Red Sox - 000 004 010 - 5 9 0

Two-out rally in the sixth: Beltre double, Ortiz single, Lowell walk, Drew double (3-2), Kalish pinch-hit double (4-3).

Beckett's low point was walking four consecutive batters with one out in the third. Ellis had a two-run double in the fifth. Beckett's line: 6-5-3-5-7, 109.

Scott Atchison (7th/8th) and Jonathan Papelbon (9th) retired the last nine Oakland batters. Bot struck out the side, all looking.

The Blue Jays beat the Rays 5-4 and the Rangers beat the Yankees 4-1. ... With 19 games to play, Boston is 8 GB in the East and 7.5 GB in the WC.

Random crap: Beginning with the second game of the August 25 doubleheader, Boston is 5-10. ... Since July 31, the Red Sox have stolen 17 bases in 20 attempts. ... The Sox have lost 17 of their last 23 games in Oakland.

AL East:
Rays/Blue Jays, 1 PM
Yankees/Rangers, 3 PM
Example
September 12:

1912 - Cleveland needs only 11 innings to sweep a doubleheader from the Red Sox. The first game is called because of rain after five innings with the Naps up 9-3. The rain stops and the second game is called because of darkness after six innings with Cleveland ahead 6-0.

1979 - Carl Yastrzemski's eighth inning single off New York's Jim Beattie is his 3,000th career hit. Boston beats the Yankees 9-2 at Fenway. Yaz finishes his career with 3,419 hits, the most in Red Sox history, 765 more than #2 Ted Williams (2,654).

  3. Allan, I'm sure you can have the answer for me in no time.

What is the Sox record this year when ahead after six innings?
What was the record last year?

  6. Good stuff. I've gotta learn you to do b-ref searches like that!

    ReplyDelete
  7. umm... learn HOW to do searches like that.

  8. Thanks Allan. My husband and I are discussing pitching vs. offense woes this year.

    That was his question.

    B-ref?

  9. I agree RSDH. I tried a few times before I gave up and just asked Allan.

  10. It is under the gray "Scoring" tab here. Sometimes it's hard to remember where everything is. Every so often, I wander onto a page and am amazed at what I find. (Great minor league stats under "Other".)

  14. Hi, all. I may actually get to watch some baseball! We just got home, have to unpack and get dinner going.

MrsG, I cannot figure out how to use BRef either. Way too many options and numbers for this brain. Or at least I lack the time and patience to figure it out. Definitely easier to ask Allan. :)

  15. We are in DC getting ready to go to the Skins/Cowboys game. So we'll miss most of this game.

  16. So how do we interpret that statistic? Does it mean the bullpen has been less effective this year, as I tend to think? Or is it not statistically significant? Or does it mean the starter has blown it after the 6th inning?

Maybe the question is what the record was after seven innings, since it is rare that any starter goes 8 or 9 innings these days. Not that I have a clue how to do that search.

  17. one year to the next, i'd say insignificant. how does it vary over 10-20 seasons both with the sox and other teams?

weaker offense + bad starters/pen will = tight games in later innings and thus greater opportunity to lose a lead.

i wonder if we could get W/L after 6 innings when:
    up by 1
    up by 2
    up by 3, etc.

  18. This starter may not make it out of the third....

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well, the game's official now. We've walked in a run.

Well, "we" can't. Perhaps YOU can. :)

  21. Maybe that stuff is on BRef. Or maybe you have to go through box scores one at a time and count games as you go.

    Oh, JD..........

  33. Good thing you don't have access to the postgame show on NESN... Tom Caron's guest tonight is........ Nick Cafardo! *hangs self*

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd probably avoid the post-game show anyway, except for the interview room segments.

Speaking of Dr. Nick, here he is today, writing about free agents, hometown discounts and players opting to sign long-term deals during their arb years:

"Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis could have gone into free agency rather than take a long-term deal from the Red Sox for less, but both of them love the team, the city, the atmosphere, and the medical care, so why give up all that to make a few extra bucks somewhere else ..."
