Orioles - 000 000 210 - 3 9 2David Ortiz hit his first home run of the year, Adrian Beltre drew a bases-loaded walk (his second BB of the night!) to bring in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and Jonathan Papelbon struck out Julio Lugo with two men on for the final out of the game.Jeremy Guthrie / Jon Lester
Red Sox - 011 010 01x - 4 6 0
Baltimore began the season by winning only one of their first 12 games. At 2-14, they are 10 GB. In their last 12 games, they have scored more than two runs only three times. As a team, they are hitting .225/.285/.358. That's a .643 OPS. As a comparison, Jason Varitek's OPS last year was .703.
Anything less than a three-game sweep will be a disappointment.

I'm hoping to see a Lester with a working cutter.
Have a good time, Patrick. At least the odds are we will win. But then again...who know these days.
Yay, JoS represented at Fenway.
Boo, MASN on EI. MLB Audio to the rescue.
Hoping for a win. Probably going to rest the eyes from the computer most of the night. Too much eye strain lately.
Enjoy, Amy. It's good to watch w/o threading now and again - definitely easier on the eyes.
Thanks, Laura. I will be checking in now and then, especially if something exciting happens. Or something so exasperating that I need to vent. I am hoping for the former, of course!
Dodgers just put Manny on DL and Dave OB is ... commenting on it.
Innuendos. Suggestions.
Hey OB: You're an asshole!
No innuendo there!
alright. i am here.
doing work, but nesn in ear.
Garza's getting a good rogering from the Jays in the first. 4-0 and the inning is continuing as he serves up a HBP.
Recurring case of Lugoitis bites Scutaro again.
Curse of the Lugo
BELTRE!!!!!!!!
That inning was about 100x more stressful than it needed to be.
LARGE FATHER DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOT DEAD YET!!!!!!!!!!!
Yay, Papi! First dong of the season.
Depositing a 95 mph fastball over the wall isn't too bad.
Nice, Papi. And to left center, too.
I had a feeling he might. I admit, it was a pretty small feeling, but it was there.
I've been looking forward all day to coming home, having dinner and zoning out w/ the game on TV.
I know I've been away, but since when did they start playing baseball on ice?
"Not Dead Yet" is the name of a radical disability rights group.
I just imagined Wily Mo Pena attempting to catch a fly ball while skating on ice. It made me laugh a little inside.
Nick, the game is on NESN Plus. Are you a Comcast person? I have Charter, and it is on 22 here.
wtf with the low strike?
en fuego!
Amy, thanks! I don't have a converter box so I have it normally, but Time Warner has kindly put the feed on their branded channel in the lower part of the lineup.
I've been listening to the audio on my phone, but this is far better...
Has anybody seen this?
link
And can anybody tell me what it is?
Did you see this article?
That story Amy posted is something Allan frequently talks about, or writes about. Or maybe he talks about writing about it.
That is crazy, Laura. bizarre! I'll check yours too, Amy, but it involves words.
The words are pretty skimable.
WTF? TW just upcut the game w/ a commercial break. granted I wasn't listening to those guys either, but still...
Wily Mo? I laugh at that image too, but an odd one to pop into your head just now.
Least they came back for the single.
Hmmm, I wonder if this is a cut above the usual stuff:
"But something is different in Boston, and it has to do with the Red Sox. Boston fans celebrated two World Series championships in the past decade, but they lost something in the exchange: an edge, a chip on their shoulder, a passion; eternal agitation and a running feud with the baseball gods.
Even with the team’s losing streak and the wretched offense, the sense of doom and gloom that defined Red Sox fans — and provided journalists with outstanding material — is not apparent.
Now wins and losses are simply that — wins and loses. Losing streaks are no longer connected to generations of crushed hopes and dreams.
“Winning a championship went from being an obsession to being a really good thing,” Allan Eisner, a longtime fan, said Tuesday as he walked to Fenway. “At least we know that when the stars are aligned, when people do the right thing, a championship can be had.”
Is this newfound peace a good thing?
Not even the Yankees’ gearing up for consecutive championships seems to have Red Sox fans on edge. ...
On the other hand, Sherri Geller has become a more patient fan since 2004. Geller describes herself as a lifelong fan who lives and dies with the Celtics and the Red Sox.
“I felt there was such a sense of urgency, like, can we finally do it?” she said. “And now I feel more patient. O.K., if not this year, I hope we’ll win another year.”
