G5: Red Sox 5, Angels 4

Red Sox - 000 020 201 - 5 8 0
Angels - 101 010 001 - 4 8 0
Whew. Los Angeles had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Howie Kendrick battled Jonathan Papelbon through a 10-pitch at-bat. Kendrick took two strikes, then fouled off seven straight pitches -- Bot was using both his fastball and slider -- before lining out to Rocco Baldelli in right center field.

Jason Bay hit two home runs, scored three runs and drive in three runs. Mike Lowell hit a two-dong in the fifth.

Bay's first home run gave Boston its first lead of the afternoon, 4-3, lead in the top of the seventh. After the stretch, Terry Francona brought in Ramon Ramirez in relief of Penny (6-5-3-2-2, 86). Ramirez allowed a one-out double, but worked out of trouble. He threw 17 pitches, but Tito sent him back out for the eighth and after he got Kendrick and Bobby Abreu (on a liner that Kevin Youkilis dove for and deflected to Dustin Pedroia, who tossed it to Ramirez at the bag for the 3-4-1 out), it was Bot time.

That's the work of Playoff Assassin Tito! After three losses, the team just grabbed a one-run lead; it's time go with your best and don't eff around. Pitch counts: Ramirez 29 / Bot 39.

Brad Penny (2008: 6.27, 68 ERA+; Spring 2009: 12 IP, 3.75) / Joe Saunders (0.00, ∞ ERA+)

Penny will be limited to 85-90 pitches. ... Saunders pitched well -- 6.2-3-0-2-2, 93 -- against Oakland on Tuesday. LA won the season-opener 3-0.

Kevin Youkilis has had at least two hits in all four games:
This is 1/40th of the season. We're going to hit a spell and why not be now? There are bright things to come. We're not worried about it. I know a lot of people back home might be worried about it, [the media] might be worried about it. We're going to hit.
I'm not worried -- no one in his or her right mind should be worried after four games -- but I am annoyed.

  2. I will take some big park shots today as I am in the upper deck with a party. If Penny sucks today I will personally hunt him down and kick him in the shin with his hiked up socks.

    ReplyDelete
  3. He looks pretty large in girth too.

    ReplyDelete
  4. How about get some hits when I am watching in person you fucks.

  5. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
    Dustin Pedroia, 2B
    David Ortiz, DH
    Kevin Youkilis,1B
    Rocco Baldelli, RF
    Jason Bay, LF
    Mike Lowell, 3B
    Jed Lowrie, SS
    Jason Varitek, C

Globe says Tito says when Baldelli replaces Ellsbury (as he will likely do next week when the Sox face 3 Oakland LHP), he will bat lead off to not disrupt the flow of the lineup.

Tito also says he likes the way LBJ is swinging the bat. WTF'nF?

  6. I assume it's obvious, but Andy will upload pics from the game to that URL listed above (here).

  7. Also, Kilgore is doing a brief morning wrap-up of the minor leagues games at EB. From last night:

    PAWTUCKET 9, Buffalo 0
Michael Bowden goes 4 2/3 innings in his first start, striking out five while allowing no runs on two hits and two walks. ...

    PORTLAND 3, Connecticut 2
Lars Anderson draws a bases loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Sea Dogs their first win of the year. Anderson also hits two singles. Batting leadoff, Josh Reddick goes 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, an RBI, and a run. ...

  8. I like how Kilgore says he hopes it becomes a regular feature--considering his live chats from spring games lasted one day, I give him two weeks on this one.

I now have pics up from Wednesday and Thursday. I'm not gonna pimp these here every time I go to a game, but just know if I'm not in a game thread, it probably means I was at that game, and pics of it will be on my blog.

  9. There was no way the Angels would have let themselves lose last night, and I wouldn't be surprised to get swept. It's annoying, but they're going to play like it's the 7th game of the world series for the next month or so.

I've only been able to watch two of the games so far this season, and even those have been incomplete. I'm looking forward to seeing this one in full.

And then David Holtzman's Diary or the Chelsea Girls on the big screen(s).

If I'm not in a game thread, it probably means I'm somewhere else.

  11. Annoying is right. I'd rather talk glowingly about my team than bitch.

Still, looking on the bright side, I'm pleased with our whole line up, except Ortiz and Lowrie, Beckett, Ram Ram, and Pap.

