WS1: Phillies 6, Yankees 1

Phillies - 001 001 022 - 6 9 1
Yankees - 000 000 001 - 1 6 0

Cliff Lee pitched a complete game (9-6-1-0-10, 122), not allowing a Yankee beyond second base until an unearned run scored in the ninth.

Chase Utley hit two solo home runs off Sabathia (7-4-2-3-6, 113) and Raul Ibanez hit a two-run single in the eighth. Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard had RBIs in the ninth.

Derek Jeter had three of New York's six hits and scored the lone run in the ninth. Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Mark Teixeira was also 0-for-4 and, like Slappy, failed to hit the ball out of the infield.

It's the third straight World Series in which the Yankees lost Game 1 (2001 and 2003). Eleven of the last 12 teams to win Game 1 have gone on to win the World Series.
Example
Cliff Lee (3.22, 138 ERA+) / CC Sabathia (3.37, 133 ERA+)

  1. Some of Peter Abraham's Media Day observations:

    • The dumbest question of the day came from a NYC television reporter who asked assorted Yankees how they would fare in the New York City Marathon.

    • A TV reporter from Scranton, Pa., asked Phil Hughes if winning the World Series would compare to winning the International League championship last season. Phil, to his credit, did not burst out laughing.

    • Here's the difference between A-Rod and Jeter: The Yankees PR director stood guard behind A-Rod during his entire session, waiting to rescue him from any sticky situations or send text messages to Kate Hudson. Jeter was left on his own. It's amusing that a 34-year-old man needs a babysitter.

  4. Actually they call it a "handler" for A-Rod.

    ReplyDelete
  5. This should be the first non-Red Sox World Series game thread, right?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yep.

I watched the WS without fail until 2003, though I did see most of the deciding game that year. It helped ease the pain slightly.

Watched some in '05 and '06, but not any entire games. Saw very little in '08.

  7. Really? I am surprised. I can't say I watch every inning of the World Series, but I always watch a good portion of the games, if I can. It's the last time I get to see baseball until the spring, and even when I don't care who wins, I savor these last 4-7 games. I don't watch sports all winter, except maybe the Superbowl to be sociable. It's baseball or nothing at all.

  8. Bigmouth Rollins vows Phils will win in 5!

From the actually quote "...but I'm thinking five, close it out at home."

    That's a vow?

Do you take this man to be your husband? I think. And do you take this woman to be your wife? I think.

  9. Maybe I watched more than I remember. I'd have to see if I kept scorecards. I remember enjoying the hell out of the 14-inning Game 3 in 2005.

I think all I saw of 2008 was the resumption of the suspended Game 5.

  10. Buck and McShithead annoy me so friggin' much, that I would have to watch on mute -- and that's hard to do when I don't have a stake in the game.

We get a Fox feed from Buffalo, but we also get the international feed, which I think is O'Brien and Sutcliffe. I was really hoping for the Dodgers, so we could get Scully on the audio. Are the Phillies radio guys any good?

  12. I resent that these assholes are using music from Star Wars.

    ReplyDelete
  13. They don't seem to understand they are using it backwards, as well. They are the Empire, not the rebels. Morons.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And it's O'B and Sut for me.

Which I suppose is a step up from Buck and the Artist Formerly Known as Tim McCarver.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Phillies radio guys aren't too bad. They're pretty decent. Too bad Harry Kalas is dead... :\

    ReplyDelete
  16. What are the chances a clearly blown call decides the series?

    Gotta be at least 15%.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The JD shots were 0-for-3 this year, but I think they'll work for the Phillies here.

(Or I say that simply because I like alcohol.)

    ReplyDelete
  18. HA.

MFY introducing themselves with country. Slappy says his name and totally pauses, you can see him deciding what should I say, before his says DR.

    MORON!

  19. Ready for a little Interleague baseball?

I'm rooting for the red team.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Rollins: "Here's an out. ... You're welcome."

    Asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, that's just fucking amazing plate discipline.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nope

    Not a thing

It just decided to randomly use my GMail username for a while, apparently

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not that I know of, although Werth used to be in the Blue Jays minor league system

    ReplyDelete
  33. As a catcher, actually.

Amusing story: When Werth was in the Jays farm system, Kevin Cash was too. The Jays apparently though Cash would turn out to be the better catcher, so they converted Werth to the outfield.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ah, dang, I forgot about Stairs.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I want to see a lot of THAT tonight!

    ReplyDelete

    damon's noodle in RF???

    bring it on.