Asked about the sense of peace, Geller conceded that she has been a changed fan since 2004.
“I love the Red Sox just as much, but I don’t care in the same way,” she said. “I don’t feel in my heart every win and loss, every live-or-die moment the way I did before 2004. I just feel that now that the Red Sox have won, everything’s right in the world.”
*********
Yes, I thought of Allan when I read it. I feel that way also. For better or for worse, some of the edge is gone. (For worse only in the sense that that intensity which made every game, every season seem so critical is exciting if exhausting.)
Hopefully only the tiniest bit "for worse"! That is one edge we can all live without. It was painful enough to watch someone I love go through it.
Laura, that's pretty hilarious.
Hard to say, but the second comment on this page that also has the video may shed some light.
Bad Jon. Bad, bad, bad.
So is that Korean HBP thing for real??
I read that comment, but I wasn't sure if it was real or a joke. YouTube comments being what they are.
We need a fan of Korean baseball.
for some reason, i don't see yook and joba doing that the next time the teams brawl.
It's a great image, tho - Yook and Joba. Ha ha ha.
c'mon original houdini!
OK, so a joke. I did find it hard to believe cultural differences could be that great!
I would pay big money (if I had oodles of it to spare) to see Youk pull that move.
The bases are loaded. Now before 2004, I would have been fuming. Bases loaded by the team in the cellar? We are sunk, we are dead.
Now, eh, we will win if not today, maybe tomorrow.
And Lester gets out of the jam.
Oh my mistake, I thought Zen was linking to something else.
Thanks, this makes a lot more sense! Or I should say, makes any sense.
It must have been hilarious to see in person.
Yep. We lost 3-0 last night and I don't think I was annoyed for even 3 seconds when it ended. Strange, but it's how it is.
Is it better? I know one thing: it can't be worse. Millions of Red Sox fans followed the team their whole lives and never saw what we saw.
Twice!!!
(I do have to write about this.)
I feel bad for the O's. I'd like to see 'em get some wins--4 games from now.
Castig & OB are singing the praises of Ernie "keep fucking that chicken" Anastos. He's giving a commencement address somewhere and they are acting like he is Edward R Murrow.
I think the phenomenon of Sox fans sort of relaxing is true. But to me it's become kind of an obvious thing, and not really worth comment anymore. So we're not all clenched anymore. I say hallelujah.
And I'll say it twice. While hopping on one leg.
WTF. Another commercial break?
Oh, I definitely agree. But I guess the masochist in me sometimes misses some of that suffering.
Fortunately, the month of April 2010 has given me a teensy taste of that suffering, and yah, definitely not missing it.
The result of Youk's AB have not appeared on Yahoo GameChannel.
I agree that it's barely worth mentioning among Sox fans anymore. But Bill Rhoden writes for Mets & Yankees fans mostly. Plus maybe he was out of ideas, who knows.
Wow, missing suffering! I cannot imagine.
Nice!
Woo-hoo! 2 for 38 throwing runners out!
it's easy if you don't involve the catcher!
The Orioles are always the cure for what ails ya.
Take an Orioles and call me in the morning.
Do my eyes deceive me?
Caught Stealing?
I think the article came up because of the sucky season so far. We haven't had such a bad start since 2004 (IIRC), so maybe Rhoden saw this as the first real test to see if Sox fans were going to start jumping off the Green Monster into the traffic on the Pike.
Officially caught stealing but really a pickoff.
Zen, you don't have MLB audio or anything?
but a lot of those articles go the "they lost their identity, they don't know what to do" route of bullshit. so this is nice to see.
Stupid fans were ready to jump over a slump in 2007. We got swept by the Jays - A & I were there for two horrible losses, Gagne was involved - and people were completely losing it.
But of course winning the division was...
INEVITABLE.
Uh, I could have it. But it would distract me too much. This is the right level of distraction for me when I'm working.
don talking about scenetd candles. did they get free samples? don talking about hand sanitizer and says to jerry "you must go through a --" and stops. !!
I'll stop dwelling on this, but it just came back from commercial and 2 seconds later the local TW commercial break kicks in. I just missed an entire at bat.
Are they really prattling on about hand sanitizer?
I like listening to the audio only at work. But your work may use your brain more than mine does.
****
I like Rhoden, he is usually very fair and can be interesting. Not that I've read him in ages, but when I used to.
WTF are Jerry and Don talking about??