    *takes a deep breath*

    ReplyDelete
  12. I like the look of these compared to the 80s ones already. From the front anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Now that's a-way to start a game!

    ReplyDelete
  14. very nice job jacobo...and before I can finish that he steals second

    ReplyDelete
  15. i've noticed the weather isn't the same here as it is there

    ReplyDelete
  16. goddamn it. and bad rundown style too

    ReplyDelete
  17. oh my god Papi stopped halfway to first on that

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jon Garland is batting 7th for the Angels? ANyone else see that?

    ReplyDelete
  19. that's all Pedroia had to do, ground to right side

    ReplyDelete
  20. way to get out of the mess. which you created by walking the gd leadoff hitter

    ReplyDelete
  21. what a dumb commercial. "the biggest fans are the ones who dance the most"

    ReplyDelete
  22. At least we do leadoff walks too.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Baldelli's free swinging but it actually works.

    ReplyDelete
  24. this inning we must score. a minimum of 10 times. or once.

    ReplyDelete
  25. pissed i have work, but am trying to check in often

    ReplyDelete
  26. Eventually Fox will mention the fact that we're wearing new road unis for the first time in like 20 years, right?

    ReplyDelete
  27. if we're gonna be a team of HR hitters who don't know how to move runners over, can we at least actually hit some HRs???

    ReplyDelete
  28. Someone should remind Budweiser that baseball pre-dates 1876.

    ReplyDelete
  29. in these type games, instead of dwelling on how we're missing opportunities, I try to think of what the other side's thinking, which is, We're living dangerously, eventually they're gonna break through.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This moment of silence for a pitcher killed by a drunk driver is brought to you by, Budweiser. Smooth, crisp taste.

  31. This moment of silence for a pitcher killed by a drunk driver is brought to you by, Budweiser. Smooth, crisp taste.

Always loved the old tagline for Schlitz:

"It's the one beer to have when you're having more than one."

Not likely to see that one revived.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This moment of silence for a pitcher killed by a drunk driver is brought to you by, Budweiser.

If he'd been drinking Budweiser, he'd still be sober and pissing in the bathroom.

    ReplyDelete
  33. We are not finishing our offensive opportunities right now, I have to figure that will come around at some time. It's going to be a long season if it does not.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't see there being a "long season" for the Red Sox for a long, long time, barring catastrophic injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 26 pitches through two. Could be worse.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'd be more worried if we were losing these games to the Orioles, but it's still annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Penny gives me the feeling he knows what he's doing, unlike a lot of other fifth starters we've seen. But, that's only through a couple innings.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Both pitchers have a 26-14 pitch count.

    ReplyDelete
  39. How about this for a Jed nickname? The Lowrie Ballroom.

Of course, when he's bad, he's a Lowrie Bum.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "I look for Varitek to have a solid season offensively... he has too much pride... as competitive as he is, I don't think there's any doubt he's going to prove some people."

    WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  41. media cliche twaddle bullshit

pride can't make you hit better or mainatin fastball veloccity or make you run like you were 25 when you're actually 45.

    it just can't.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Back to inconsistent and shitty swings for Ellsbury.

    ReplyDelete
  43. this space was left blank intentionally

    ReplyDelete
  44. Getting...just a little frustrated here.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why does Fox keep doing live score updates for completed games?

    ReplyDelete
  46. what was that delay? blister? cut?

    ReplyDelete
  47. At least Vlad's decline is keeping pace with Papi's.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Papi's not declining.

    What delay?

    ReplyDelete
  49. tek came out and penny was staring at his right index finger. i thought it might be bleeding. ump was out to look too. not a delay, i suppose. but i'm not using audio.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wait, so Fox isn't gonna have a studio this year?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I didn't think it was anything but maybe I missed something. Big Sprint ad over the screen during a pitch there.

    ReplyDelete
  52. he wasn't declining through 2007 --that's for fuckin' sure -- and he was hurt last year. jury is still out for me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. GOD I'm so tired of watching Papi strike out!

    ReplyDelete
  54. if manny had done that, there'd be headlines for days about how inept he is, but sometimes he gets away with it.

(also on the one replay i saw, looks like it scraped the wall to me)

    ReplyDelete
  55. i was gonna say the same thing--he WOULD have caught it and would've been accused of trying to catch a butterfly and accidentally ending up with the ball. Then he would've hit four home runs. And we'd go on to win the WS. Twice.

