Herald: Sox Make Offer To Teixeira (8 Years?)

Michael Silverman reports that the Red Sox
have made an offer [for Mark Teixeira], the biggest and longest yet for this current ownership group. The offer is believed to be for at least eight years ...

Teixeira is believed to be seeking an average annual value of more than the $21 million that left-hander CC Sabathia is close to finalizing with the New York Yankees for the next seven years, and a lot closer to the $27.5 million that third baseman Alex Rodriguez is guaranteed to make through 2017 with the Yankees. ...

There is every indication that the Red Sox view Teixiera in the same "must-have" light as they did Matsuzaka.
MLB's Ian Browne notes the sticky situation that would arise with only two infield positions for Teixeira, Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis.

  1. See? I post about how dull it is and boom -- we get some probable movement on Teixeira!

  2. Is it out of the question to move Youk to LF and deal Bay.....

  3. Does anyone think the Rangers would be interested in Lowell and a pitcher for Teagarden or Salty (and maybe a prospect)?

If the Sox can get Teixeira it would seem the best move would be trade Lowell and move Youk to 3rd instead of putting Youk in the OF...I heard a rumor that the Rangers want a 3rd baseman so they can DH Blalock, so they might be willing to take Lowell...

  4. Yes. Why in the hell would you want to move Bay, anyway? I'd much rather have Bay than Lowell.

I wouldn't put it past Theo for that to be a possible scenario. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see Youk play shortstop.

WEEI was talking today about conspiracy theories of a Varitek deal for 3 years being part of the Teixeira deal. This hot stove season has been reall cold.

  6. I don't want him. I want a catcher, a bench, and a fifth starter. That's all.

Why in the hell would you want to move Lowell?

If they are going to sign Bay long term than they should if they are going to wait on Holliday then they won't sign Bay , get something for him now, i would assume his value is higher than Lowell....

  8. I'd want to move Lowell because a) I don't think he's a great bet to ever hit all that well again, certainly not at Bay's level b) I don't think Lowell's glove at third is that much of an upgrade at 3rd over Youk's and c) Youk @ 3rd and Bay @ LF is better both offensively and defensively than Lowell @ 3rd and Youk @ LF.

  9. lowell is gonna bench it out this year and ask for a trade or to be let go next year.

  10. No way would Youk go to LF, 9casey. His place is at first or third. If Mikey Lowell HAS to be dealt, it would be the best for the club. But that would only happen if the Sox land Texeira. They sure are going to try! Forget about the Yankees...no way they will spend that kind of money after CC and AJ. But they might go after Manny in their own demented way.
It's nice to be back here again! Teixeira wants to make his decision by XMAS. There's only one winning team east coast choice...the Sox. From Boston.

  11. Woo woo!
Just back from a long weekend in the mountains to visit Cat's aunt & uncle.
And lo & behold, the Sox are chasing Tex. I didn't really think they were too serious about him. I'm not sure I like this deal, not for that much money. Maybe he'll prove to be worth it, but it seems like a pretty big maybe to me. Is he really capable of Manny-esque numbers? I wouldn't want to spend that kind of money unless I felt like that was what I was getting.
If it happens, though, Lowell has to go, maybe get a little better bench-man than we have now. Of course, Lowell would be a great assett on the bench, but he'd be miserable.

  12. The big question is where could Lowell go? Who might want a third baseman who doesn't already have one, and who is relatively close to contention?

Twins, White Sox, Athletics, Cardinals, Phillies, maybe the Giant?

If I was Manny, given the market, I would take it!

  15. I have been seeing a lot of comments on other blogs and news sites toying with the idea of Youk in the outfield. I just don't see that being viable. He's just too invaluable as an infielder and he's already moved back and forth across the infield. Why continue to muck with what position he holds?

I do agree that there are probably a lot of teams that have a need for a player with Lowell's talents; in my mind the Sox will wait until the season begins, see how far he's come and then look for a trade that will benefit both parties.

I would hate to see him go - he's a class act - but I hated seeing Nomar and Manny leave, too. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do...

  16. I have to say what no one else will. Ortiz is no longer the Papi of old. I honestly don't think he'll ever be that Papi again, either. Bay in LF, Youk at 3rd, and Teixiera at 1st are the core. Lowell and Ortiz are fighting for DH.

  17. If the sox ink Tex, I have a little sympathy for the Blue Jays. They could've made the playoffs in almost any other division last year (arguably), and they will have no chance next year.

No longer will they be the popular dark horse choice.

And I think Ortiz still has it. He got 23HR and 89 RBIs last year in 109 games.

  18. 2008 OPS+
    Ortiz - 123
    Pedroia - 122

123 is a significant drop. His previous Sox years:

    144
    145
    158
    161
    171

  20. Looking at Tiz's stats, did you know he's 5-for-6 in steals since joining the Red Sox? ... And 10-for-13 in his career!

Tito should give him the green light more often!

  21. Ortiz had a down year. Happens to everyone. Happened to Manny in 07. He did pretty well this year.

  22. 2 Things:

    1) I want Teixeira.

    2) If Manny ends up wearing pinstripes, I WILL BE SICK.

  23. Hey redsock and L

Just wanted to say congrats on the CBA wins! I see there was quite the sore loser in that thread back there.

Would've commented earlier but I've been without internet until now - I'm in Florida for my annual Christmas vacation in the sun.

I also read that ish's power was out for like 5 or 6 days - goddamn man, sounds like an adventure - glad to hear everything is OK (i hope!).

  24. Is he really capable of Manny-esque numbers?

Not quite, but he's a hell of a better defender -- and I say that without being part of the "Manny = Worst OF'er Evar!" camp.

And $20m isn't what it was when Manny signed.

  25. yeah, add me to the list of belated congrats to both of you(s).

that duane guy, LOL BOO HOO.

Around here, if no one is saying it, it's because no one thinks it.

Ortiz is no longer the Papi of old. I honestly don't think he'll ever be that Papi again, either.

The man had an off year. That's all we know so far.
