[If there is a game thread, it will be here. (Update: And it's there!)]

Wakefield makes his 18th start (and 29th appearance) of the season. If he pitches at least 3.1 innings tonight, he'll reach 130 innings for the season, increasing his base salary for 2011 from $1.5 million to $2 million.

MLB.com's Tom Singer describes "life in the tough AL East":
The Red Sox still have the third-most wins in the AL; unfortunately for them, they also have the third-most wins in the AL East.
Example
September 8:

1916 - A's catcher/outfielder Wally Schang becomes the first switch-hitter in major league history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. He does it before the smallest crowd in American League history: 23.

1977 - Carlton Fisk and George Scott hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning in Toronto. It is the 16th time this season that Red Sox hitters have hit back-to-back homers, breaking the record set by the 1964 Twins. Fisk hits two dongs and drives in five runs as Boston wins 7-2.

  1. So it had no impact on the result of the game, but I found it interesting that Patterson made 3(!) mistakes on the play that ended up with both him and Victor out in the 6th. Getting hung up between 3rd and home, returning to the bag when Victor was already there and couldn't return to 2nd and then walking off 3rd after the tag. It did look to me like the 3rd base ump was calling Patterson out when he pointed at him but regardless that was some pretty poor baserunning.
