G92: Red Sox 1, Twins 0

Twins - 000 000 000 - 0 6 0
Red Sox - 000 000 01x - 1 7 0
Dice: 7.1-6-0-3-5, 108. His ERA dropped to 2.84.

Matsuzaka threw strikes -- with a good cut fastball -- and turned in his longest outing of the season. He allowed only six baserunners over the first six innings (and half of those came in the first inning). His pitch counts by inning: 25-9-10 14-12-13 13-12 = 108.

The Red Sox blew a scoring chance in the fourth. Singles from Drew and Ramirez gave Boston runners at the corners and no one out. Lowell struck out, but Youkilis walked to load the bases. However, Crisp popped to third and Varitek flied to center. (Lowell's strikeout was his only batting blemish; he walked twice and doubled.)

In the eighth, Pedroia doubled high off the Wall and took third on Drew's groundout. Manny's single to right field (his second hit of the night) brought home the only run of the game.

The Royals beat the Rays 7-4 in 10 innings, so Tampa's lead was cut to four games.

***

Scott Baker (3.65, 107 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.12, 137 ERA+)

Boston comes home after a 3-7 road trip (giving the team a 21-29 record away from Fenway Park). The Red Sox play three games against each of the Twins and Orioles before the break.

The AL East standings looks like this
             W L GB
Tampa Bay 55 32 --
Boston 52 39 5
New York 47 42 9
Baltimore 44 43 11
Toronto 42 47 14
so it looks like we've got ourselves a .... Wild Card Battle!
             W L GB
Boston 52 39 --
Minnesota 50 38 .5
Oakland 47 41 3.5
New York 47 42 4
Texas 46 43 5
Woo-hoo!

Only one other AL East game: Royals at Rays, 12:40 PM

Remember we were talking about how Rogers now runs short car commercials in between at-bats during Blue Jays game? Drunk Jays Fans is (quite rightly) fed up.

  1. KC just took a 6-3 lead over the Rays in the top of the 10th.
    About $%#&!% time....

There may have been another stretch in the past 20 years when the Sox lost more winnable games through flukes, bad luck, and bad managing, but I sure can't remember it...and my memory for horror is pretty good, unfortunately

  4. I really hope the video on that Drunk Jays Fan site is doctored.

I've seen the ads before and it's a fucking disgrace. But so help me god if those occurrences actually happened. The game's on RSN tonight...and if I miss one pitch, there will be many swears.

    ReplyDelete
  5. And WTF to Varitek's All Star nod...clearly a manager's decision there.

Fuck, one of the Molina quintuplets would've been a better selection.

  6. Bradford, 4:19 PM:
"Terry Francona just announced Justin Masterson will be headed to the bullpen, starting with a stint in Pawtucket."

Jeff "Gumball" Bailey is up from Pawtucket.

  7. The video was made by someone. Not an actual broadcast.

Tek was voted in by the players.

  8. And WTF to Varitek's All Star nod...clearly a manager's decision there.

    Players, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  9. However, given his recent proclivities, which include deciding that Tek is a great hit-and-run man and a perfect pinch-hitter as his average goes lower and lower, we can expect Tito to pinch-hit him for Josh Hamilton at a crucial point in the game in order to get a right-left advantage.

Flukes, Luck , and Managing....How about players underperforming and not holding leads and looking at picture perfect stikes right down the cock...I can't believe how lost this team looks at times....

  12. Fact: Teams on a skid look like shit.

    Example:
Red Sox 2004 ALCS 1-3: SHIT
Red Sox 2004 ALCS 4-7: NOT SHIT

Exact same team. A world of differnece.

At first, no one could do anything good, then no one could make a mistake.

  13. Last year I wanted the Sox to win the division more than anything else. Now that we did that (easily!), I feel like the wild card + a Yankee-less October would be fine.

Not that I'm giving up on the division, but if Tampa wins the division and we are still in the playoffs, and the Yankees finish 10 games out, it will still be great.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agreed, L. I wanted to win the division at least once, but I'm not too worried about it now.

This is a huge homestand. So far this year, Fenway has cured all that has ailed us - let's hope the trend continues.

    Keep me updated tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  15. wow, it feel like forever since we've been at fenway

    ReplyDelete
  16. I heard that Tek was voted second in the players vote, and Tito chose him because of that. Seems to be the story with the media. Manager's decision, based on players voting.

