G110: Red Sox 2, Athletics 1 (12)

Athletics - 000 000 010 000 - 1 7 0
Red Sox - 010 000 000 001 - 2 11 2
Jason Bay (#44) scored both runs as the Red Sox win in extras!

Bay - who received a long standing ovation when he came to the plate in the second inning -- reached based in four of his six plate appearances.

He walked and scored in the second, was hit in the back by a pitch in the fourth, struck out in the sixth and eighth, walked in the tenth, and then tripled with two out in the twelfth.

After J.D. Drew was intentionally walked, Jed Lowrie chopped a grounder that Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby could not make a clean play on and Bay scored the winning run.

Wakefield (6.1-4-0-3-4, 108) was superb and the bullpen was solid.

Tampa Bay beat Detroit 5-2 and Los Angeles shutout New York 1-0, so the Red Sox stay 3 GB and the Yankees fall to 5.5 GB.

Justin Duchscherer (2.37, 165 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (3.94, 112 ERA+)

A wise man once said: "The players come, the players go, we stay."

... and so the Jason Bay era begins.

And it begins against perhaps the best pitcher in baseball. In 16 of his 18 starts, Duchscherer has allowed two or fewer earned runs (on May 24, he threw a 8-1-0-0-4 line at the Red Sox).

Duchscherer leads the major league in ERA, WHIP (0.94, one of only two starters under 1.00), fewest hits allowed per 9 IP (6.96), lowest opponents average (.199) and lowest opponents slugging percentage (.309). He is a close second among MLB starters in lowest opponents on-base percentage (.255, with Dan Haren at .253).

In the six games of this homestand, the Sox are 1-5 with a .240/.303/.375 batting line. In the 12 games since the All-Star Game, they are hitting .241/.330/.360 and have slipped from .5 GA to 3 GB.

Last 30: 17-13 14-16 17-13
Also at 7 PM: Tigers/Rays and Angels/Yankees

  1. Manny's OPS+ = 140
    Jay Bay's = 135

(On base plus slugging, adjusted for park and league factors)

The difference is negligible I think. Throw in Bay's speed and intelligence on the basepaths and I think he's a damn good replacement in terms of the numbers. If the rest of the team was annoyed by Manny, hopefully now that this is done they'll be able to focus on playing the game and winning some ballgames.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Yeah, even when further adjusting for the weaker NL. Plus, Bay is 7 years younger and he'll free up $$ for next year's roster.

Being Mannyless sucks, but Theo was able to grab a very nice replacement.

  3. At least we didn't trade him for 10 bats.

  4. Manny traded for a Zagnut and a swift kick in the ass. "Manny's goin' deep tonight."

Very glad this is an off day, too. We'll be back at full power tomorrow.

So ...... how long until someone uses BAY WATCH in a headline?

    Thu Jul 31, 09:09:00 PM

    That was fast.

    ReplyDelete
  9. fuck, im prolly not going to be able to watch it on nesn, as direct-tv blacksout other red sox programming. right now for the next couple of hours its "red sox classics" and they always get blacked out.
sucks, looks like i'll have to listen on weei.com (ugh)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wait...blacked out cause youre in NY?

I'm relying on my slingbox + directv to watch the PC on NESN...directv subscribed address is in Maine, for the purpose of being able to watch Red Sox baseball.

  11. Saw Brandon Moss' first defensive chance in RF for Pittsburgh (at Wrigley) on Sopcast, and his first AB. He fouled off two pitches, took a high fastball for a ball, then struck out swinging.

His first defensive chance was a nice running catch and a throw to first to double off Fukudome.

  13. HOLY SHIT!

Just got this email from the Guardian in the UK:

"Hi - we liked your tribute to Manny so much that we've linked to your blog.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/america
and click on the photo of Manny at Fenway Park.
    Thanks."

