Off-Day Outtakes: Dictators & Sonic Youth

The Dictators
Demos & Rare Tracks 1973-1976

Miami Steve Van Zandt calls the Dictators "the connective tissue between the eras of The MC5, Stooges, New York Dolls, and the punk explosion of the mid to late 1970's".

Also check out Daytrotter:
Daytrotter is a recording studio with a website. We invite musicians to our studio, record their songs, and give (give, as in "for free, no strings attached") them to you, from our website. Simple.
I will confess to having heard of maybe 1.7% of the bands listed on the sessions archives, so feel free to recommend one or four.

  2. Yeah Dictators! We all know Sonic Youth was great and influential, but the Dictators are so often forgotten. Nice choices, thanks.

  3. The album "NY, NY" comes from is "... And You?" and is credited to Manitoba's Wild Kingdom. A short (10 songs in 26 minutes!), fun blast of punky rock and an overlooked gem from 1990.

  4. Stupid Tribe doesn't know you're supposed to have your hittin' pants on in the 1st against Jobber. He's retired the first 8.

Orel just went on and on about how watching this game is like watching a no-hitter in that every ball hit is important, as the Yanks are going for the consecutive errorless games streak. Was dead serious, saying how nobody wants to be the one to end the streak.

Then Philips asks the third guy (almost as if he didn't hear a word of what Orel said), "do you think any of the players care there's a streak?" and the other guy said "half of them probably don't even know about it." Orel had to feel like an ass--then they asked him if it mattered (again, he just went on about how much it does--maybe they were so shocked they thought they dreamed it) and he said, "if you're on the New York Yankees it matters."