  17. I have to get used to this camera angle again. Haven't seen it in awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  18. don says rhe 7 red sox on the all star team are the most since the white sox had 7 back in ...

    2006!!!

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anyone seen Nate Silver's PECOTA predictions for the November elections, btw? Utah is the Barry Bonds of the lower 48 this year.

    ReplyDelete
  20. exactly why the camera angle is so dumb--we have to "Get used to it" every time the team goes home/goes on the road. But I'm so effed up because of it I'm trying to do new math with every hit to estimate where the ball's going.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i didnt like the new camera angle at first, but after watching a couple of games and really being able to see the movement better on pitches, i dont mind it

    ReplyDelete
  22. exactly why the camera angle is so dumb--we have to "Get used to it" every time the team goes home/goes on the road.

But does it take you more than a pitch or two?

    ReplyDelete
  23. many people probably hated when they switched from the high home camera as the main shot.

jere: why you can't tell where the ball is hit is a mystery to me. that has not changed at all for me.

straight on makes much more sense than seeing things at an angle.

    ReplyDelete
  24. nix: you must still be in stage 2: "Hey, I think I kinda like this."

    Cherish that stage, my friend.

My biggest problem is the having to "get used to it," since the team's going home/road/ home/road.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Mark Texiera is a name that's being thrown around as a kind of guy the Red Sox could be looking for toward the deadline. Big bat for a short time, in case Ortiz or Manny struggle in the second half....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Watching every game, I look at any batted ball now, and my mind tries to figure out which camera I'm going from. Like, in the old days, I knew right where a ball was going. Now it's off by 20 feet either way, which is a big difference. A ball "up the middle" on the new angle was right to the shortstop on the old.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anyone seen Nate Silver's PECOTA predictions for the November elections, btw? Utah is the Barry Bonds of the lower 48 this year.

FiveThirtyEight.com is my favorite website ever (after joy of sox). It makes me almost want to study math. (That takes a lot)

    Joe, where are you tonight?

At home, in Lynn, taking on the Danbury Westerners. My only duties tonight are to prepare for a light feature interview with the team's third baseman, and do live scoring updates on the website, so I'll be free to chit chat for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 2 outs on 8 pitches
then 17 more pitches to get the 3rd out
    sigh

    ReplyDelete
  29. And fly balls--my god--very hard to tell how far they're going from the higher camera angle. I hate dat....

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mark Texiera is a name that's being thrown around as a kind of guy the Red Sox could be looking for toward the deadline. Big bat for a short time, in case Ortiz or Manny struggle in the second half....

I like. I think there's a lot of potential reward to a move like that and I don't think you'd have to mortgage the farm to get him. Also, I want no part of Bonds.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Watching Rays/Royals highlights and the network this game was on do not hire quality cameramen. Worst camera movements I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  32. "Jack Daniels starting lineup". Is that a public service announcement?

    ReplyDelete
  33. There are good things about a head-on view, of course. I noticed the Cardinals do it, too. (And of course the O's are pretty close to dead center.)

I prefer the classic way, though. OR, just switch every park over to head-on.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i had espn muted last night, but was gammo saying the sox were talking about bonds, which might mean tiz may not be back as soon as they think? ... i would assume they are "talking" internally about a lot of things, though.

    was what gammo said noteworthy?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Jere, I keep thinking you must be kidding, but I realize you're not.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The highlights channel 4 showed of the Tampa game appeared to be taken off mlb.tv.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd love to be able to game thread at the ballpark in a place like Lynn or Sanford or anywhere, really. And do light interviews and live scoring on the website.

I am now used to the camera angle. That didn't take long.

Plus, Jere, they still use the angled camera - you'll see it on replays and if this current camera wobbles due to wind, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My picture's jumping all over the place for no good reason (THANKS COMCAST!), but at least I have a national broadcast out of market.

    ReplyDelete
  39. the cable package is showing espn, but since the jays are off, we got nesn on rogers.

    ReplyDelete
  40. was what gammo said noteworthy?

Only in the sense that the Sox are looking at plan b's in case 'Tiz can't go after the break.

