Lester Efficient; Penny Pushed Back; Drew Gets Injection, Hopes to Play Friday

Jon Lester needed only 20 pitches to throw two hitless innings, with two strikeouts. Hideki Okajima pitched a scoreless third and Junichi Tazawa made his first appearance against big league hitters -- he retired all three he faced.

Boston lost the game to Cincinnati 9-8. Jed Lowrie had a couple of hits, as did Paul McAnulty (who also drove in four).

Brad Penny will not start against Puerto Rico's WBC team on Thursday, as scheduled. After throwing 25 pitches in a BP session on Sunday, he felt fatigue in his shoulder. ... J.D. Drew hopes to play on Friday, even as he was sent north to Boston for an injection in the facet joint in his lower back.

WBC Tuesday Exhibitions: Canada beat the Blue Jays 6-4, the US edged the Yankees 6-5, and the DR topped the Marlins 10-1. Recaps and boxes here.

Also: Manny Ramirez has resigned with the Dodgers, accepting the 2/45 deal Los Angeles offered last Wednesday.

  1. Ramon Ramirez was roughed up. I hope that's just a bump in the road of spring training.

  4. Anyone else notice that in the US vs. Toronto game Clement pitched 3 scoreless innings with no hits?

  5. Drew worries me. I think he will spend a fair amount of time on the DL this year. But if he can give us a whole month like he did last year boy I tell ya.
