G117: Rangers 4, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 010 100 100 - 3 8 0
Rangers - 012 001 00x - 4 11 1
Facing C.J. Wilson in the eighth inning, Mike Lowell lined a one-out single to left and Casey Kotchman walked.

Nick Green pinch-ran for Lowell. First and second and one out seemed like a decent chance to score a run, but the Red Sox had Brian Anderson and Alex Gonzalez coming up. ... Both hitters [sic] looked at strike three.

Junichi Tazawa (4.05, 116 ERA+) / Dustin Nippert (3.62, 124 ERA+)

With his win against the Tigers in his last start, Tazawa became the youngest Japanese-born pitcher to win his first career major league start (23 years, 66 days old). Daniel Paulling, mlb.com:
Including Saturday, the Red Sox have made seven roster moves in the last 11 days and 10 over the last 16. They have used 46 different players so far, just one shy of their mark (47) from last season. The Red Sox have used 22 pitchers this year, also just one behind the 23 the number they used last season.
Clay Buchholz explains his baserunning adventure. ... Tim Wakefield threw 3.2 innings (63 pitches) for Pawtucket yesterday. He allowed three hits, two runs and one walk, and struck out three.

  2. Ugh, Lowell should not be hitting after Ortiz.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Must ... Go ... R ... L ... R ... L ... (/robot)

    ReplyDelete
  4. That must be one of the worst lineups fielded this year.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Dustin Nippert - on the all-racist team?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Naturally, this team would be located in Cleveland.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Damn...eff the Rangers and their good defense

    ReplyDelete
  8. Fuck. DO just said the way its set up, Tek catches Beckett and Lester.

The two games I'm going to this week. Sigh. Looks like I'll be seeing a lot of automatic outs and cactuses behind the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Fuck. Mike Young is a sox killa.

    ReplyDelete
  10. "Looks like I'll be seeing a lot of automatic outs and cactuses behind the plate."

I think the C on his shirt actually stands for Cactus

    ReplyDelete
  11. lol, makes sense.

Wonder if we'll see a brawl today. Keep it going for Junichi.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm happy to be seeing Beckett. I'll deal with the Cactus.

    ReplyDelete
  13. At least we'll have Yook back, and hopefully Drew. Will lessen the effects of the cactus slightly.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Last year when Tay and I went to Baltimore for a pair we got a god-awful outing by Dice on Sat. night, but Beckett threw a gem Sunday to make it all better. Hope he does the same for you guys. He's a joy to watch when he's right.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Okay...really could use a double play now

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, Beckett will be sweet. I don't think I've seen him yet...well maybe last year. Not sure.

But at least I'll be missing Halladay.

    ReplyDelete
  17. And LBJ might break the single-season SB mark on Tuesday!

    At 53 now - 1 to tie, 2 sets a new record

    ReplyDelete
  18. feels a bit odd to have a lead.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Guess Ortiz read comment #2!

Maybe he read last week's SI.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 8 and 9 performing as expected.

WTF was that play from last night (Anderson) - jesus christ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. that anderson pull-up will stick in my mind for a long time when i think of him. it's unfair, probably, but that was BAD.

    ReplyDelete
  22. WHITE LINES blow you away...

  23. Anyone have the radio on?

    Today in history:
    Babe Ruth dies
    Elvis Presley dies
    Jimy is fired

    ReplyDelete
  24. 3-0 dong? Shit.

    ...

Angell's piece on that Darling-Viola duel is fantastic. I think he watches it with Smoky Joe Wood's grandson.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah. Obie went all Cap'n Intangibles on Varitek...

Castig mentioned Kinsler called the Red Sox clubhouse to apologize for barking at Tek after getting hit last night...

Obie said, "I think that was a good move on Kinsler's part. You don't want to be on Jason Varitek's bad side."

    The Who played Woodstock...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Obie said, "I think that was a good move on Kinsler's part. You don't want to be on Jason Varitek's bad side."

But maybe Tek turns and runs from a fight the way he quickly goes from a SASAHE to the bench!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Castig called the Kinsler homer right before the pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  29. lucky bounce on that one.

    get the 3rd out, taz

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lucky break there

    Get the third out

    ReplyDelete
  31. First Viola story:
1984, Twins in pennant race, in Texas for day game, hot, twins up 1-0 after 6, Frank gets first out in 7th, catcher tim laudner comes out, says "you're pitching too well, i need some tv time!"

Looking at FV's logs, the day was September 16, 1984. Twins 1-0 after 6, Laudner was catcher. BUT Viola walked the first guy in the 7th. If it happened, it was probably the 6th.

