G126: Red Sox 7, Orioles 2

Red Sox - 210 030 010 - 7 15 1
Orioles - 002 000 000 - 2 9 1
Dice (5-6-2-5-6, 105) stranded nine base runners in his five innings, Jason Varitek homered for the second straight night, and Kevin Youkilis homered and singled twice, driving in three runs.

Yook's dong was the key hit, as it increased Boston's lead from 3-2 to 5-2. Everyone in the lineup helped out: the first nine Red Sox hits were spread out evenly -- one each for batter in the order.

Jacoby Ellsbury singled twice, stole two bases and scored two runs. Justin Masterson pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

We're doing our part. Keep winning and hope that eventually the Rays lose a couple games in a row ...

Tampa Bay scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to rally from behind and beat the Angels 4-2. Toronto scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to squeak past New York 2-1, dropping the Yankees 11 GB the Rays. The Blue Jays are in 4th place, 12 GB.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.74, 164 ERA+) / Daniel Cabrera (4.78, 91 ERA+)

In his last nine starts (since June 27), Dice has a 1.91 ERA.

In his wins and no-decisions this season, Dice has an 1.87 ERA (115.2 IP, 95% of his innings)! In his losses -- only six innings -- his ERA is 19.50.

SoSH discusses a possible aspect of his pitching philosophy -- would Dice rather walk a guy than "give in" and allow a hit? Are his high walk totals more of a strategy than a lack of control? The many walks -- and the subsequent higher pitch count -- mean more work for the bullpen, however.

And: Angels/Rays and Yankees/Blue Jays at 7 PM.

I thought I was joking when I said this a few days ago here...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Tingling and numbness for Beckett? Oi. Sure, you could still throw 96 with that, but I'll bet you'd have a hard time with your location.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Just five comments at game time.

Maybe some more right now! Jacoby gets things started with a base knock.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Jacoby getting his turbo going!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I missed My Boy's hit but got here in time to see the steal!

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's Jacoby being a lead-off hitter right there. Need more of that.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thought for the day: I miss Manny. The lineup misses Manny.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't see why the trade-off of hits and walks sounds so implausible to some. If he's pitching mostly around the edges, as long as he doesn't overdo it, there'll be less good contact. Makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  12. he has to challenge hitters at some point, obviously, but runners can advance only one base on a walk.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Could I be blacked out of an O's game because I'm in Richmond? Does that make sense? Fuckers.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I hate the heat but here's why I love summer. Dinner:
    chicken on the bbq
    fresh Ontario corn
    fresh Ontario asparagus
vanilla frozen yogurt w/ wild blackberries and blueberries picked in Vermont

    ReplyDelete
  15. COOKIE. He just missed that one.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi, all. On phone, but here, watching.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Could I be blacked out of an O's game because I'm in Richmond?

    Absolutely.

    ReplyDelete
  18. We've had an amazing afternoon over this way. Never made it above 71° but by 1:00 there was full sunshine. Tonight we're looking at lows in the 40s!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ofer, you can't get MASN where you are?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Of course, there are a few hitters here and there you want to pitch around, but I wouldn't want to make a habit out of it.

    Little blooper and it's 1-0!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ha, ha!

It is my non-statistical impression that Cabrera vs. the Sox = a good deal for us.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's strange. The expectation and hope for Dice-K when he came over was for him to eat innings and pitch deep into ballgames. He's got so many pitches, it'd be amazing to see how he'd do if he did challenge more hitters. Trust the defense!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love Youk's versatility. You can put him in virtually ANYWHERE. He's not your prototypical lead-off hitter, but he did well there. Same can be said for the clean-up spot, but here he is, and it works. He's not Manny, but he's been doing well in that spot.

Put him at first, third, outfield. He just works. It's very impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It is my non-statistical impression that Cabrera vs. the Sox = a good deal for us.

Unless, of course, he decides to go head hunting.

  25. Ha! I just beat the system- using my verizon card, which doesn't know where it is or something cause it has no set IP, works. I can watch the game.

