G87: Rays 7, Red Sox 6

Red Sox - 101 020 011 - 6 10 2
Rays - 100 000 60x - 7 9 2
Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen each faced three batters in the seventh -- and retired no one. All six runners scored -- Terry Francona used four pitchers in the 11-batter inning -- and Tampa completed the three-game sweep.

Dice (5-2-1-5-5) had a horrible 1.2 innings, but then settled down nicely, retiring 10 of his last 11 batters. Going back to the end of the first inning, he retired 13 of his last 16 batters. He threw 101 pitches in five innings (24-25-17 14-21).

Dustin Pedroia homered in the first, tripled in the third and doubled in the fifth. He needed only a single for Boston's first cycle since John Valentin (June 6, 1996), but he flew out to center in the sixth and doubled in the eighth.

Boston dropped to 3.5 GB. They move on to New York, where the Yankees routed Texas tonight, 18-7.

    Welcome back!

    ReplyDelete
  9. What's our record without Allen and Laura?

    PEDE DONG!

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1st lead of the series for the sox

    ReplyDelete
  11. so nesn.com supposedly posts lineups daily at 3:03. don't know if you knew that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's so fascinating to watch the Matsuzaka saga unfold. What will Dice-K be bringing today?

    ReplyDelete
  13. why 3:03, I don't know. but it said it on the screen in pre-game. nesn discovering the things they can do with this new internet thing: chatting with TC, posting lineups, etc

    ReplyDelete
  14. 93MPH is just too many for Manny these days.

    ReplyDelete
  15. clubhouse probably opens then and they see it. and they need 3 minutes to phone it in?

it could change in the 4 hours until game time though. late scratches and all

    ReplyDelete
  16. What will Dice-K be bringing today?

    The noise.

    ReplyDelete
  17. O POO! say the Rays... (One Pitch, One Out) (at least I think it was the first pitch)

    ReplyDelete
  18. So what day did you leave, Redsock?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm surprised Jon Rich is commenting instead of Dale.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 6-7 in your absence. Don't be doing that again.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Dale's on vacation. Hasn't been on his regular talk show either

    ReplyDelete
  22. Damn you, Matsuzaka! Throw strikes!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've seen enough two out walks this series.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ponson: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R. A much better first 2 than Jobber last nite

    ReplyDelete
  25. come on, tek, work your "magic"

    ReplyDelete
  26. another BB comes around to score.

    another 2-out run.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 4 pitch BB. Okay, this is his "bad inning."

    ReplyDelete
  28. well that was a little scary

    ReplyDelete
  29. feels like we're already down 3-1, so it's nice to see the game tied 1-1.

    ReplyDelete
  30. that sounded and looked scary off the bat.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sounds like we are hitting the ball hard.

    RUNS PLEASE!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. wow, almost looked like Youk wasn't gonna stop there.

    Gotta single in two here....

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was rather surprised to compare Lugo's stats with LBJ's. This is including Ellsbury's slump, but as of yesterday, Lugo had a slightly better OBP. Ellsbury only really leads on power and SB.

    ReplyDelete
  34. pitch count rising

that is best said in a shatner voice: "pitch count ........ rising ......"

    ReplyDelete

  35. that is best said in a shatner voice: "pitch count ........ rising ......"

I actually did put a lot of space in between the words, but they disappeared when it posted.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would love a Dice-K with a 4.00 ERA that pitches 7 innings average.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Crawford's at bat music is soooo bad.

    ReplyDelete
  38. what was it? sounded like some shitty beastie boys.

    ReplyDelete
  39. is that to imply you don't like the Beastie Boys in general or that it sounded like one of their shittier tunes?

    ReplyDelete
  40. dicks on the harlem river.

    A-Rod w RISP: .239, RISP, 2 out: .200

    ReplyDelete
  41. mustachioed cheater, grand effing dong

    ReplyDelete
  42. Freakin' Giambi grand slam. Goddam.

    ReplyDelete
  43. another curtain call from the least knowledgeable fans in baseball.

    Dustin needs a 1B and a 2B for the C.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dustin, JD, and Mike,

Thank you for all your fine offensive efforts lately.

    Manny, Jacoby, Cap'n,

    Fellas, your team needs you.

    ReplyDelete
  45. also, to keep their 100-year streak in tact, that yankee rally was set up by a botched double play ball that would've ended the inning.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I am going to the Giants/Cubs game tonight. Kind of tired, so I doubt I'll make it through to the fireworks at the end of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is like a Sox/Yanks game, but with a very different feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  48. take THAT "botched double play ball that would've ended the inning"! bout time we caught a break in this series. I guess it was about time the yanks caught one in theirs...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Another lead?!?!?! We're in the lead?!?! AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Today I bought "Awesome!" brand paper towels. Don't tell Laura.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Will do, thanks.

I said at the start of the season that there should be a parade if the Giants were to go .500. Now I feel like they'd still deserve the parade -- but might win the division along with it if they were able to pull it off.