  14. yeah, becuase i live in NY, most programming that has to do with RED SOX games that inst carried by direct tv gets blacked out. so even if its a red sox classic, or a replay of the game, i cant see it.

i can see red sox report, pregame, etc.
right now its red sox classic, and its blacked out. doesnt maine have nesn? so you should get it regardless...

how does slingbox work around the blackout? doesnt it just link direct to yr tv? if you kived in NY you'd be wathcing a black screen via yr slingbox, no?

  19. That's sweet redsock! This place is teh rox0rz!

I live in Canada. My mom lives in Maine, and my Dad prefers US TV to Canada for whatever reason. Due to the unreliability of stealing satellite signals, we got a DirecTV subscription and used my Mom's Maine address for the subscription so I can watch NESN.

Right now, I'm not living at home where the DirecTV is cause I'm up at university - so I got myself a slingbox. Basically you put the video out from the satellite into the slingbox and hook the slingbox up to your internet router. Then you download the slingplayer and can log in and watch the slingbox from anywhere.

  24. tim, thanks. yeah i've read a lot about the slingbox, it sounds pretty awesome.

but maine gets nesn anyway, right?

nice move on yr part regardless!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I haven't been anywhere in Maine that didn't seem to have NESN on its basic cable package.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I won't be able to join you tonight (and I'll miss Manny's debut with the Bums as well)... I hope we win. [sob!]

    I'm sad.

Oh, and sportswriters suck. Each and every one. I may eventually be reconciled to one or two of them, but it won't be soon.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ahh, thats what I figured. I'm happy with it, a very idiot-proof machine.

She's up in Searsport (assuming you know where that is...populations like 2500 or something.) - beside Belfast.

Nice scenic area, I guess the whole state is basically, a lot of fat people though, and poor. Apparently it's one of the poorest counties (Waldo)...I dunno, she spends a lot of her time in Miami for work (about 1/2 of 2007) and they're considering moving there once her husband finishes his MBA (he was laid off a couple years ago due to outsourcing, so the state has some program where they pay for you to upgrade your skills to get another job)

    ReplyDelete
  28. She's up in Searsport (assuming you know where that is...populations like 2500 or something.) - beside Belfast.

I actually drove through Searsport last month.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, redsock, that's fantastic about the Guardian! And well deserved!

I hope this means someone will bring it to Manny's attention. (That makes me feel a little less sad.)

    ReplyDelete
  30. NESN still hasn't cut away from Classics.

    ReplyDelete
  31. From the paper's main page, if you click "Comment", then "America", it's the top story! Very curious about how much traffic will come over...

In shittier news, there is a ton of Powerpoint editing/formatting to do. We'll see how much game I get to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeh Maine gets NESN but I have no way of getting NESN in Canada besides illegally subscribing or pirating DirecTV or Dish Net...which is why I subscribed to Direct in Maine, in order to avoid the blackouts.

I also have a mailbox in Niagara Falls, NY - which is actually how I initially subscribed to DirecTV.

The first night when I found out about this MLB blackout shit, I had to call DirecTV to tell them I was moving :P (after being subscribed for like a day) That was a fun one. They wanted to come install a new dish on the house and everything. Oh, and I can't call DirecTV from Canada so I had to download some sort of internet phone thingy and use that to call. Oh, and I didn't have a mic for my computer so I had to use a pair of headphones to speak into.

So if anyone ever questions my fandom of this team - blow it out your ass!

All 5 minutes of it? :P

Aww goddammit! One of the audio wires came loose on the slingbox so I only get it on the left speaker. I've had this problem before.

  57. last night listening to the overnight on ESPN radio. the guy hosting was describing the red sox now as Theo being darth vader (ruthless), and all the players being the storm troopers, all in a line, not saying anything and doing their job in fear.

    what a cock.

a la Manny as well, I'd say.

Tim, I'm still sore. I didn't wake up more sore than I was last night, but I'm still sore on my left side. I did NOT have a nice time seeing the car, especially with it sitting with other crashed cars.

It pisses me off because right now, I'm having a hard time leaving home and feeling relatively safe about it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i hope i like bay, but i'll always LOVE manny.