    That's awesome!

Reminds me of those AT&T laptop...

    RIBEYE!!!

...connect cards. I'm in a swamp, and look what I found! The internet!

In this case it'd be, "I found the internet, but I don't know where the hell I am!"

    Well done!

The funny thing is it's always the other way around- the card isn't supposed to work, since they don't know where it is, so they assume the worst and black out all of them. So I always need to use the hotel's wireless or something. But tonight it's the other way around.

Anyway, I should stop talking about this. MLB probably has agents monitoring blogs to catch criminals like me.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It sounds strange to say it, but I guess Dice-K is kind of a pitcher in the Nolan Ryan style. Doesn't exactly have the same stuff, though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yaz is undergoing bypass surgery...

I guess it was serious after all.

    ReplyDelete
  33. That was a good throw. That was a good steal.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ofer, what's your avatar? A beetle?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I guess Dice doesn't like pitching with a lead very much.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Naked Lunch bug typewriter, innit?

    Brilliant movie.

    Exactly. It's Clark-Nova.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Mora has 43 RBI since the ASG? FTH?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Naked Lunch bug typewriter, innit? Brilliant movie.

Oh yes? Hard to imagine that, but I should see it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I like that camera angle that looked out to second base. Shows the second baseman and the runner on second as well as the pitcher.

    ReplyDelete
  43. courtesy of Wikipedia, here's the MLB blackout map - click the image for the large view.

Honestly, MLB, I want to give you money so I can see my team play, why won't you take it??

    ReplyDelete
  44. The business end of that bat ended up in the Red Sox dugout.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Mora was getting a little too comfortable at the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I guess Dice doesn't like pitching with a lead very much.

I have a five-spot on him getting out of it. Of course, with MLBtv delay, he probably already gave up a run...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh yes? Hard to imagine that, but I should see it.

I'm sorry to say I have not read the book. But the movie is more of a sort of a Burroughs mashup. The "story" more describes the writing of the book than the book itself, although there is a memorable monologue straight from the book in which a man is terrorized, then devoured, by his own asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Angels follow up Vlad's HR with three singles, but Hunter is thrown out at the plate, so still just 1-0 LA.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'll rejoin later in the game. Going out for a spot of photography. Close to 60° out now! Crisp!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm sorry to say I have not read the book.

I wonder if someone who really likes Burroughs would like it?

But the movie is more of a sort of a Burroughs mashup. The "story" more describes the writing of the book than the book itself,

I've read that, which is why I never wanted to see it. Plus it's Cronenberg, who I loathe.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm glad I never took that bet, Ofer. :>)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Captain Dong - two nights in a row!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. On the whole Naked Lunch thing:
I love Cronenberg, One of my faves. And I liked the movie more than the book. The book is, well, very Burroughsy. No plot, no cohesiveness, just a series of very visceral, visual, unnerving, sexual (in the dirty, totally physical, no emotion and no eroticism sense), psychotic scenes. It's good.

    ReplyDelete
  54. hey, if banging heidi helps tek bang em outta the park, well... KEEP BANGING!

    ReplyDelete
  55. TED! I thought we'd have to wait till 09 for the next one.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I used to love that book, although I read it a long time ago, not sure if what I'd think now.

I'm quite the minority in Canada with my dislike of Cronenber, as you might imagine. He's a big hero up here.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Plus it's Cronenberg, who I loathe.

If you loathe the great Canadian, then I cannot recommend the movie by any stretch!

    ReplyDelete
  58. hey, if banging heidi helps tek bang em outta the park, well... KEEP BANGING!

if we are going to catch tampa, she might wanna start hitting on some of the other guys too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. If you loathe the great Canadian, then I cannot recommend the movie by any stretch!

    Right. Best avoided, for me.

But this explains why I didn't recognize Ofer's beetle.

    ReplyDelete
  60. But this explains why I didn't recognize Ofer's beetle.

