G52: Red Sox 8, Royals 1

Royals - 010 000 000 - 1 5 0
Red Sox - 001 033 01x - 8 10 0
While the bottom three in the Boston lineup went 6-for-11 and scored seven runs, Lester (7-4-1-4-5, 105) kept the Royals in check.

Jason Varitek singled, hit a solo home run, and scored twice; Bill Hall singled twice and scored two runs; and Mike Cameron doubled twice, walked, scored three times and drove in two.

Marco Scutaro had two doubles and a single and drove in two runs. David Ortiz hit a two-run dong to dead center. He also had a sac fly.

Lester walked three of the first 11 batters, including the leadoff man in both of the first two innings, but settled down after that. He retired 11 of 12 batters (and 15 of 18) at one point, as the bats teed off on Kansas City reliever Brad Thompson.

Out of Town: The White Sox beat the Rays 8-5. Justin Masterson shut out the Yankees for six innings, but New York rallied and beat Cleveland 7-3. The Blue Jays completed a sweep of the Orioles 6-1.

So everyone gains a game on Tampa: New York 3.5, Toronto 4.5, Boston 5.5.

  8. A bunt?

    Run Expectancy 1999-2002
the average number of runs that scored from base/out situations to the end of that inning

    On 2nd, 0 outs: 1.19 runs
    On 3rd, 1 out: 0.98 runs

Situations vary, of course ... but bunting a guy to 3rd with 0 outs decreases the chances of scoring.

  9. DFA Hall?
    He's our 3rd best reliever.

  15. New Hampshire is the prettiest state in the union, OB?

I live there, and I'm sure there are at least two prettier states bordering NH.

Though it's a matter of taste...

  16. I was watching the end of the Halladay perfect game yesterday, and I saw a Marlins fan with an old school Lowell jersey on.

    Was pleased to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Even bullpen haters might be able to relax today.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tek..so nice to see him get that offense going.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 579th consecutive sellout...

I wonder if they just sell all of the not-actually-sold-out tickets to stub hub, and count that.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I know how this sounds, but I can't believe people find what happened to Kendry Morales funny. They need to get their empathy meters checked.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tek's offense has been going all along. In limited playing time, he was spraying HRs all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I know how this sounds, but I can't believe people find what happened to Kendry Morales funny.

I agree completely. He broke it jumping on home base, or so it looked, and not getting crushed, but the circumstances are still kind of terrifying.

    ReplyDelete
  51. since i don't care how it impacts the angels' season, assuming he will be okay once it heals, it's pretty amusing.

it reminds me of some wacky story i might have read about as a kid about a Class D minor league game in the 1910s or so.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thanks, Patrick, I thought it might be just me. It must have been super painful, and it ends his entire season. Not funny.

    ReplyDelete
  53. nothing like watching red sox on a sunday kick somebodies arse.. if it was the yankees or rays would have been a hell of a holiday.

    ReplyDelete
  54. since i don't care how it impacts the angels' season, assuming he will be okay once it heals, it's pretty amusing.

Translation: It doesn't affect me, so it's funny.

    Humanity fail!

  55. Imagine having a broken leg and a big pile of men on top of it. Hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  56. not like standup comedy, but in a "how in the f could that happen?"

    ReplyDelete
  57. Fenway stands as one ...

    The water is Muddy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. i think the morales injury was more of a what the heck reaction. then because we knew he broke his leg.. i'm going don't jump on him!!!! Get off the poor guy. Just really sad.. I think large men just shouldn't try and jump up and go down as hard as they can..

    ReplyDelete
  59. If they got a really good close up of the leg breaking.. i.e. Joe Theissman then the grimace factor goes up and comedy indicator leaves. I think we laugh at the falling down person as a society so our chuckle meter was thrown off.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yeah well, I don't laugh at people falling down. I'm not saying I find it sad, but I always find it idiotic when people laugh at that stuff.

But the comments I saw weren't WTH. It was definitely WTH! The comments were ha ha ha, that is so funny.

    Oh yeah: water!

    ReplyDelete
  61. i.e. Joe Theissman then the grimace factor goes up and comedy indicator leaves.

For sure. No one laughed at Bryce Florie or Damon's head butt - no one I know anyway. It was painful to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Finally saw the Morales AB. Wild. The walk-off becomes a cart-off.

They are saying fractured left ankle, they are waiting a week on surgery (too swollen now), and it is possible he could play in September.