Nice D, Tejader.
you suck, miggy! go get offended by me saying FUCK YOU!
Is DO drunk? His voice sounds heavy.
LOL, Allan, this is the second time you answered my question before I posted it!
Here's a first for me, I'm choosing MASN over Red Sox radio. Yeesh.
Does a player ever evade a tag in those rundowns?
geez. looks like if I were playing third.
(well...on me those would all be hits. I'd never even get close).
LOL
Doot doot doobeydoobeydoobeydoobey doot doot doobeydoobeydoobeydoobey
i miss that back and forth stuff, don ever so slightly ragging on remy for his habits, etc.
But your work may use your brain more than mine does.
My second job, not really. Teaching, yes.
I'm applying for full-time teaching at City College San Francisco. Very nervous and excited about it. To be able to quit this other job would be so nice.
Good luck, I hope you get it.
Don sometimes drives me nuts with his media guide reading, but he is really so good at what he does. He really showed that last year when Remy was gone.
This is only the fourth time Manny has been on the DL. Ever.
(This includes all DL trips attributable to either knee.)
That's great, Zen. Hope it works out. Being a full time academic is a great way to make a living. I feel so lucky.
Thanks, L.
media guide reading?
Baby Doll Jacobson...I wonder who he played for.
Thanks, L.
Re Manny, Castig said Dodgers placed Manny on DL. He said his [hamstring? ankle? not sure] wasn't feeling better, so they took him up on it and put him on the DL.
Obie laughed a little and said, perhaps that was not the response Manny was expecting. I wonder if it surprised him.
Chuckle chuckle.
Rooting for ya, Zen.
Baby Doll? Now that guy gets on my girls team!
Media guide reading, when Don drones on and on telling us what round draft pick someone was, what date they were called up from the minors, what they ate for dinner the day of their first start, and so on.
Amy, you may not notice it with your super powers to tune out extraneous sounds! **
What is the pitch count for Lester?
BaseballLibrary.com says:
At Mobile (Southern League) in 1912, the grandstand band played "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" after Jacobson's Opening Day homer, and the next day's paper captioned his photo, "Baby Doll."
***
Also, in 1927 he played seven consecutive games for the Red Sox without a putout or assist. (outfielder)
** One exception: Jon Miller
that swing/miss was 105, i think
Thanks for the explanation. Yeah, droning does not enter the precious zone between my ears. It's also partly why I never know who these "other" players are for so long.
Jon Miller: uch. Haven't yet had to hear that voice this season.
I just cracked open a bottle of Mommy's Time Out. Best wine brand name ever.
That is a GREAT name! I want a bottle!
Mommy's Time Out? A wine? For real?
Someone else's picture.
Shakespeare - on the real Shakespeare's birthday.
Where's it from? I mean the wine, not where you bought that bottle. :)
Mr. Atkins is certainly getting his opportunities tonight.
Lester sure gets pissy. He doesn't seem like the type to throw his glove in temper.
Montorso Vicentino, Italy, by way of East Hanover, NJ.
Boy, talk about stranding RATS.
It is fun to play the Orioles.
FY beating himself up.
nice catch.
bastard.
This stuff doesn't taste half bad either.
Nice catch.
I was surprised to Lester going at it in the dugout too. Seemed a bit much under the circumstances.
Does Mommy's Time Out make a red, too? Not that I could get it in Ontario, anyway.
Yes, a rosso primitivo.
Papi pissy also. Can't blame him though.
Now that's some nice defense.
Enjoy the weekend, all, and thanks for the encouragement on the job front.
I'll be away from the computer.
Nice!!
Bye Zen :)
You, too, Zen.
Actually I will be away from the computer and the TV this weekend. Going to set up our cottage, and Comcast isn't coming to hook us up until next week or the week after. Guess I will be listening on the car radio when I can.
Bah.
Meh.
Shit.
the catcher was involved in that one.
I've become distracted by a blog post about an exhibit at MOMA called "The Artist is Present". The artist sits at a table where visitor may sit in the chair across from her silently, some staying for an hour or more or coming back on multiple days. There's a flickr feed of photos of the people who sit across from her--almost 800 so far.
fascinating, including an anecdote about her ex/ex-collaborator sat down on the third day.
Shit. Meh. Bah.
so understated. Where the passion of desperation? Peace on earth.
why bother getting worked up? season's down the tubes anyway.