    ReplyDelete
  62. And, we're on the fence as to whether it'll be written off or need to be repaired. I don't mind driving, but I just don't want to drive that car again.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Oh yeah, a la Manny as well. O-Cab just came to mind because of the whole deadline dealing...

Man, that sucks ish. But I guess it could have been A LOT worse.

So you were on the side that got hit? Shit.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm a stats idiot because I don't consult them first but why not Drew in cleanup?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yeah, I know what you mean about not wanting to drive again. Which is why I'm thankful my car was a writeoff.

You know what I just realized? Your accident was exactly one year after mine. Weird as hell.

My car accident was on Thursday, August 2, 2007 (the Thursday before the long weekend in Canada). I guess not one year to the day, but still...

    ReplyDelete
  66. andy, I think Tito didn't want to have two lefties (Tiz and Drew) back to back.

    ReplyDelete
  67. So you were on the side that got hit? Shit.

Yeah. I was driving - most of the damage was the driver's side door.

What was the nature of your accident?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Here it is, ish

And to answer l-girl's post from that thread, no drinking involved. The worst part about it was that I was actually trying to set an example for the passenger in the car by not drinking, as he's driven drunk before.

If there's anything that I'm vehemently opposed to its just that.

  72. Afternoon, everybody. Big day today for the Sox, eh?

Batting Bay 5th is a good move - let's see how Kid Canada does there before we put him in Manny's spot. Batting Drew 6th makes me sad, though. Of course, Tito wouldn't bat Drew 3rd over Ortiz in a billion years.

Kudos to redsock for making it to the Guardian! Best source of US news there is. No surprise that it's not American. Their soccer stuff is a joy to read, as well.

  79. heard an interview with ned colletti, and the question was asked "what did torre say when you first approached him about possibly getting manny"

his response was something to the effect that he didnt have to get further in the sentence than "theres a chance we might get manny ram-"

to which torre interupted and said "get him"

  83. sorry if you'd seen these numbers before, and i know the OPS+ numbers are close, but the road OPS numbers are a bit futher apart.

    manny's OPS last 3 years ('06-'08)
    on the road:
    990, 871, 941

Bay's OPS '06-'08 on the road:
    925, 766, 848

i'm not sure how to weight ops+ vs. ops on the road...

also, Bay has only 7 homers on the road this year.

LMAO. I would have really considered it if I hadn't just gotten kicked in the side by a one ton pickup truck. At this point, though, I'm sad to say it's quite a long shot. I'd say there's a 5% chance I'd be able to do it.

  118. He has a similar batting stance as Derrek Lee.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Who is this bloke?

He certainly looks like a football player from your way, Lord, doesn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Great welcome for bay :)

Now bring him home, JD Power!

    ReplyDelete
  121. And he gets a hit!!! NICE.

    Welcome efd former lurker. :)

    ReplyDelete
  122. OMG LOOK AT THAT! THATS HOW YOU RUN!

    /mediot

    ReplyDelete
  123. Whew. Manny would've GIDP right there then assaulted Suzuki.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I've always heard it pronounced Duke-sher.

    Bye again.

    ReplyDelete
  125. A walk for Bay...

    He's one of us now.

    ReplyDelete
  126. speaking of uniform numbers (as they just were on NESN), from what Manny said in the press conference (at least the few minutes I've watched) it sounds like #99 was not his idea.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Oh, it's easy to love Bay after that. He just caught my heart the easiest way possible.

    ReplyDelete
  128. It is pronounced duke-scher.

    ReplyDelete
  129. And he scores a run! Crowd going wild. The Bay era begins.

I'm not ready for it yet, still pretty sad about the end of the other era. But here it is, ready or not.

    ReplyDelete
  130. i heard manny was going to have 28

    ReplyDelete
  131. who, ish?

Generalizing. Maybe I mean stereotypical football fanatic.

    ReplyDelete
  132. CASH DIDNT HUSTLE DOWN THE LINE!!!! HE SHOULD BE THROWN OFF THE TEAM!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Don't want to go on about it but did anyone catch the Manny conference? I can't get it in England so just wondering if anything interesting was said?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Remy: "Always been a fan of Manny."

