G147: Blue Jays 11, Red Sox 9

Blue Jays - 020 053 100 - 11 17 0
Red Sox - 200 003 022 - 9 12 1
We actually had a brief lead in this one, thanks to the first of Victor Martinez's two home runs. But to no one's surprise, Lackey (4.1-8-7-2-3, 83) gave it back, immediately -- and then some.

Boston trailed 10-2 in the sixth, but clawed back and had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Martinez, who had driven in the Sox's third run with a groundout in the sixth, then belted another two-run dong in the eighth. He came up empty this time, however, ending the game with a pop-up to shortstop.

The Yankees rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth and beat the Orioles 4-3, while the Angels broke a tie with a run in the top of their ninth and beat the Rays 4-3.

Boston lost a half-game in both standings, and are 7 GB in the East and 6.5 GB in the WC. 15 games to go.

Boston is 11-4 against Toronto this season. Two of those four losses were in games started by Lackey, who has allowed 24 hits and 10 walks in 18.2 innings (three starts, 7.71 ERA) to the Blue Jays this year.

Toronto has lost seven of its last eight games.

  1. Don Zimmer, near the same area of earth that he was thrown down onto by Pedro Martinez, is being announced as a Red Sox Hall of Famer.

  2. Though I knew about it in May, when Gerbil said it was a "total surprise" to him.

What the fuck has he done to deserve this?

  3. Castig and DO were emceeing the ceremony and it was like they struggled to find things of real hall-of-fame importance for the Gerbil.

For some reason (I forget why), my husband does not dislike him. Oh yeah, he says he works hard. I was in the kitchen during the first inning and he asked, "Are you mumbling about Lackey again?" Yes, I was.

  18. A, are you watching on mute or Sox radio or what? I'm trying to deal with the Jays announcers, but it's a losing battle.

  19. L, the news flash was sarcastic. Lackey is really the only player I voice my dislike for on this forum. I just do it over and over and over.

And I agree, but they really wouldn't have cared so much. They were going just to go. Just something to do.

  48. Lacky should have been at temple tonight - attoning.
Or he could just call Steven Colbert's ATTON-A-PHONE!
(Google it, I still haven't gotten around to learning this link stuff)

  49. That was close. The second stringers almost did it!

I was wondering why it took Cito so long to bring in the "closer". Usually he does it by his book: with-in 3 runs, or the runners on that would make it a three run game.

I thought the pop to shallow CF was going to drop - nice play by the kid, good looking athlete. Escobar and McDonald looked great up the middle on several plays, great footwork by both and they read each other well.

The second I saw Zimmer my mind went to the efficient Jujitsu move Pedro put on the raging pig.

    Great stuff.

I just haven't figured out how t do the cool "make it a link with my own title" thing. I'm pretty sure Allan or somebody explained it to Amy a while back, I just didn't commit it to memory.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh and....Don Zimmer has done SQUAT to deserve being in the RS HOF! I mean, he was an integral part of a very interesting and memorable moment in recent Red Sox history, but I'm not sure one moment entitles you to a spot in the HOF. And if it does, (see Dave Rberts!) I still don't think being shoved down on the ground by a HOF'er makes you one yourself.
    Just sayin'

  52. um, what?

"Burnett pitched the game with a black eye, and his right cheek was swollen. Girardi would not comment on how Burnett sustained the injury — “The story is he pitched well tonight, and that’s all we’re concerned about,” he said — and Burnett also refused to provide an explanation."

  53. Is it possible for the Sox to somehow unload Lackey in the offseason? He has been worse than bad. And we thought DiceK was bad. $82.5m - This is not one of Theo's better moves. Sorry for stating the obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Who the hell would want him at $15+ after this year, which right now is the worst of his career, ERA+-wise?