    ReplyDelete
  56. smooth dp!

i'd feel better about bay's fielding if he could do a double fingerpoint after some of his catches.

    ReplyDelete
  57. our innings, since game 1:

    0010000100000010110010000200000

    ReplyDelete
  58. ME SAY BOOM BOOM BOOM

    ReplyDelete
  59. Bay's sleeve Sox are horribly placed! Like they just kicked.

    ReplyDelete
  60. "If A-Rod is watching today, he has to be a little encouraged."

    Good to know.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Don't famous people/organizations know they don't need goddamn twitter?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Napoli kills the Sox for some reason..

    ReplyDelete
  63. mofo needs to taste some dirt next time up.

    ReplyDelete
  64. We had a cold start like this last year too, didn't we?

    ReplyDelete
  65. 78 for penny. one more inning?

    ReplyDelete
  66. We were 3-1 after 4 gamers, but hung around .500 for a bit, then went up to 15-7.

    ReplyDelete
  67. If Jason Lane gets called up by the Jays we may see this matchup this year.

    ReplyDelete
  68. does anyone know who the starting SS is going to be when Lugo comes back. Has Tito said anything?

    ReplyDelete
  69. i'm assuming lugo, though maybe it'll be a little of both for awhile. jed will also play some third to give lowell a break.

    ReplyDelete
  70. So the Jays are 5-1?!?

    Start printin' those playoff tix!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. yeah it's gotta be lugo so Jed can move around. that's what they were saying last night.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Know what's weird? When you move to a new city, and a local newscaster there used to be in your old city when you were there.

    ReplyDelete
  73. that's 86 for penny (54 strikes)

    6-5-3-2-2

    ReplyDelete
  74. huh. the fox reporters are wearing little 34 buttons, too.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Thunder Bay. It's the crooked socks.

    ReplyDelete
  76. they didn't make him taste dirt

    ReplyDelete
  77. don't start Karros. We dealt with the bullshit aura for all these years-this is a new stadium with no "ghosts" or any of that shit. Any team can build the exact same stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Pedroia was this shitty this time last year.

    ReplyDelete
  79. thought that was headed for dongtown

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm probably ungrateful, but I can't remember Coco doing anything this useful.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Playoff Assassin Tito, bringing the Bot!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Coco did save games with his glove.

    Co Co Ram Ram

    ReplyDelete
  83. Still! Fox still using that little spot which shows Nomar in the freakin '02 BP jersey...

    ReplyDelete
  84. Why did Albert say "Juan Rivera"?? Who earlier was replaced in the lineup by "Jon Garland P"?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Bot don't fail us now..

    ReplyDelete
  86. you don't spike the net, Bud Light Lime, you spike the ball. Inconsistent!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Paps threw two pitches. How many is that worth with the warmup pitches?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Insurance Anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  89. .056 average for Lowrie this year.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Gotta love the Doungage from Mr. Homre himself.

Jonathon, can you be a good lad and fetch me some dirty water?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Bleh. Good thing we got that one from Bay.

    ReplyDelete
  92. that's why you waste a pitch

    ReplyDelete
  93. even MORE of a meatball on 0-2!!! what the hell are you doing???

    ReplyDelete
  94. I see the unintentional intentional walk here.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I see the unintentional intentional walk here.

    Seems that way.

    ReplyDelete
  96. So Saito will close tomorrow if they need him?

    ReplyDelete
  97. stop effing around you stupid redneck and get a fucking out!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. 2 changes, then the heat.

    ReplyDelete
  99. We may have to pull him here soon..

    ReplyDelete
  100. Whew.. do we have to rest Pap for 2 days now though?

    ReplyDelete
  101. that ball almost came out. but, WIN.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Cool,
got home just in time to pull p JoS and see this -
    WATER

    ReplyDelete
  103. Whoa, sorry I had to miss this one. But it sounds like a great day for Canada. And the Sox.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wonderful game. We are behind home plate for Sunday's game. 4 rows back in Rod Carew's seats. Pictures will be awesome tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yanks win 6-1. The Royals have scored one run in four of the five games they've played.

    O's beat Rays again.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Sorry, that's wrong--they've scored three 2s and two 1s in their five games.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Cnat wait til the MFY play some real opponents

    ReplyDelete
  108. I didn't see anyone warming in the pen during papelbon's drama.

    ReplyDelete
