Teixeira Announcement Expected Today

Washington Times:
A major league baseball source has told The Washington Times' Thom Loverro that there will be an announcement today regarding the future of free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.

While the source declined to discuss specifics, there are strong indications that the Red Sox will announce that they have landed the highly-coveted slugger ...

It is still unclear how much the Red Sox offered Teixeira, but there were reports last night that the Nationals had boosted their bid in a last-ditch effort to sign him.

MASN's Roch Kubatko reported last night that Nationals might have upgraded their offer to the first baseman to an eight-year deal worth between $178 and $184 million.
This report has been picked up by the Globe, ProJo and WEEI.

ESPN's Peter Gammons and Buster Olney, stated earlier today that a Teixeira decision is "seemingly imminent".

  1. I'm still a little suspicious. Remember when we "all but had traded for" Johan?

    Still, this is exciting.

    Ellsbury
    Pedroia
    Texiera
    Ortiz
    Youkilis
    Bay
    Drew
    Lowrie
    ...Russel Martin?

Meanwhile, Collin Balester (I know, who?) 22-year old pitcher for the Nationals:

"If that happens it's going to be a dream come true. That guy is a great player and if he comes to the nation's capitol, watch out, we're going to the World Series and we are winning it all. I'm calling it right now. We're playing four games in the World Series, sweep, see ya!""

  2. Balester's obviously participating in the Annual Jimmy Rollins "You'll Look Good in Case It Somehow Comes True" sweepstakes.

  3. Looks like:

    Red Sox - 8/170
    vs.
    Nationals - 9/180

    But wait!
"... at least one acquaintance of Teixeira said that, while the first baseman prefers to make a decision by Christmas, he wouldn't be shocked if the 28-year-old allowed the process to continue into the early weeks of January if he and agent Scott Boras believed that it would lead to a better deal."

Yeah, just like the Cardinals and Rockies!

  5. Jon Heyman, Boras's Stenographer:
"The Yankees have made contact as well, and are seriously talking with Teixeira's people. The two-time Gold Glove winner appears to seriously considering signing with New York."

So the MFY go from not being involved at all (no offer made) to suddenly being a spot that Teix is seriously considering?

Puh-leese. Luckily, JWH will not fall for this lame attempt to get the Red Sox to up their offer.

  6. Will we think the ownership is stupid and ineffective if the yankees do sign tashara and all those other guys.

No. The Sox can't force him to do anything. But I am also fine with the team sticking to its guns.

Teix is a serious upgrade over Lowell, but we'll manage without him, if necessary. Naturally, I'd rather he goes to DC than NY if he declines the Sox.

180 million can be spend on a lot of other nice things.

  8. SI says it's the MFYs. I wish the MFYs didn't have so much more luxury tax room this year because of the new stadium financing.

Looks like we'll know soon one way or another.

  9. Edes is saying that it is a done deal.

And that this means that the MFY will have the four highest, highest meaning for the length of the contract, paid players in the game.

Time to get ourselves a catcher and another pitcher and move on.
