Mark Buehrle Retires 45 In A Row

White Sox starter Mark Buehrle set a new major league record last Tuesday night when he retired his 45th consecutive batter.

Buehrle retired the last batter he faced on July 18. On July 23, he pitched a perfect game (with DeWayne Wise getting a save!). And he retired the first 17 batters on July 28.

The old record had been 41, set by Jim Barr of the 1972 Giants and Bobby Jenks of the 2007 White Sox.

  1. Being in the park to witness that catch would have been INTENSE.

  2. I'd like to see him retire another 27 in a row today.

  3. Two things:
In the game against the MFY yesterday, they showed that the White Sox put up a sign where he made the catch, that says, well, "the catch". Looks pretty permanent.
And how improbable is it that a record like that is broken by a starting pitcher while one of the record holders is sitting in the bullpen?