It's fun when your ace pitcher looks like the president of a high school chess club. I root for the Giants...nothing like for the Sox, of course, but I like to see them win.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The Giants or Dodgers winning is always good--gets those older Yankee fans mad.

    ReplyDelete
  53. OMG
DICE HAS RETIRED 3 IN A ROW!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Do not panic at the possibility of a 1-2-3 inning.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I can think of worse ideas than this, but it's very difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  56. rare trip to Mel's Diner for Dice

    ReplyDelete
  57. since floyd's bb and farrell's visit back in the first, dice has retired 7 of 9.

    and we lead 2-1!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yay, a game thread, and we are ahead of the Rays for the first time this series.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I wonder what Farrell said? Maybe something along the lines of, "Cut the shit"?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Welcome home, and I see we are back with moderating??

Life has just not been the same....

    ReplyDelete
  61. There's some post-vacation optimism.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Tek....so sad to watch his swing. SO pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Amy: L says hello!

She's been trying to get her laptop to connect for the last 2 hours. :<(

    ReplyDelete
  64. STOP THE PRESSES! Tek is on base!

    ReplyDelete
  65. nice to see tek remembers to go to first and not third.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hi, Laura. Ugh, I hate that connection stuff.

    A HIT!

You guys really have brought back the good luck from Newfoundland.

    How are the dogs, Allan?

    ReplyDelete
  67. L adds that she's surprised he didn't go back to the dugout. Force of habit after every AB!

    ReplyDelete
  68. So what did everyone do without game threads? I was so frustrated once Ish went on vacation.

    ANOTHER HIT!

    ReplyDelete
  69. LBJ is ready to preform for L. I can feel it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Puppies are great! Our sitter was fantastic!

Cody needs a brushing though -- she looks horrible, like a wild animal that is shedding in the summer -- there are big empty and furry off-color patches all over her!!!

    LOADED FOR LYNDON!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. let's get Georgie Peorgie to 90 pitches by the end of this inning

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hi everyone! Whew, only took me two friggin hours to connect. But I'm glad to be back.

    Oh shit, what just happened.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The run didn't score???? Crap.

OK, we still have the lead. Don't forget that folks, because we're back now! :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. I AM PISSED. AT LUGO. It's not gonna be a DP with Jacoby running, just slide right to the bag and don't fuck around!!!! Ass hole!!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. but doesnt the run still count if tek crossed the plate before the play, as the decision for the interference came after?

    ReplyDelete
  76. That sucks. Arggh.

Glad the dogs are doing well. I bet they were happy to see you guys!

    ReplyDelete
  77. It was a ticky tack, even BAD call, but if Lugo just slides normally it's 3 to 1 and we're still batting

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hi, Laura! So glad you had a great trip AND that you are home!! I really enjoyed reading about your travels.

    ReplyDelete
  79. They called the double play because Lugo touched their SS? Is that a rule or just umpire discretion? Hard to tell from the way Remy is describing it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. even with the fake out call, it's still a force, so run can't count.

    ReplyDelete
  81. We were 6-7 without you L.

Sorry about that. Things will pick up now.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Remy not bringing up that Lugo didn't even need to try to break it up because Ellsbury's running!

    ReplyDelete
  83. remy's convinced the bad feelings between the teams led the 2B umpire to call interference.

so the umpires are calling the game differently because of how the teams feel about each other lately?

    that's fucking great.

(it did look like the right call though)

    ReplyDelete
  84. to answer Amy's Q, if you try to break up a DP and they feel you couldn't have reached the bag with any part of your body, you're out

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hell ya! That's how you do it, Dice!

    ReplyDelete
  86. another TYR* in the Bronx: walk, error, HBP, and they're loaded.

    *typical yankee rally

    ReplyDelete
  87. Thanks, Jere. But that explains why Lugo was out---why would LBJ be out?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Joe Castig and Jon think the ump made the right call.

    ReplyDelete
  89. he maybe could've reached the bag with his hand, but I don't care. The guy shouldn't be sliding three feet away from the bag, risking fucking up the inning for everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Three Ks! Dice looking good.

    ReplyDelete
  91. jere: you are right, bad time for lugo to try to upend the SS

    ReplyDelete
  92. oh, sorry--I meant that in that situation, they call it a double play because the first guy effects the play at first.

    ReplyDelete
  93. like if you were to tackle the shortstop, well, he WOULD've completed the DP but didn't get to, so both runners are out

    ReplyDelete
  94. good shot at the cycle for fy, who just millared that one

    ReplyDelete
  95. WOOOHOO! he's just a single away!

    ReplyDelete
  96. FY's gonna get a cycle!!!! needs the 1B

    ReplyDelete
  97. FY's going for the cycle!!

(I just posted that on my own blog and had to delete.)

    ReplyDelete
  98. maybe Lugo will get caught stealing home with Dustin up and 2 outs in the 9th, needing just a single for the cycle...

    ReplyDelete
  99. i like guys who get the cycle and also walk.
i have no name for that feat.