I say he got this one right.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nice hit.
Why is the Rangers manager wearing a towel around his neck. I see all the people in the stands fanning themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have a bad feeling about this game...

    ReplyDelete
  34. i've been getting those pretty much every day now. but we're facing dustin freakin' nippert for fuck's sake. that ought to be goosd for about 6 runs.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Taz:

    PC going down: 22-17-14
    but RA going up: 0-1-2

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lead-off walk.
Almost always bodes ill for us, maybe it will for them.

    PC going down: 22-17-14
    but RA going up: 0-1-2

    that's highly unusual )

    ReplyDelete
  37. It'd be nice for the Red Sox to, you know, turn this around. Especially today.

I need SOMETHING to go right for me today, because my optimism for later is almost non-existent.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If your bats are struggling, just walk - nice strategy.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What the hell - did Kotch swing 1st pitch after 7 strt. balls by Nippert?

    ReplyDelete
  40. WHEELS!!!

why did kotch hack at the first pitch after 8 of 9 pitches were ball?????

    ReplyDelete
  41. Infield defense!

Such a sight for sore eyes

    ReplyDelete
  42. So, apparently Kotch did swing 1st pitch. GDGD has the whole inning screwed up. Shows 4 pitches thrown to him, but the FIRST one says "in play, out(s)"
I guess you're thinking you should get a good pitch to hit after 7 strt balls, but....I dunno. Ida wanted hin to take at leat 1.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Tazawa > 2009 Smoltz

He hasn't given up 5 runs in a game yet!

    ReplyDelete
  44. how about some more "good times", flo?

    ReplyDelete
  45. J-Bay.
Now if we can get a multi-dong day out of Papi......

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ida prefered the double dong, but the 8 balls will do.

    wait....did I say that?

    ReplyDelete
  47. GDGD shows an inside ch-up. That's a pitch that should be crushed

    ReplyDelete
  48. VMart being VTek, standing up...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sheez, that was dangerous. Nice play by LBJ.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Don't get hurt Jacoby!
And sign that kid in the stands to a contract.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh woops. Didn't take my last comment.

Flebotomy! That's when FY does something GOOD that causes opposition LOBotomy! I just made that up. Go me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Petey saves a run. Now let's make the good play count.

    ReplyDelete
  53. NESN's Coors Light freeze cam promo showed just... a blur where Pedroia was sliding to get the ball. Freeze frame! Blur.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Be... offensive! Be be offensive!

    K, I'll stop.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Casey at the bat.
    Casey on the base.
    Do not squander

    ReplyDelete
  56. The Brian Anderson Era has not filled me with glee.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This team is not helping my uber-crappy mood.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The Josh Reddick era at least came with some offense... Not to mention some Pedroia-like cockiness.

    ReplyDelete
  59. "This team is not helping my uber-crappy mood."

    Same here.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Come on Sox, win it for L and Ish!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Your timing, L, is not exactly impeccable.

    :(

    ReplyDelete
  62. We should have traded for him...

    Shit

    ReplyDelete
  63. But hey. It was only a solo dong.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hits keep on coming.

    Time to go, Junichi.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 2 Laser Shots - time for a change

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yeah, really not having a good feeling about this game

    ReplyDelete
  67. I might've spoken way too soon, saying Tazawa hasn't given up 5runs in a start yet.

    My bad.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Dave O'Brien's not helping much. He acts like if we don't hold the lead for the WC at the end of this game, we will not win the WC.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I see Tito agrees. Didn't see who was coming in.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Dave O'Brien would be better suited calling play-by-play for the movie Jaws.

    ReplyDelete
  71. "Didn't see who was coming in."

    Oki

    ReplyDelete
  72. From one Mt. Fijiman to another.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Please don't make me navigate the icy waters of uncertainty with a Red Sox loss. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  74. viola calls the bunt "a lost art"

they were saying that when i was a kid -- before viola's career started!

    ReplyDelete
  75. i wonder if frank was always an nostalgic old fart, or if it developed as soon as he retired.

    ReplyDelete
  76. So we've got an analyst who looks like he came straight out of 70s porn... Now we have an analyst who looks like he came straight out of 80s porn.

    No pun intended.

    ReplyDelete
  77. 2 line drive DPs in 1 day - highly unusual.
2nd highly unusual in 1 day - highly unusualer

    ReplyDelete
  78. this is one of those days where 4-2 seems like 9-2.

