Burnett Wants 5 Years

A.J. Burnett's agent Darek Braunecker said "there is mutual interest" between his client and the Red Sox.

However, Burnett wants (at least) a five-year deal. Braunecker: "If a team can't do that, they will be behind the 8-ball a little bit." ... I know it's only an opening statement in various negotiations, but come on.

Meanwhile, the Post reports the Yankees are "preparing an $80 million, five-year deal" for Burnett -- on top of the 6/140 offer they have made to CC Sabathia. They will need pitching -- as Mike Mussina has announced his retirement.

Los Angeles Times: "The Boston Red Sox are believed to have made an offer for [Mark] Teixeira ..."

Boston signed 27-year-old outfielder Paul McAnulty to a minor league contract for next year. He could compete for a bench spot.

  1. He really is out of his fucking mind.

Good, I hope the Yankees get him. He can be the Pavano of 2009-2011.

For a basically .500 pitcher, with a career ERA+ of 111, a decent 3rd or 4th starter. But 5 years, come on. Poor WHIP too.

I see no reason at all for the Red Sox to pursue him, with Dice-K, Lester, Beckett, Masterson, Wakefield (possibly Byrd?) other than the fact that IIRC, he is good against MFY.

But yes, definitely in agreement with you - let's get us a Russell Martin/Dioner Navarro-esque catcher first! You know, one with a bat!

I would rather see them pursue Peavy than Burnett.

  2. Also eff the globe again.

Lovely stroll down Varitek memory lane there. Nice contrast to the swill they put up there when Manny was traded.

  3. Am I crazy for thinking the Yankees are dumb for not going after some bats?

Sure they can get some good pitching (if Sabitha's arm doesn't fall off and AJ doesn't fall apart, and...and...and...), but their batting lineup isn't getting any younger.

  4. I like it when an agents closing argument is: Come on. He's bringing back the elementary playground style.

5/80? Give him to the Yankees. Yuk.

I would like another pitcher to keep Masterson in the pen. Randy Johnson for 1 year?

I don't think so. They dropped to middle of the AL pack in RS last year (under 800) and they are all a year older.

  6. Burnett is not all that good. He can get 5 years elsewhere. I'd rather resign Pedro for five years.

Either one of those guys would be in a trade, and the Rays won't trade with us , and the Dodgers would want one of our top pitching prospects.....and esque does not exist for price the Red Sox are willing to pay..
and to say Navarro has a bat at ths time in his career is pushing it a little bit they both are young but have little pop, they have 1980's type SS numbers...

  8. CC must have some serious reservations about playing in NY. How long does it take to think about 140 million dollars.....

He knows A-Rod hated playing for a cellar dweller even after he signed for 252.

140/sub-.500 team may not be as much fun as 90/contender.
