Josh Beckett (3.77, 125 ERA+) / J.A. Happ (2.98, 145 ERA+)

wmtc4 was a huge success, I slept in till 11:30, there is afternoon baseball, the Red Sox are 3 GA in the East and the weather will remain gorgeous for many evening hours of patio relaxation. Perfect.

Since the end of April, Beckett has a 1.70 ERA in seven straight quality starts; in the one game he was tagged with a loss, he allowed one unearned run in eight innings. Over his last four starts, his ERA is a paltry 0.31, with opposing batters hitting [sic] .115/.198/.167.

Happ started the year in the bullpen, but his last four appearances have been starts (log). In those starts: 23.2 innings, 17 hits, 9 walks, 17 strikeouts, 4 home runs allowed, .205/.298/.410.

Jacoby Ellsbury, hitting in the #2 spot last night, homered, singled, walked three times, and stole a base. He's hitting .367/.472/.500 in June. ... A Julio Lugo impersonator went 4-for-5 last night, with two doubles.

Brad Penny, on Joe Girardi's comment that Penny hit Alex Rodriguez intentionally on Thursday night:
I don't care what he thinks. ... We don't go back and say they hit us intentionally. We've got games to worry about ... He needs to worry about managing ... I think he's just frustrated that we have a good team and a good lineup. ... And they called the commissioner's office. Come on.

Hope I didn't hurt Mark's feelings!

  2. It's quiet here! Headed out for various events; will be following the action on the blackberry. No Drew, Pedroia, Ortiz or Varitek, eh? Should be an interesting game.

  3. I'm going to have to get used to Castig saying Happ. Sounds a lot like Pap!

  4. I'm here too, although taking it easy. SO nice to be home today!

  5. BUNT! Ellsbury ran so fast he had to jump over Utley!

  6. Ellsbury puts nitrous oxide in his cheerios each morning.

  7. Wow! They had Ellsbury picked off but the throw to second went into the outfield and LBJ goes to third!

  8. My Boy working his away around the bases... :)

  9. Psst: Ellsbury might have beaten the throw to second.

  10. SHOW THE GAME.

Don't show replays, don't show ads and come back when the ball is over the dirt in front of home plate. COME BACK BEFORE THE PITCH!

  11. MFYs got runners at the corners with 2 out in the 2nd... Scoreless.

  12. Cervelli dunks a looper into right field, scoring Douche Canoe and it's 1-0

  13. you see the frod/bruney back and forth?

bruney said frod's actions are embarrassing and high-schoolish -- frod says he might pay attention to bruney if bruney was a decent pitcher.

  14. Jeter singles to left, Shemp scores it's 2-0.

  15. Ish, is your NESN feed hiccupping and stuttering all the time? I am wondering if it's a NESN issue or a Rogers Cable issue. It's SO annoying!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I read that exchange. K-Rod might want to shut up because Bruney's gonna go all Nazi fucker on his ass.

    ReplyDelete
  17. OK, right now, anyone's NESN fucking up?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Rocco taking over the Laser Show

    ReplyDelete
  19. My NESN is still not fucking up. Surprisingly.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Although I think Dave Roberts said something negative last inning, so it might be defective.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So I guess that means it's a Rogers problem. It's AWFUL. Sometimes it's every few seconds.

OMG NICK GREEN I'M SORRY I DOUBTED YOU

    ReplyDelete
  26. Whoa, Beckett gave that a ride.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh right. I'm not up on the celebrity death gossip.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Secret Weapon's a roll lately, eh. Too bad. If he keeps hitting like this, we may have to keep him.

  29. Dave Roberts prefers plywood runs.

  30. don mentioning pitch counts and the rangers/nolan ryan idea to have pitchers in their org go longer.

no one has mentioned what will happen when texas trades for a pitcher who has not been used to that workload. how can that work?

    it's destined to fail.

  31. Hi everyone. Glad to hear WMTC4 went well. I can't hang out too long, but wanted to say hi. YAY! We are already ahead and hitting the hell out of the ball.

Now we need Beckett just to be Beckett for the rest of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks Amy. :)

This whole idea of "pitchers today are babied, too much attn to pitch counts" strikes me as ridiculous. They always use Ryan as an example, even while admitting he was a freak, in a class by himself.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've always said and thought it'd about the pitching and the pitchers rather than the pitch counts. If you want your pitcher to go deep, he needs to improve control and pitch selection and not to nibble nibble nibble. And yes, you can stick to the strike zone and not get lit up. Ask Maddux and Glavine.

Hell, even ask Gabbard that one day he threw a CG.

  34. I really love how many games Baldelli has been able to play this year.

  35. Green says: "Make Laura apolgize!"

    ReplyDelete
  36. damn, thought happ was gonna grab it

    ReplyDelete
  37. Usually striking out by inches refers to the strike zone. Not the foul line!

    ReplyDelete
  38. so lugo hits after rotting on the bench for 7-8 days? strategy for tito.

  39. 7 LOB in 3 innings.

    ReplyDelete
  56. mr bard, you just walked a pitcher on four pitches. hang your head in shame.

    ReplyDelete
  57. So is the plan just to tank this one and cripple them in case we face them in the WS?

    ReplyDelete

  59. Stepped out to pick my mother up from the ER.

Ironic that last night's game ended up 11-6 and right now this one is 11-6 the other way.

What isn't ironic, but instead downright frustrating, is not getting adequate care at the ER. She left there worse than she went in with dehydration and a migraine, etc., so now making some calls to find her primary care doctor and/or a neurologist at another hospital.

    Seriously pissed about it.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ish, why was your mom in the Emergency Room? Is she ok?

    ReplyDelete
  61. heading for some clean water any minute now

    ReplyDelete
  62. green determined to show laura is wrong about him.

    ReplyDelete
  63. L, migraine, nausea, dehydration - it's been going on for a few days, the latter two anyways. She's headed to a different hospital now. Chances are they'll actually give her adequate care.