Nick, is this part of the same exhibit where two naked people stand near the entrance?
You folks make me laugh.
Even as Oki gives up a hit.
I guess the hockey folks like Tim and Ish must have been watching the hockey game tonight.
Done.
So with who pitches the 8th?
Bruins are losing, it's 4-1 in the 3rd period now.
Offhand, Amy, I've no idea. I've been pretty out of touch w/ the whole art world (as if I was every really in-).
As a group the pictures are interesting, but I've also been looking at them one at a time. People's faces and their (imagined) stories. Below each picture it tells how long they sat there. Many of them are 10-25 minutes each.
Everyone's face deserves to be looked at separately. But not at this hour during a game. (Not by me, anyway.)
Looks like you all were wildly wrong on your season W-L predictions. Looks like my unposted 13-149 is gonna be pretty right on.
I saw Nick's comment before I saw who left it, and momentarily thought it was a troll.
It sounds similarly themed. Watching people watching people.
Google tells me those are different pieces by the same artist. She is having a retrospective at MOMA.
Here is something about it.
hey hey hey it's maaaaaatt albers!
kirk is not pleased
From a NYT article on it:
Many headlines about the show have focused on the performance of people in the nude, two of whom stand in a narrow entrance to a gallery so that visitors using that door have to squeeze past them.
looked really safe in real time.
Yes, that's it. Apparently some idiots have been touching and otherwise harassing the naked people who are part of the exhibit. I guess that's not all that surprising. After all, people touch art all the time when they aren't supposed to.
hey hey hey it's maaaaaatt albers!
When I first heard the name tonight, I swear I thought I heard Fat Albert. I was laughing to myself over it when I read your comment.
The link I posted says most people are unfazed or find another way into the room. The screaming video sounds disturbing.
shit.
(mdc up also)
LUGO!
Oh, come on, Oki. Could we not LOSE to the worst team in baseball?
Luuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggooooooooooo!!!!
No losing. Do not worry.
Subbing in Lugo for your starting cleanup hitter and catcher when behind -- brilliant!
yadda yadda
Let's see if Slugo is an embedded Sock.
embedded secret weapon!
This Wieters guy is proving to be a Red Sox killer
Ha, I forgot about Secret Weapon!
BS he is getting squeezed
Does the Orioles manager remind anyone else of William Shatner?
i think we got a break there, foot off the bag?
Oh Amy. We call him William Shatner all the time.
Allan called him Kirk earlier in the thread.
That did not look like an out.
DP still in order..
I can't tell on MASN but Kirk is pretty wound up about it.
i.e. Kirk had reason to complain on that one.
OK, so I am late, but not wrong! And I came up with it on my own, so that's something.
so that's something.
It is something.
I could not resist that. Hopefully laughing with you.
MLB tv is lagging for me
Yes, I am always laughing. Especially at myself!
crap, tied
Uch. A tie.
setting the stage for a walk-off.
we will still win, do not worry
The 2 MASN announcers are pronouncing Montinez differently. One with a tilde for the N, one without. The team's own announcers should know how to say the players' names.
RSVP.
I will be happy if we take the lead this inning and avoid the bottom of the ninth. Though I do love the walkoff.
Maybe one can't roll the N.
Roll the n, you say. Hmm. ... :)
McDoñald?
I'm out of the thread for the night, see you when the water is dirty.
Drewingle!
I took French. No tilde in French.
A hit! A leadoff hit!
Over on MASN, Jim Palmer just suggested that Pedroia might bunt. That was pretty funny.
Palmer -- must be great to have a well-paying fun job and not need to do any thinking or prep work or know anything about what you are talking about.
Got him over, come on Youk double!
Bring him home. Now.
now pitching:
Oh, man!
The tactic of hitting the ball in Julio Lugo's general direction has failed. I am stunned.
Blech.
Edward Lee said...
Over on MASN, Jim Palmer just suggested that Pedroia might bunt. That was pretty funny.
Its funny because they are the Red Sox, and they just don't do that , but Pedroia is 1 for his last 20, and in reality it was like he did bunt
Make 'em pay, LF!
any hit will do.
I hope this comes back to haunt them.
All winning aside I really want a hit for Papi.
Beltre: The only thing we have to fear is ... he will hack at shitty pitches.
BB.
Can Beltre be the hero here?
Kirk managing like it's WS G7 -- might as well let him have his fun.
Belt one, Beltre!