More a cockroach than a beetle, I'd say. And there was another one, the Mujaheedin, which was sort of a scarab, I think. I was looking for a picture of that one, actually, but no luck.

    ReplyDelete
  61. OK, off the phone finally.

Questions: what is this about Tek and Heidi?

What is wrong with Beckett? (I couldn't hear while on phone.)

    Dice-K pissing me off.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Doesn't look very cockroach-y in the avatar.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Questions: what is this about Tek and Heidi?

I knew you'd be asking that soon. I just asked Allan about it, too, since I never hear rumours.

    ReplyDelete
  64. LOL, Laura. Reading my mind again.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Fucking Einstein, Is he going to make an error every single time the Jedi doesn't play?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Beckett had tinging and numbness in 2 fingers.

    ReplyDelete
  67. No one said this, but those are the fingers that bother you when your ulna nerve is compressed, the nerve that runs from your elbow to your hand.

    ReplyDelete
  68. No explanation for why Beckett is getting tingling and numbness? Pinched nerve?

    That's better, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Laura, scary that you answered my question before I asked it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ofer, will a King Crimson fan really dig the Mars Volta? I have been meaning to check out their stuff, but just haven't yet.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Both pitchers threw 40 through 2IP.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ofer, will a King Crimson fan really dig the Mars Volta? I have been meaning to check out their stuff, but just haven't yet.

No idea. I do, but my taste is pretty eclectic. I guess all Crimson fans have eclectic taste, but that can mean a lot of different things (hence, eclectic...).

BTW, I saw Crimson on Saturday night in NY. Amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Amy, ha :)

I don't know if that's why he's having the tingling and numbness, but they said pinky and ring finger, and if you've ever had carpal tunnel or ulna nerve compression, you know those are the fingers that go first.

If you ever hit your "funny bone" really hard, you can sometimes feel the shock up to the tips of those fingers.

    ReplyDelete
  74. James, if you are there, what did you mean by saying DiceK is like Nolan Ryan? In terms of lots of walks? Certainly not in terms of power/speed.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hmm, well, if the tingling is connected to his elbow, that cannot be a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I should say they don't sound alike at all, but I could see how the Mars Volta were influenced by Crimson a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I find no sources on this Tek/Heidi thing, so I am guessing this was started by someone inside JOS.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Well I don't know if it's connected to his elbow.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Anybody remember who was the huggee when the large father hugged into an out? I think it was last year, but it might've been 06.

    ReplyDelete
  80. l-girl do you like AJ Burnett, too?
him and arroyo could be brothers...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Sources? More likely SoSH than JoS.

    ReplyDelete
  82. from boston.com's Extra Bases: Tingling, numbness for Beckett.

Beckett said the numbness remains in his pinky and ring finger, and has been there since Sunday, though it has improved over time. There is "not very much pain at all with it," he said.

Bonus pointer, same source: Tek makes history.

Jason Varitek's second inning homer was his 10th and he's now the first Red Sox catcher to have hit 10 or more homers in 9 seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  83. This thread is funny---Zen and Ofer having one conversation while Laura and I have another. Sort of like going out with another couple where the men have one conversation and the women another. (I usually don't like when that happens.)

    ReplyDelete
  84. Nix, when I first read that, I thought you meant T-Bone Burnett. Now I have to Google Image AJ Burnett and see if I like him. BRB

    ReplyDelete
  85. There are Tek/Heidi rumours in a few places. Two different SoSHers heard about it a week or two ago and one of the sources also said something about the divorce before it was public.

There is also a web forum that a lot of groupies and people who apparently know about these things hang out at that accept it as fact (and note some of Tek's other past adventures).

David Pinto of Baseball Musings also noted the other day that Tek hit on a good friend of his when she was on a date with someone else (this woman apparently looked a lot like Tek's wife).

There are rumours -- not by me, though!

    ReplyDelete
  86. No! I do not. He must be Bronson's younger, less attractive brother.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Nice stat for Tek. Especially given how things have gone this season.