I got plenty of blog posts that say otherwise, Jerry.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Talking about MBM ducking games as an established fact.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Remy: "He annoyed me when he didn't run out balls."

Does anyone out there have Remy's email address?

    ReplyDelete
  137. yeah -- just yanked out the ear phone.

so i'd rather not know anything about the game than hear that.

    ReplyDelete
  138. shut the fuck up jerry remy. is it respect for the game to sell t-shirts and talk about a little doll for the whole game????

and now he says "i'm not going to manny-bash".

so we get to sit and listen to management's position, with no other POV, as if it's all fact.

fuck you jerry remy. you and your respect for the game.

at least he admitted the sox wanted to get manny out of town no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Remy "I'm not going to Manny bash."

Er Jerry? Thats what your doing.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I take it that NESN is owned by the Boston Red Sox....

    ReplyDelete
  141. I was typing that out before I read the comments. Cool.

    ReplyDelete
  142. My dog chased a porcupine up a tree on our walk today. It was cool getting that close to one. My dog escaped un-pricked.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Listen to him run down Manny's fielding skills, too! "He's a great ballplayer - a great hitter, I should say..."

"I mean, I like the guy, I really do."

    With friends like that.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Amazing - these clowns barely mention anything outside the game being played in front of them every single night -- now the deal is done, you can't shut them up about this shit.

    FO whores.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Lord, yes, NESN is the Red Sox's station.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Whatever makes you think that lord lynch lol?

    ReplyDelete
  147. Why did Remy correct himself when he said "a great ballplayer" - er, there was no doubt Manny was that.

Why would you stop on that?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Hey Patrick, I'm just tuning in now, but where in NH are you? I have friends who might take that gauntlet you've just thrown down, if you want to trust the friends of your imaginary friends...

    ReplyDelete
  149. Someone should send Remy this game thread. Hmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  150. HEY JERRY REMY, YOU'RE NO MANNY RAMIREZ.

    ReplyDelete
  151. God - have you gone to Remy's site lately? What a fucking mess.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I don't know danndann?

All I know for a nation that can't abide communism, that didn't half sound like the Red Sox version of Pravda.....

    ReplyDelete
  153. Good thing I went for a nice bathroom break that inning. Sounds like what I was listening to was about the equivalent of what you all were listening to.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Don't want to go on about it but did anyone catch the Manny conference?

DannDann, I DVR'd it and posted one early comment about it earlier, but too busy this this game to watch the rest of it at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  155. At least by trading for Jason Bay, I can say now I have seen a Red Sox player in a game in the flesh.....

    ReplyDelete
  156. You like American Football, Lynch? Do you have a favorite team? Feel free to say the Giants if that's the case. You are across the ocean.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Heidi and I are wearing the same colour shirt!

    ReplyDelete
  158. jerry@theremyreport.com ?

    ReplyDelete
  159. Kingston, Jamaica, I mean NH.

    Is said friend a Niece?

    ReplyDelete
  160. too busy this this game

    err, *with* this game.

Still getting the hang of this watching/posting thing.

    ReplyDelete
  161. That half inning was a disgrace from NESN's point of view; spending a whole half inning of a live game burning a former player.

The best part of it being that they got the stupid ex-player to do it and fall over himself a couple of times in the process.

I like Manny but I don't like him but...er...I'm not going to Manny bash...but er...it was time to go. Where's my paycheque dammit?!

    ReplyDelete
  162. wannabuymyshit@theremyreport.com?

    ReplyDelete
  163. patrick... I support an AL East rival.... and have done for 25 years...

    ReplyDelete
  164. Heidi and I are wearing the same colour shirt!

are you gonna post it on Ebay?

    ReplyDelete
  165. i love this whole "its definitely time to move on from manny ramirez" slogan thats being said about every 10 seconds...
but they aren't moving on! its all they're talking about! guess who's moved on, manny!

    i hate nesn sometimes...

    ReplyDelete
  166. Well, I just saw Heidi for the first time. I must say, I'm not impressed.
