Shortstop Competition

So Julio Lugo and Jed Lowrie are battling for the starting shortstop job, right?

No, says the Herald's Sean McAdam. He says there is only "the appearance of competition" and that Lugo will be the Red Sox's starting shortstop on Opening Day.
There's no drama here. Unless Lugo gets hurt again or has the most horrific spring of the 60 or so players in camp, he - and not Lowrie - will be the team's starting shortstop when the season opens April 6.
Terry Francona says that while Lowrie will see time at third base -- in case Mike Lowell is not ready to begin the season -- Lugo will not. Tito:
I just think that's going about it wrong. In fairness to him and to Jed, we don't need to start moving guys around. This is a big spring for Julio. He feels like he has a lot to prove and he missed some time. I think the best way to go about it is to let him be a shortstop.
(Lugo has a lot to prove this year, for sure. And with all of this speculation comes the usual caveat that nothing anyone says in mid-February -- though no one in an official position is actually saying much of anything -- can be taken as the way things will be in April.)

  1. Jesus Christ that sucks. Unless Theo knows something about Lugo that I don't, that's an awful decision.

  2. No need to put Lugo at 3rd, since even without Lowell, 3rd can be covered by Jed and Youk.

    1st: Youk (Wilkerson/etc.)
    2nd: Pedroia (Lugo)
    SS: Jed (Lugo)
    3rd: Lowell (Jed/Youk)

Supposedly Lugo's put on weight. If he doesn't suck, he's welcome to compete for the starting SS gig.

  3. Doesn't seem surprising that, at this point, Lugo would get the SS nod, but I can already hear the braying.

Whatever. I want to hear, "Play Ball!"

  4. Just think, If things had worked out for you guys You would have had your SS set for the past 5 years and the next 9 years in the name of your idol Alex Rodriguez.

  5. Ehhh, I'm inclined to think that there definitely will be a competition. Same as with Varitek, I'm welcome to the idea of Lugo as starting SS if he proves me wrong and hits .573 with 97 HR and 234 RBI and 215 BB and amazing play in the field.

  6. Second non-sequitur musical comment of the season...

Last week I downloaded the new Propagandhi album that comes out March 10 (shhh)...and wow, simply amazing. Musically and lyrically. Geniuses!

  7. Who is this Nutball character? I clicked on his/her profile, and under favorite movies it lists "It Is A Wonderful Life." That is making me laugh very hard, for some reason.

  8. Re: Jeter: Some say he is not that good of a Shortstop anymore and in fact he may be hurting the Yankees by staying there. Also some say his bat is not nearly effective as it once was. There are even some who say he is and has always been overrated,
Myself, I say he is not overrated and never has been, I always would have taken Jeter over Nomar or the "Baseball player formally known as A-Rod".

Some kind of nutball MFY fan, apparently, and one disillusioned with A-Rod.

  9. Mark my words A-Rod will be our DH in 5 years.

  10. I was distracted by the biggest distraction so far this year. I forgot this was all about Lugo. Fuck Lugo. I don't care what he does. He has been dead to me for a long time now. Even if he has an awesome April he will just collapse and suck worse then ever. Do I need to remind you about that anti-Dimaggio streak?

  11. I wish he would have an anti-Ripken career.

  12. Excuse me, why is Nutball Gazette here? Has the troll policy changed and no one informed me??? Hmmmm???

  13. These stories have me less worried about what the Red Sox are planning for Lugo and more worried about what this may suggest about Lowrie. He may not have too much more room to grow, and management may see it.

This seems like the extreme inversion of the Nomar/John Valentin spring of 97 (was it 97?)

    It is to laugh.

  15. Judging from what's on Youtube, Propaghandi isn't anything special. Maybe I'm missing something.

Mark my words A-Rod will be our DH in 5 years.

He's signed with the MFYs through 2017, and he's got no-trade protection. And how many 38- or 39-year-old DHs do the Red Sox tend to sign anyway?

  16. tim--I'm going to see 50-ft Wave in Boston and I noticed Propagandhi on the calendar for like the next day. I was psyched to see they're still around. I didn't realize they were. I loved that first Fat Wreck Chords comp they were on back in '94 and I became a fan from that.

  18. If Jed is not the SS he will be the 3B for sure. Lowell cannot make it through a whole season with that hip.

  19. Depends what kind of Propagandhi you saw on youtube - the live videos are mostly piss-poor quality from what i recall...the lyrics are just mind-blowingly great. But the way its sung its one of those bands where you need the liner notes to really comprehend/appreciate it.

Musically they've come a long way since their first couple albums....but 'how to clean everything' is still awesome.

damn you jere for being near a propagandhi show! their canadian 'tour' for this new album consists of two shows in winnipeg!

They're around but only release an album every 5 years, and tour at about that rate as well. I think they just sit around and read books.

But ever since they swapped bass players, their music's taken on a totally different, awesomer tone.

    /end rant.