As for Teixera - Is he worth 20 Mil / year? Supposedly that is what he is looking at for the next 3 or 4 years. Plus the Braves will want an arm and two legs for him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Right, I know they show the old angle occasionally, and it makes me realize how great it was! *wipes tear

The wind shaking the new robot camera--another reason to can it. Like I'm watching an earthquake sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  42. it's not "classic" if you grew up with the high home shot.

when did the CF camera start, anyway? i'm thinking early 70s?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ish, it's a lot of fun, it really is. We need a photographer, it's too bad you're too far away. Maybe you should meet up with us in Sanford - how far is that from you?

So, guys and gals, if you were reading a light interview with a collegiate baseball player, what are some of the questions you'd want to see answered?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sure wish they would get rid of the echo chamber on NESN.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Texiera for Lugo and someone else would be fantastic. Call up Lowrie to take his place... That'd be magic.

I heard Ortiz was hitting bombs past the bullpens tonight, though.

How would Tex fit in, though? If he's a first baseman... I wonder if Sean Casey would be on the trading block?

    ReplyDelete
  46. right, they used to show from above home plate. But what every single park's been doing for so long is "my" classic--so either make a changeover across the board or don't.

I don't know when CF cam started, but I do know Yankee Stadium had the camera on the left field side of center, which is still weird to see highlights of.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ish, it's a lot of fun, it really is. We need a photographer, it's too bad you're too far away. Maybe you should meet up with us in Sanford - how far is that from you?

Sanford's only about 25-30 miles. That'd be awesome. What kind of photos do you guys look for?

    ReplyDelete
  48. joe, were you doing this last year? If so, did you interview Rich Gedman's son when he was on the Sanford Mainers?

    ReplyDelete
  49. No mention of the CC Sabathia trade, btw? I guess we're agnostic.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You know, just game/stadium photos. Shots of the fans are always fun too.

We're in Sanford on July 23, and there's a good chance we'll be playing the Mainers in the playoffs as well at some point during the first week of August. (knock on wood)

    ReplyDelete
  51. 25 through one.
    34 through two.
Good to bring the pitchcount down.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The local Joe Morgan is on the radio.

    ReplyDelete
  53. joe, were you doing this last year? If so, did you interview Rich Gedman's son when he was on the Sanford Mainers?

This is the Navs' first year of existence, so no. However, the previous tenant of Fraser was the independent North Shore Spirit, and Rich Gedman was one of their coaches in 2003 and 2004. I got his autograph and met him a few times.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah, I went to see Gedman as a coach of the Spirit when they played the Berkshire Black Bears (closest park in the league to me at the time) a few years back.

    ReplyDelete
  55. ANd it all comes together--my 1980 Pawtucket Red Sox team picture arrived in the mail today, featuring Rich Gedman and (Walpole's) Joe Morgan.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm 90% sure Gedman is still the manager of the Worcester Tornadoes.

Wahconah is now home of the Pittsfield Dukes in the NECBL - maybe I'll run into you there some time.

    ReplyDelete
  57. How far away from Lynn do you live, Joe? Does it cost you much money to get to the ballpark?

For your interview, it'd be interesting to find out if there is any player they want to play like. Past, present, majors, minors, college, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  58. No mention of the CC Sabathia trade, btw? I guess we're agnostic.

I thought we talked about it last night's thread.

Btw, I agreed with Remy, I thought last night's game was great, even though it didn't turn out well for us. An exciting game with a lot going on.

That's how much faith I have in this team! I can even enjoy a loss now and again.

    ReplyDelete
  59. And it all comes together--my 1980 Pawtucket Red Sox team picture arrived in the mail today, featuring Rich Gedman and (Walpole's) Joe Morgan.

  61. Texiera for Lugo and someone else would be fantastic.

I suspect Lugo's not going to go too far towards getting Tex. But it is a funny idea, as if there is a long-term agreement between us and the Braves about shortstops. Or maybe the Boston owners lost a colassal bet and now have to provide a free-agent shortstop at half price in perpetuity.

    ReplyDelete
  62. That's how much faith I have in this team! I can even enjoy a loss now and again.

It was interesting last night. Yankees won and I just kinda shrugged it off, myself.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Waconah was just the closest to me in Danbury (pre-Westerners' existence). I have moved a bunch since, and even if I hadn't, it's not like that was my local park anyway. But I do recommend the place--with its sun delays and rafter owls.

    ReplyDelete
  64. How far away from Lynn do you live, Joe? Does it cost you much money to get to the ballpark?

