Back in high school there was an extended field trip to Quebec for kids taking French. The ones who went told me that they couldn't understand French Canadians at all.
They also told me they would go to the bars at night.

In most of Canada you can totally do without French. But if you're bilingual you would have a lot more job opportunities.
We would like to live in Montreal, but we couldn't get good jobs there without French.

The people in St. Johns didn't have a drastic accent. It's deep in the outport towns that you find the old coots who still recall that time they went to the next town over 20 years ago, and will tell you everything you want to know about the ocean, fish, and boats.
