire year and definitely in the postseason. Guy's got a big ego. I'm curious to see what impact it'll have on him if we bring in Santana.

ReplyDeleteI find football interesting when the games are relatively close, like this week's Patriots/Ravens game. I find basketball incredibly boring; two hours of running back and forth throwing balls into a hoop, and then a few minutes of excitement in the last few minutes to see who gets the last basket---or alternatively, a blowout that is boring the entire time. I can't even imagine watching hockey. All that skating around for two hours with almost no scoring?
Now, give me baseball---always the drama of a pitcher against a batter, always unpredictable, not confined by time, and slow enough that I can see every play if I want to. Gotta love it! I just don't get people who say baseball is boring. But then they same about me and my feelings about the other sports.

ReplyDeleteI woke up in the middle of the night and checked and rotoworld.com reported that talks had ended for the night. Seemed to me like there hadn't been any talks.
It's all becoming increasingly uninteresting as each hour passes without a deal. The entire league is being stuck in limbo, and it's creating an annoying bottleneck.
Assuming the Sox and Twins reached a deal last night, there'd still be a 24-hour window to negotiate an extension with Santana himself. So we probably wouldn't hear anything until tomorrow in any event.