    ReplyDelete
  100. oh yeah. triple. finally it's 3-1

    ReplyDelete
  101. BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!!! JD DON

    ReplyDelete
  102. Drew! Finally we have some fire!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Yanks get a run walked in. no hits in the inning, and a run scores. They have 6 runs on 4 hits, Tex has 3 runs on 6 hits.

    ReplyDelete
  104. A reverse cycle---from HR down to a single. Cool.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Ugh, Manny, where ARE you?

    ReplyDelete
  106. i always hate it when two guys in a row can't hit a sac fly.

    ReplyDelete
  107. And I do love seeing Manny's sac fly.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Come on, Tek. Stop that awful swinging at SHIT.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Texas cuts it to 6-5 after the Yanks left 'em loaded.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Good news: Kazmir over 100 pitches; Texas closing in 5-6

    ReplyDelete
  111. that is crazy. after all that we score on the WP.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Hey, maybe we *are* good luck!

    (Pardon my egotism!)

    ReplyDelete
  113. 5 runs on 8 hits through 5+ for Ponson so far. I smell standing O...

    ReplyDelete
  114. Well, Laura, be careful. You don't want to be blamed whenever you go on vacation. :)

    ReplyDelete
  115. patrick, you'd be a great volleyball scorekeeper....

    ReplyDelete
  116. im gonna see if i can get tix for sunday nights game to see the cunt pitch in person (oh how i cant stand him).
i won tix for the 4th of july game by being caller number 4 on the mike and the maddog show, can you believe that shit???

    HAHA PONSON! TIE GAME MOFO

    ReplyDelete
  117. 7-6 Rangers, another dong for Texas!

    ReplyDelete
  118. nix, I also thought tie game, until I remembered the hit off Ponson's leg

    ReplyDelete
  119. I promise you this:
Pontoon will NOT contract ASD (Aaron Small Disease).

    ReplyDelete
  120. think the yanks will try and get choke-on?

    ReplyDelete
  121. Casey Kelly---I know I will get him confused with Sean Casey.

    ReplyDelete
  122. This is what I'm talking about, the Daisuke saga is fascinating. Man he sucks, woops, I mean he's an ace.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I would prefer DiceK being consistent rather than interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Casey may be retired by the time Casey's playing.

    ReplyDelete
  125. two out walks cause me to pull out my hairs

    ReplyDelete
  126. Oh, no, not the new White Flag.

    ReplyDelete
  127. You think Casey Kelly goes on my girls team? Normally I don't go for the could-be-either-gender names, but this guy has two of those. Maybe we should make an exception.

    ReplyDelete
  128. He can be a switch hitter on the girls' team.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Amy, I can't believe you're calling Jeemer WF. He's had a bad time, for sure, but White Flag has been working on that name for years. It doesn't seem fair.

    ReplyDelete
  130. K. I'm getting psyched for the psycle!

    ReplyDelete
  131. I always like DiceK's strut as he leaves the field.

    ReplyDelete
  132. He can be a switch hitter on the girls' team.

    Sounds good to me!

    The FYcicle?

    ReplyDelete
  133. I am calling him that because lately he has earned it---he seems to come in and blow the game.

He makes me nervous the way Timlin has. But I am willing to reconsider if he has at least a few good outings. I haven't seen any in a long, long time.

    ReplyDelete
  134. With 201 coming up and Dice on the mound, I realize that we are missing Ish. He will be welcome back to New England.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Ish is the undeniable king of the 201.

(Actually I don't know if the stats prove that out, but it sounds good.)

    ReplyDelete
  136. he's the king of purposely going for 201, I'll give him that. Besides, he's got so many other good qualities.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Hey, don't be hitting My Boy!

    ReplyDelete
  138. We're winning! We're winning! Now how are we going to bridge it to the 9th ? Oki-Manny-Aardsma?

    ReplyDelete
  139. Time for that single! (Will we be happier with the single for the cycle or with a run-scoring double or more?)

    ReplyDelete
  140. Oh, poopy. Will he get another at bat....?

    ReplyDelete
  141. ah well, he'll get another AB at least

    ReplyDelete
  142. I would have been happier w/ the single for the cycle than a fly out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  143. he's due up 3rd in the 9th, though if people get on base before that, it'll be earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  144. 3 innings left on the road = guaranteed at bat for everyone in the lineup

    ReplyDelete
  145. jeemer starting an inning (i.e., no one on base) is safer.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Yeah, my math is weak tonight. Too much sun and fresh air today.

    ReplyDelete
  147. YEAH! Jeter DP and the Yanks have a squander. Still only four hits through 6, but trail only 7-6.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Well, that's a good reason. Are you at the Cape?

    ReplyDelete
  149. Well, he didn't have any inherited runners this time...

    ReplyDelete
  150. now he has to inherit his own baserunner

    ReplyDelete
  151. Yup, we are here til August! My brain should be real mush by then.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Wow, how wonderful! Sounds great.

    ReplyDelete
  153. was a broken bat hit he gave up

    ReplyDelete
