Clean Up

After way too many months of slow computer performance, I am currently scrubbing my hard drive down to absolutely nothing -- wiping away crap and deleted file data "with U.S. Military-strength tools"!

Then I have to re-install everything. So nothing until later on Friday, from work, at the earliest.

  1. Check on all those programs that automatically load when you start windows. Oh, are you even on a windows PC? If not, its a good tip for the rest of us. Those programs will slow you down as much as anything.

There are two other computers in the house, you know...

Oh, are you even on a windows PC?

    Yes.

  4. Cakey, how would ubuntu help? I know what it is, but how would it apply here?

And in other news FJM is done =(

I wonder how many more people will post this? Two so far.

  5. Redsock, what are you using to clean up your computer? Are you simply wiping the hard drive clean and starting fresh?

I know mine needs a good scrub.

And in other news FJM is done =(

    C'est dommage!

  6. Hard drive is clean. Now I have to figure out the proper order of re-installation.

Well geeee I don't know... seems to me if he's wiping the hard drive anyway this would be a GREAT time to try something else. You don't have to use windows or invest money in a Mac. Many of the most annoying aspects of Windows are irrelevant or non-existent on Linux. But you know this.

I've looked 3 times and I still don't see it posted here. I must be retarded sorry.

  8. This does give me a good reason to read FJM from the beginning.

I'll guess I'll never understand this. I use Windows on three different computers (home desktop, laptop and work) and never have one moment of problems or annoyance.

The only problems I ever have are with Firefox, which everyone says is so great. To me, IE runs great, and Firefox is a mess.

    So who knows.

Oh sheesh, I didn't mean it like that, sorry. Someone left it in a comment on a previous thread, is all.

I'm happy with either though I have found FireFox to be more stable. Just my experience...

If there is one drawback, it's that it takes nearly a minute for it to load on my laptop. My father had it installed on his computer as well and it took better than three minutes to load. Of course, IE loads in no time.

  11. I used DriveScrubber (though my first choice was WipeDrive, but the store did not have it). I found out about them only by rooting around online.

The super-duper clean took about 16 hours for a 38 GB hard drive.

I have a feeling all of this will have to wait until Monday morning.

This was part of my problem. Even after a restart with nothing else open, it would take a full minute to open My Documents. Or just as long to minimize one window and bring up another. And in computer time, that is like a week!

Part of the reason why I have not been doing Sox news updates is that it takes so effing long to visit all the websites (and the Globe's site is often a disaster for me anyway). What might take 15-20 minutes at work could take an hour at home.

    I get *very* frustrated.

Plus my relationship to off-season stuff is changing -- which I hope to post about soon.

  13. cakey--it was a cool, rainy night in November (last night) when tim came on here, excited about some Canadian wine bar, but his joy turned to sorrow upon reporting the demise of FJM, with a "Nooooooo!" (It's in the previous post.) This was followed by Laura bravely stating her anti-FJM stance, and it went from there.

But FenFan is talking about Firefox specifically. Your whole computer was fucked up, no matter what you were doing.

  16. It's definitely his computer. Both my computers - laptop and desktop - work fine with the same connection. He also has problems opening Word, opening folders - everything.

Do you think maybe Santa could bring him a new one?

  18. It takes literally 15 minutes for things to start working when I turn my computer on. I'm hoping to buy a mac soon, but it'll have to be longer than I once thought from now.

Boston Globe site is strange because sometimes you have to click a link twice.

I am not paying near enough attention to the hot stove this year as I used to. As for my off-season, it's very nice that the Bruins and Celtics are playing well and playing often. I've talked about that before, but that was before the end of the season. The way the Bruins and Celtics are playing right now, I am almost as entertained each evening as I am in the summer with the Red Sox games. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

But they're different sports. It's hard to compare to baseball.

  19. Wow, Mitch Mitchell was alive. And died.

  20. I think you have corrupted me. My dad wondered why I yelled at the Montreal Canadiens to "eat a bowl of dicks" as the Bruins were beating them 6-1 last night.

Heh. If he needs a new computer, we'll have to get him one, even without Santa. But I'd rather get an elf to fix this one.

Wow, Mitch Mitchell was alive. And died.

If you were keeping up with wmtc, you would have known that sooner. :)

Singer of a band we saw last night also said something about bags/bowls of dicks. I think it was actually a song title. Actually....this would be it.

Nah, no bad. Just didn't want to think our home had missed the passing of Mitch Mitchell. I really liked that band.

It was the most fun I had watching a hockey game in awhile. Well, that and the game against Dallas where there were three or four fights going on at once.

My dad and I were both telling the Canadiens to eat a bowl of dicks.

I've tried... but I just can't game thread hockey.

  26. FJM and FGM were always too similar as acronyms for my taste.

Sorry for the late response... away from the computer this weekend, which was refreshing!

Actually, similar to Redsock, I also find that other programs open more slowly (Outlook, My Computer, etc.) although not in the same vein as what he experienced. Out of curiosity, Redsock, did the sweep make a difference? I'll have to look for those two programs that you suggested.

  28. Reinstalled Windows XP and installed my wireless card, so I am back online. Not sure about any difference yet.

No to both of them dead weight on your roster , just get the draft picks, seems as though Theo does pretty well with draft picks....would anybody be upset if we got a bucket of balls for Lugo..Last thing we need trying to win a world series is a reclamation project...