    ReplyDelete
  88. they have that same scowl, though.

REDSOCK, what forums are these grouoies posting in?
i'd love to read some of that trash

    ReplyDelete
  89. i thought the hug was against seattle. all i know for sure is surviving grady had a great picture of it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Ah gee, Allan, you're just breaking my heart. Tek always struck me as the biggest square out there. Tek a player? Live and learn.

    ReplyDelete
  91. (I usually don't like when that happens.)

I hate that. If we go out with people who do that, I rarely want to see them again.

Of course, so many of our couple-friends are same-sex couples that it doesn't come up that often. But the more enlightened men in opposite-sex couples don't do that anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Nixon, no ALL CAPS? You must be on tranquilizers tonight! :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. i have given up in the typing dept.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Does that mean Tek's wife looks like Heidi?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Real cultured guy, that Remy. Always talks about never leaving the hotel room.

    ReplyDelete
  96. The only time I like when that happens is when the man is a bore and the woman is interesting. I am sure it happens the other way also, but then I just find a way to get back into the other half of the group!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Does that mean Tek's wife looks like Heidi?

    No, she does not.
    She is cute, though.

    ReplyDelete
  98. LOL, Nix, Heidi got you back to ALL CAPS!

    ReplyDelete
  99. She is cute, though.

Anybody ever see an ML player's wife that wasn't?

    ReplyDelete
  100. i thought the hug was against seattle. all i know for sure is surviving grady had a great picture of it.

what are you on about? theres a picture of tek hugging heidi?

    ReplyDelete
  101. no, nix, a pix of tiz hugging an infielder who tagged him out.

    ReplyDelete
  102. what are you on about? theres a picture of tek hugging heidi?

I was totally confused by this too! I missed Ofer's q and I had to ask Allan, what hug, what is this, Tek was hugging Heidi?

    ReplyDelete
  103. someone at sosh also posted an answer heidi gave for a nsn chat about tek being very hepful in giving her info about pitchers, etc. she called him her "go to" guy for such things. :>)

    ReplyDelete
  104. This really is a funny, disjointed thread! I was wondering what hug also.

    ReplyDelete
  105. So where is this place that groupies go? Did I miss the answer to Nixon's question?

    ReplyDelete
  106. someone at sosh also posted an answer heidi gave for a nsn chat about tek being very hepful in giving her info about pitchers, etc. she called him her "go to" guy for such things. :>)

    Most non-damning quote ever?

And Daisuke made the mistake of getting to 0-2 on Hernandez. It took him out of his game. Enter 2 Os runs.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I think Allan answered Nix off-thread. It's a SoSH forum, not open to the public (I think).

    ReplyDelete
  108. The Mayor shook hands with Mora's face there.

    ReplyDelete
  109. In the Mayor's mind, he's not slow. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  110. Evening all...just popping in for a bit before dinner tonight. Nice to see a) the team winning and b) another Tek dong. I'm also willing to accept a bollocking for my remarks last night - from now on, I promise to bitch and moan when the team's either losing or tied. :D

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hi Tony, we were wondering where you were after the Sox pulled ahead. :)

    ReplyDelete
  112. I hope I didn't hurt Nixon's feelings by teasing him about his ALL CAPS.

(I now worry that everyone is very sensitive around here.)

    ReplyDelete
  113. ugh, brutal

"red sox strand a pair": DRINK

    ReplyDelete
  114. BTW, I saw Crimson on Saturday night in NY. Amazing.

Aigh! For years it was so easy to see them here in San Francisco. Guess a mini-tour is better than no tour at all, but I miss seeing them now.

As far multi-threading, I thought more or less every thread was like that...but that may be a gender thing, too.

    The Bar awaits.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I bet Nixon went to that secret place that Allan told him about where the cool people get to go.

    ReplyDelete
  116. l-girl, I hate to say it, but I've become a spoiled Red Sox fan.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I bet Nixon went to that secret place that Allan told him about where the cool people get to go.