    ReplyDelete
  79. eck would be totally believable as the door-to-door "cheese" salesman who rings the doorbell of the scantily-clad divorcee.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Not a good day for our lead-off man so far

    ReplyDelete
  81. DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

    4-3

    FY: never say die

    ReplyDelete
  82. 5th home run this month, 6th since the All-Star Break

    ReplyDelete
  83. When I heard Viola for the 1st time last night, I was really surprised they put him on the air. It's a bias of mine - not good. But to me his heavy accent makes him sound really stupid. Add that to what he's saying... announcer fail.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Actually - you CAN repeat it often enough.
    Maybe even too often.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Time for Jason to dump Mr. Mathis in Thunder Bay.

    ReplyDelete
  86. WOW did you see the play at the plate in the Trop? Who was that... Hill? Went busting into the catcher who was blocking the plate. He got the ball in time but he never really tagged him. Hill just shoved him out of the way, touched home plate and was safe.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Instead Jason is a victim of Mathis Murder.

    ReplyDelete
  88. How does this team hit into so many double plays?

    ReplyDelete
  89. we've been over this. :>)

    lots of guys on base.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 9-2 now seems like a one-run deficit.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Going into today's games, they had 103 DP. 2nd in AL behind Clev -- 104.

So there have been a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  92. So Dave O'B thinks that the Red Sox could not make up 0.5 game in 45 games?

    ReplyDelete
  93. When I heard Viola for the 1st time last night, I was really surprised they put him on the air. It's a bias of mine - not good. But to me his heavy accent makes him sound really stupid. Add that to what he's saying... announcer fail.

Ron Darling is calling the game on TBS. Is that what you would consider a Mass. accent? It sounds Mass. to me.
    He's actually pseudo-Canadian.

    ReplyDelete
  94. The Red Sox could make up half a game by going through customs tomorrow. Rangers play the Twins tomorrow while Sox are off.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Ron Darling just sounds funny to me. But I like him. Just as long as he doesn't get sucked into the Buck Martinez OR-tiz vortex.

    ReplyDelete
  96. NICK - if you are out there, try that log-in during the game.

    ReplyDelete
  97. So, when's the last time Flo hit 2 in a day?

    ReplyDelete
  98. I'd like to see some dongs right about now

    ReplyDelete
  99. "So, when's the last time Flo hit 2 in a day?"

I know he had two in one inning last year in the Charlie Zink 19-17 game against the Rangers

    ReplyDelete
  100. Looks like the last was September 17th last year against the Rays

    ReplyDelete
  101. Looks like it will not happen today...

    ReplyDelete
  102. are we sure drew cannot hit?

(he hit the dong after he asked out and tito said no the other night.)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Don't we have anyone who can hit for Gonzo?

    ReplyDelete
  104. At least he didn't GIDP

    Come on Sea Bass!

    ReplyDelete
  105. what are the odds s-bass gets a hit?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Crap. Wicked break. Looked a tad high.

    ReplyDelete
  107. what the hell?
    That was NOT a strike.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Gonzo could power the Heart of Gold (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and its Improbability Drive.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Eh, it was borderline

Definitely not a pitch you take with two strikes

    ReplyDelete
  110. alright. hold 'em here and we have the top of the order in the 9th (against o'day?).

    ReplyDelete
  111. FY has never homered twice in one game

I'd like to see that change today

    ReplyDelete
  112. Eh, it was borderline

Definitely not a pitch you take with two strikes

I know, batters who take borderline pitches with two strikes and two outs is a huge pet peeve of mine.
J.D. Drew, I'm looking in your direction.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Is it just me or is Ram^2 not getting much behind his fastballs?

    ReplyDelete
  114. GDGD says only 3 this inning: 89, 91 and 92.

    ReplyDelete
  115. TBS just mentioned an old college match-up between Darling and Viola. Then showed Viola over in the other booth.
You're right - straight out of the porn studio!

    runs plz - NOW!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Francisco's got a 25.50 ERA against the heart of the order.

    ReplyDelete
  117. viola just called francisco's last outing "shaky".

    understatement.

    ReplyDelete
  118. A freaking disaster would be my analysis.

Why am I not in the booth?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Tough day at the office for LBJ.
Hope he gets another chance :)

    ReplyDelete
  120. Maybe Ellsbury should lose the sunglasses at the plate. I had coaches who wouldn't let you wear sunglasses when you batted.

    ReplyDelete
  121. WAY too much taking of borderline pitches today!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Phooey. I'll go see how Tiger is doing.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Pepe and I agree on that one. You DON"T take anything close with 2 strikes.

And the water is clean and we are behind them.
    Sux.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Please note: we are out of the wild card lead - today. Not out of the wild card race.

    Stupid clean water.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I hope this isn't an indication of things to come later. Cock.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Actually, my brother is at some NASCAR race today in Michigan, maybe I'll turn that on to make sure he isn't getting killed.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Is it just me, or are the Mariners the worst .500+ team ever?

    ReplyDelete
