SI: Red Sox Will Finish 2nd

Sports Illustrated's baseball issue is out, with Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury on the fold-out cover.

The magazine predicts the Yankees (94-68) will win the East ahead of the Red Sox (92-70), and that Boston will lose the ALDS to the eventual World Champion Tigers.

The issue also includes "Restocking a Rivalry", an article from Tom Verducci about the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry and the 2005 draft.

  1. Ever since SI picked Cleveland as the best team in baseball before the 1987 season (the Indians finished with the worst record of all the teams that year), I have ignored its baseball picks, which are usually and transoparently calculated to get attention by bucking conventional wisdom. If the Yankees even make the play-offs, it will only be because the Tigers don't.

  2. Dr. Z's pick: The Broncos!

Bartolo Colon is the newest root canal getter.

  3. The guy that wrote the article was on the Dan Patrick radio show today and he was a complete idiot.

  4. Tom Verducci was on Dan Patrick's show, and you think Verducci was the moron? Verducci can write. What can Dan Patrick do?

I know Dr. Z. Did you know he is a wine connoisseur? Also an obsessive-compulsive who cannot travel by plane, among other things.

  6. How do you know it's the same Dr. Z?

  7. It might be the end of the line for Trot Nixon. A couple of weeks ago he was slated to make the Diamondbacks' big league roster. Now the D-Backs intend to go with prospect Alex Romero as the fifth outfielder while starter Chad Tracy is injured.

  8. How do you know it's the same Dr. Z?

    Because I know him.

  9. I don't know what SI's problem is. Manny is leading the League in RBIs, 3 of the top 5 pitchers on the strikeout board are Red Sox and Lugo is batting freakin' .500.

  10. The Yankees. Finishing first.

    The Yankees.

    With WHAT pitching rotation?

  11. The Tigers aren't going anywhere.

I feel like the projections are based on hype.

Although, the Sox pretty much had the most hype last season thanks to Dice-K. We also had a deep team too, so we won on both fronts.

We're totally slacking in the style points this offseason. Standing pact is so out.

  13. Well, the Doctor Z I know also says he's the real Doctor Z.

You and I can certainly know the same person. It's not that big a planet.

The man who is Dr Z and I share a close mutual friend. Dr Z also writes about wine under his given name. I don't know if he wants his two bylines connected, although I imagine many people know.

  15. Oops, my bad, I didn't realize he was all the way out about it. Dr Z the football and wine writer.

  16. There is more than one Dr Z? Have I been talking about the wrong person all along??

I just think it's cool that a guy is an expert on football and on wine. Very stereotype-busting.

  17. Maybe Trot and Dougie can find a good place together.