    Probably!

    ReplyDelete
  118. You haven’t done anything special, Red Sox and Yankees. You’ve spent your way to the top. You’re the Paris Hilton of baseball, successful because you’re rich, a winner only because there’s no plausible way for you to lose.

#4 payroll this year. We're not even #2 anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Has DiceK had one 1-2-3 inning tonight, or even anything close to it?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Shit, I'm on mute and apparently I missed a Yahoo Sports ad. Is Ashley Russell back? I miss the dulcet tones of her voice, sweetly caressing my ear over and over and over and OVER again every fucking inning.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I was just thinking, if the rumour re Varitek/Heidi is true, Heidi is an idiot. That could completely ruin your career. And for what? Not worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Dice:
    Let them ON
    Do not let them IN

    ReplyDelete
  123. Wow, Tony, that link is some serious bullshit, as Phil points out.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Guess Daisuke still has one more base to play with,,,

    ReplyDelete
  125. I was just thinking, if the rumour re Varitek/Heidi is true, Heidi is an idiot. That could completely ruin your career. And for what? Not worth it.

One could say the same for Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Elliot Spitzer, etc., etc. People do dumb things all the time because of ego and hormones.

    ReplyDelete
  126. A DP would be real nice here, guys.

    ReplyDelete
  127. great - and mora is hitting about .425 since the break.

    ReplyDelete
  128. l-girl, that's why I linked to it...it made me laugh and grit my teeth at the same time. I don't need the MSM wagging its finger at me.

phil, the Sox have the #4 payroll now? Wow, I had no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  129. But Amy, I'm talking specifically about a woman trying to advance in broadcasting or in the sports biz or both. A reputation that you sleep with players is not going to help.

I don't buy hormones excuse when it comes to adults.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I wasn't suggesting hormones as an excuse; there is no excuse. And women can be just as stupid as men.

Would any of those men have slept with those women if they knew what it would mean for the reputation and career?

  132. Evening all,
    Settling in for the evening.
    Sox are winning - yea!
Did a little skimming over the thread.
Cool that Tek hit another dong!
Delaying that inevitable trip to the graveyard.
And Ofer - is King Crimson really still performing!? Well, obviously so, you just said so. Duh. Are they still anywhere near the same band? Listened to them a lot way back when, but haven't in quite a while now. How was the show? It's kinda hard to imagine how they would be live.
Also - my 2 cents - I much prefer being with people where everyone is in on the conversation, but there are certainly times when the 2 conversation thing is an absolte necessity.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I do wonder whether DiceK just likes the adrenaline rush of these spots he pitches himself into.

    ReplyDelete
  134. if heidi can get tek's bat going again (heh-heh!), the red sox (who own nesn) will be happy with the arrangement.

  140. so when it comes to payroll and some idiot says "the sox and the yanks are the same" they are 101% full of shite.

  141. Tightrope Matsuzaka does it again.

Do you think the Sox could get a couple of those real-size dolls people use on carpool lanes, and put them on the bases when he pitches? He'd never put on another baserunner.

  142. Amy, I knew you weren't saying it was an excuse.

However, the men you named were all powerful and may have imagined themselves invincible or at least untouchable. They were in power positions.

    Heidi is anything but.

If it's true, that is. Just because an insider says something doesn't make it true.

  147. I think my point is that people get sexually involved with the "wrong" people because they are NOT thinking. I doubt Heidi (if it is true) gave any thought to her career---she was driven by hormones, just like Clinton et al. The fact that those men used their power to get what they wanted makes it more despicable, but it doesn't make Heidi any more stupid than they were.

I don't think we are disagreeing. I think we are both saying these people all engaged in stupid, high risk behavior without thinking of the consequences.

    OH, and GO YOUK!

  148. A little late on this, but Youk is my effing hero.

  151. Amy, yes, absolutely. I didn't think we were disagreeing. :)

I just wouldn't compare a female sports announcer to a US President or state Governor. There's stupid, and there's stupid.