    ReplyDelete
  43. sut clearly calling cabrera "milky" twice on that play.

    ReplyDelete
  44. sut says victorino in recent years has "learned the value of putting the ball in play".

so before, he thought striking out was the way to go?

    ReplyDelete
  45. utley's 26 straight playoff games on base is a new MLB record

    ReplyDelete
  46. Interesting trivia fact: the Phillies have been in seven World Series (including this one), and in six of the seven it was against a team that is currently in the American League East.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I knew that insanely short porch in right would come in handy.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ok, keep the pressure on. SCORE MORE RUNS NOW

    ReplyDelete
  49. SUT called that werth K "a productive out" because he made CC throw 5 pitches. getting his PC up.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Just saw the post that only Ruth and R.Jackson have had two HRs in a game before Utley tonight. Wow, that's surprising.

    ReplyDelete
  68. sut quietly and clearly ripping girardi.

says ibanez sucks mightly against LHP and hits RHP. so girardi did not even have the LHP coke up, let alone bring him in, and let ibanez face the RHP robertson -- 2 run single.

says girardi will have a lot of Q to answer if mfy lose.

    ReplyDelete
  69. So basically... Girardi has a lot of questions to answer.

Game 1 and he's already being out-managed. Well, more like out-managing himself. Manuel hasn't had to make any decisions. Just keep putting Flee out there.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ruth and Mr. Cocktober are the only ones with 3 HR, not 2.

    Lee BTB!

    ReplyDelete
  71. MFY never shut out in 2 straight WS games.

last game in 2003 (beckett) and tonight could be the first time

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  74. Bruney wanted #SS but Matsui already had it

  76. RU-iz. Who does McMoron think he is? Buck Martinez?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  79. Good job! Keep tacking on and keep wearing down this already shitty pen

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  81. Chip Caray has "fisted", Joe Buck has "squirter" and McMoron has "plops one."

    ReplyDelete
  83. WELL, THERE'S A LOT, A LOT OF ASS BEING KICKED HERE.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Gotta love the tweets about Cliff Lee:

    - Fox pre-empted "Glee" for "Lee"

    - Cliff Lee just looked at Kate Hudson, and now she's pregnant. So is Goldie Hawn.

    ReplyDelete
  85. McMoron, usually when you win 40 pennants you also will play 40 WS game ones. Dick brain.

    ReplyDelete
  86. it's 5-0! This isn't the tying run on second! Who fucking cares???

    ReplyDelete
  87. Cliff Lee Facts:

    - Derek Jeter thinks Cliff Lee has calm eyes

    - Cliff Lee just spit out a sunflower seed. It hit the ground and instantly grew into a sun.

    - Cliff Lee makes Joe Buck cry into his pillow at night.

    - Cliff Lee has always been able to navigate New Facebook

    ReplyDelete
  88. O'B says this game is just about out of reach.

    ReplyDelete
  89. they're just fucking with me now, right? It's a big practical joke, they're not REALLY showing Jeter's face on half the screen on every pitch are they?

    ReplyDelete
  90. - The 1st season of 24 was based on the exploits of Cliff Lee. In reality, he kicked terrorist ass in 6 hours.

    - Answering Cliff Lee on every question of your SAT will guarantee you at least a 2000.

    - Cliff Lee lost 60 lbs. the day he was circumcized

    ReplyDelete
  91. HE LEADS OFF NEXT INNING YOU KNOW!!!

... or the CIA is doing it to drive you insane.

    ReplyDelete
  92. No, O'B, that was not a collison at home plate. If it was, Dumbo woulda run back to the dugout to avoid it.

    ReplyDelete
  93. My very own Cliff Lee Fact:

Some say he eats bagels then shits them out onto a linescore.

    ReplyDelete
  94. McCarv keeps saying they're "letting" Lee pitch and he's "allowed" to pitch. No, they're NOT letting/allowing the bullpen to come in when Lee is doing just fine

    ReplyDelete
  95. oh like Yankee fans are gonna know Blister in the Sun....

    ReplyDelete
  96. Good to see Slappy back to his usual form.

    ReplyDelete
  97. A-Rod Ks, but his love of the game is renewed so it's okay... (did McCarver really say that before or did I dream it?)

    ReplyDelete
  98. international feed showing mfy fans looking totally wrecked and despondent -- like this is game 7!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. "

And Fox trying it, not realizing the guy they were showing had a bulletproof vest on--not exactly a paying customer.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  102. mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmmmmmmm!