I live in Revere - about a 15 minute drive from the park. I take the bus, so all told it probably takes me about 45 minutes on an average day. I pay $15 a week for a T pass (I lobbied unsuccessfully to have it paid for by the team, but it's all good because students can write transit passes off of their taxes)

    ReplyDelete

Yeah, unfortunately for us, Atlanta has a very good shortstop in Escobar.

    ReplyDelete
  67. That car looks like a hearse.

  68. i sure didnt shrug off last nights loss.
its bothering me still, but i always get that way when they face the yanks.

Thanks L, BH is sleeping so have some time during the game to actually thread. Have to keep my eye on the laundry though.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I agree with Nix. I did shrug it off--but only after vomiting my brains out after watching the Yanks beat us on a bullshit roller that almost died before reaching the outfield when we're clearly the better team.

That's too bad there's not too much money in it. A game or two would be okay, but it gets hard to do it regularly - of course, I'm saying this without having a job at the moment. But man. That sounds so tempting. Photographing baseball and stadiums and fans and baseball players. That's something I wouldn't mind doing on a larger stage later in life.

  84. Questions so far for Kyle Geason (3B from Eden Prairie, MN, and the University of Minnesota)

-This team has a mix of Southerners, New England guys, and West Coasters. What's the culture in the clubhouse been like for a guy from the midwest?

-Just how bad are the Minnesota winters? Does New England in the summertime feel tropical to you?

-What are three things about the University of Minnesota that most people don't know?

-You redshirted this year, and it seemed to impact you at the start of the summer as you got off to a bit of a slow start. How much did it affect you, and in what ways? Are you finally feeling back in the swing of things?

-It’s 2 a.m. in Minneapolis and you’re practically starving. Where do you go to fix the craving?

-What’s been your favorite road trip so far? What has it been like seeing all of these towns all over New England?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Personally I think that Chad Finn summed it up best for me on Lugo - Julio Lugo: The worst. At what? Why, everything. Haven't you been watching? (All right, that was a sweet leaping catch on the line drive, and it's always nice to see Jeter look foolish. And he's better than Cora. So he's the second-worst. My apologies, Julio. Keep on keepin' on.)

    ReplyDelete
  86. lugo setting baker up for later.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Ish, I'd contact the Sanford Mainers this winter - I bet you they'd be willing to take you on as a photography intern if you ask early enough. Yeah, you don't get paid and it can become a bit of a grind, but spending nights at the ballpark is a joy, it's great experience, and it's a great line for your resume.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Lyndon my boy, could you start hitting again please?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Those are good questions. I like those questions where they can have a good time answering them themselves. Kind of those offbeat questions to let people in on just what it's like.

  90. I'm assuming we're still scoreless at the Fens.

    ReplyDelete
  91. scoreless at the fens, yes.

  92. Here with my family --- all Yankee fans but my daughter and me. Last night's game was NOT fun (at least the last few innings). I miss you all, but hard to thread with all these people here.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Too much for one of those fans to lean over?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Yeah, good questions. I always have trouble thinking of good q's.

A lot of times the trick is in the follow-up - listening closely to the answer and going after more detail. At least for print journalism.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I was out of range or otherwise engaged for every game of the Yankees series, so I didn't experience the ups, downs, and frustrations. But I figure we split in their park, winning handily twice and losing narrowly twice -- that's not bad.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Nice catch by Lenny DiNardo Spann crashing into the wall just in front of the Pesky Pole to end inning

    ReplyDelete
  97. Zen, you're right. And last night could have gone either way. Only in the Saturday game we looked awful. AWOL.

That's a skill that I'm trying to develop. I generally only pre-plan maybe 8 questions so I can come up with the rest on the fly, but I'm not very good at it yet.

  119. im only speaking on the performance of late.
    i didnt predict outs though...

    ReplyDelete
  120. Good, then we have to get a run for my prediction to come true.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I know. That was partly my intent.

    ReplyDelete
  122. keep it alive tek, lugo is set to fuck this guy up.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Crisp popup and lugo force out

Which leaves Tek to get a hit!!!

except Tek sucks with bases loaded.

    ReplyDelete
  124. fly out, new camera blamed, squander.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Well, how nice. Bases loaded w/ one out, no one scored.

    I suck!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Another Sox Squander (TM)

    Where is Papiiiiiiiii?? :'(

    ReplyDelete
  127. Forgot to remember that Lugo can still force out at the bottom of the next inning.

    ReplyDelete
  128. -It’s tied in the bottom of the 9th in game 3 of the NECBL championship series. The bases are loaded with two outs. Excluding yourself, who do you feel most comfortable with at the plate in that situation to come through and bring home the title?

-What’s been the best thing about playing in Lynn so far?

-What’s the one aspect of your game that you think you need to work on the most?

-If you could study abroad for one semester, anywhere in the world, where would you want to go and what would you want to study?

-If baseball doesn’t work out for you, where do you see yourself in ten years? What are some of your other career interests?

    ReplyDelete
  129. well he could force himself out at first, if you consider that a "force out."

    ReplyDelete
  130. So getting voted the starting All Star catcher is a lifetime achievement award, right?

    ReplyDelete
  131. pitchers duel, or suck-offense duel?

    ReplyDelete
  132. pitchers duel, or suck-offense duel?

Seems to me like suck-offense, watching it via blog.

    ReplyDelete
  133. joe, I suggest making the team be down a run in question 1--being tied is a little less pressure. Just sayin', it's probably a different answer between tied and losing.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Those are all good. If you're short on time, you could kill the study abroad q.

But what do I know, maybe the guy has always dreamed of studying architecture in Rome or something.

    ReplyDelete
  135. So getting voted the starting All Star catcher is a lifetime achievement award, right?

Tek? Gotta be. But he's not the starting catcher.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Why would a ballplayer wanna study a broad? Oh wait.....

    ReplyDelete
  137. Are there weird graphics on the ESPN broadcast when the bat hits the ball, or is that just my unstable picture?

    ReplyDelete
  138. But he's not the starting catcher.

    What? Tek was robbed.

    ReplyDelete

  139. But what do I know, maybe the guy has always dreamed of studying architecture in Rome or something.

HAHA, the last guy I asked that question to wanted to study in Rome, partly because of the beautiful architecture.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Enough already about the all-star game .who really cares besides agents and players children , who get paraded all around during the wonderful festivities, And I also am impressed with all these ballpalyers videotaping the HR contest. Its on tv you idiots....

    ReplyDelete
  141. HAHA, the last guy I asked that question to wanted to study in Rome, partly because of the beautiful architecture.

    Are you serious? How funny.

I just thought the q sounds a little elitist.

    ReplyDelete
  142. 9C, I agree about the ASG, but videotaping something you were at is way different than watching it on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  143. i think i am going to miss the all star game this year on purpose. the toilet lovefest may be too much to handle.

    ReplyDelete
  144. This game is on ESPN? We're lucky the Jays are off, so Rogers puts on NESN.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Jacoby looks bad on the K, 2 out 0 on

I agree it just bothers me, I'm in one of those moods

  147. I'm in one of those moods

    that's obvious :)

    ReplyDelete
  148. It'll be cool to see all those Red Sox home unis taking over the Stadium, though.

    ReplyDelete
  151. 70 pitches for d-k through 5, geez he might make it to the 7th for once.

lets have an all star inning (OTT) here dice k!!!

    ReplyDelete
  152. i's rather watch a player's camcorder than tv -- they probably have lots of candid chats with everyone, lots of stuff we never see/hear.

timlin gave each teammate a dvd of stuff he shot during the 04 playoffs. i'd *love* to see that!

    ReplyDelete
  153. lots of beauty in italy - of all types

    ReplyDelete
  154. dien bien PHU, popped him up. 1 out

    ReplyDelete
  155. the beautiful architecture...of italian women?

    Not a bad reason

    ReplyDelete
  156. Don't they have AL and NL unis? Or is that only for the HR Derby?

    ReplyDelete
  157. On the one hand, this stutter picture is annoying me to no end. On the other hand, it makes it impossible to see bad ump calls, reducing the corresponding annoyance.

    ReplyDelete
  158. i know, but he was being gender specific. i thought that was his joke, about the guy interested in "italian arch. meaning the women.

    ReplyDelete
  159. They wear their team unis, afair.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Nah, he seemed really interested in the architecture.

He's a student at Trinity College, which has a sat\tellite campus in Roma.

    ReplyDelete
  161. 2 out double off the scoreboard

    ReplyDelete
  162. I think they jus wear the league jerseys for HR derby and photo-ops, and wear team jerseys during the game.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Nix.who is that .....Jack Torrance?

    ReplyDelete
  164. what happened??? rogers just left the game and went to commercial. we're looking for the game on the other station
