Red Sox - 003 010 201 - 7 12 1Lester (7-2-0-3-8, 104) retired the first 12 Yankees and did not allow a hit until there was one out in the sixth. For those who care about such things, Lester is now 19-8, with one start remaining.
Yankees - 000 000 021 - 3 4 0
Boston battered Nova in the third, as Ryan Kalish was hit by a pitch, Daniel Nava walked, Lars Anderson singled, Marco Scutaro singled (1-0), J.D. Drew GIDP (2-0), Victor Martinez walked, and David Ortiz singled (3-0).
In the fifth, Drew doubled and Ortiz (facing Royce Ring) singled him home. Drew and Martinez hit back-to-back home runs to bnegint he seventh to boost the score to 6-0. The Red Sox got a run off Joba Chamberlain in the ninth as Jed Lowrie and Kalish hit consecutive doubles.
The win brought the Red Sox 5.5 GB the Yankees in the Wild Card, with eight games to play. The Rays beat the Mariners 9-1, increasing their AL East lead to 1.5 games.Jon Lester / Ivan Nova

In 109 games with St. Louis, Lopez hit .231/.310/.340. Since Lopez, 30, will likely be a Type B free agent this winter, if Boston offers arbitration and Lopez declines, the team would receive a supplemental draft pick. I cannot think of any other reason to have him around.
At 7 PM: Mariners/Rays.September 25:
1965 - Satchel Paige, at age 59, starts and pitches three innings for Kansas City. It is his first major league appearance in 12 years and he allows only one hit, a double to Carl Yastrzemski. The Red Sox win 5-2.

Hey, Lopez was pretty damn good last year. 3.9 WAR. Sure, there was BABIP luck involved, but he could still produce at a decent level.
Plus, how can you not like this?

I see The Jeter Love-a-thon is in full effect.
Hello. Time for some baseball. Finally.
Watching on mute. Very quiet.
Sadly, I am working, so I need some sound.
The only probably with watching on mute is that if I am typing, I can't tell when to look back up at the screen. Or I can't type.
Put sound on. Harvey went out. He is having a hard time watching baseball. Wonder why....
The only probably with watching on mute is that if I am typing, I can't tell when to look back up at the screen. Or I can't type.
That is L's problem when I want mute at home.
Is H nervous? Does he still fear the Sox? :>)
yikes.
Blogger keeps deleting my comments.
Anyway, I will try again. I don't know why Harvey can't watch, but he hates the late season/post-season. Perhaps the scars of 2004? He just finds it too stressful.
Strange. I can understand worrying about the actual playoffs, but not about getting in, at this point.
He's a very sensitive guy, what can I say?
:)
Happy 23, Lars!
LOADED!
Yes! Bases loaded, and no one out. How can we avoid blowing this?
Bases loaded with no outs. How many will score...??
Trouble for Nover!
7.
Happy Birthday, Lars!
Amy, that's my problem re mute, too. Why not use the radio sound? That's what I've got on (at work).
7! Great!
OK, that's one!
Pen up :)
Two plus two outs... now 5 more on the last out.
OK, at least we got two so far. Even with the DP.
poop - was not counting on that.
Radio? I don't even think we have one in the house! Isn't that sad??
Plus I was trying not to disturb Harv who is avoiding baseball.
But you're using a computer. You can get the radio through that - like I am.
mccarver:
"you can almost feel the apprehension in the crowd. what if the red sox win today ... matsuzaka tomorrow ... buchholz next friday ..."
hahahahahahaaa
Maybe if you put it on really low it won't disturb Harvey, whose team is fading away.
Oh that's great! Whether or not it happens, it's still fucking great.
That's 3!
Papi!!
The best part of listening to this game is it means I have headphones on, which means I can't hear my annoying coworker.
Radio through the computer! Why didn't I think of that?
Sigh, sometimes I am such a Luddite.
But I have the TV sound on now. Annoying, but while Harv is out, I will tolerate the Fox assholes.
When we have gamethreaders following on GDGD, I always wonder (and often say) why they don't use MLB Audio. $15 for the entire season, and you can always get the feed you want.
You're no Luddite. You're not even a technophobe. You have a cell phone, you text, you're on Facebook, you comment on blogs. You use Google Reader!
I know people who will read my blog, then say, I wanted to leave a comment but I couldn't figure out how to register.
LOL! I guess it's all relative. I know I am definitely more adept at this stuff than many my age. People do think I am strange or cool for using Facebook, depending on their perspective.
My sister in law said she still needs to call her kids to get help with things like cut and paste. I was dumbfounded. Even my almost 80 year old mother can do that. She is even on Facebook!
NYTimes had a nice piece today about Francona and how he deserves recognition for what he has done this season.
Uh oh, Harvey is returning.
My mother has a computer but refuses (or can't, not sure which) learn how to save, copy and paste. It's maddening. Or it used to be - I gave up trying.
I also know some serious technophobes, people who think that they'll compromise some kind of integrity if they get a cell phone. No comprendo.
Everyone's on facebook these days. I have a 93 year old cousin with dementia who's on facebook.
Ha ha, sounds like you're a kid and your parents are home. Harvey's home, hide the Red Sox! :)
Though I wouldn't call her a luddite either.
Not everyone...
Yeah, he's a luddite.
Not everyone, Benjamin. I know lots of people who are not. But anyone can be.
I take pride in being one of the early ones over 50 to be on Facebook as I joined back in 2003 or so when you needed to have a .edu email address. The benefits of being an academic!
In Canada, it almost is everyone. Higher percentage of people on FB here than any other country.
Yes, Laura, that's how it feels!
But he walked in, said hi, and went to his office. Maybe he will secretly watch on his computer.
Canada is cool
All that ice and everything. :)
Allan is a Luddite? That would make file-sharing tough.
Srsly though, I don't see Facebook and Twitter as any mark of tech savvy. Do you?
He still scores games with a wooden pencil. :)
Annoying Co-Worker just said, "Laura, do you have time to look at some disgustingly cute pictures of my nieces and nephews?"
I said, Sorry, not during a Red Sox - Yankees game. Maybe tomorrow.
Maybe she'll forget.
FB couldn't be easier. I still just don't "get" Twitter. I am sure I could figure out how to use it, but I am not motivated. There is such a thing as information overload. I think Twitter would just cause me to crash and revert to the 1980s world.
He still scores games with a wooden pencil. :)
Nope! Pens only! Special felt-tips.
Is anyone else having trouble with Blogger? It keeps coming back Service Unavailable Error 503. And then it loses my comment. Not every time, but enough to make me MAD AS HELL.
He still scores games with a wooden pencil. :)
Can't keep that sharp for a whole game. And I don't want to end up like ol' Stanton Walker.
Service Unavailable Error 503
I have been getting that at home. I refresh and it comes in. I thought it had to do with my wireless connection at home.
We had a whole conversation about Twitter on another thread recently. Apparently I convinced you you *could* learn how to use it! Good! :)
I draw the line at Twitter. I already hate Facebook but find it very useful for activism. But Twitter, no. Just too much time-wasting.
Blogger is in the middle of a bunch of upgrades. That could be why. (Or not, who knows.)
OK, I will refresh instead of going Back and see if that works.
I only look at twitter when I want to know where the local vegan ice cream truck is, or if someone links to baseball trade/injury tweets.
jesus, rosenthal. if felix does not win the cy, it will be a friggin crime.
oh my - mcmoron making sense with silliness of wins!!
Quick Allan, turn on the radio, Castig is talking about college football.
Yes, you convinced me I COULD learn, but you also convinced me it was not worth the effort! Thanks!
OK, I will refresh instead of going Back and see if that works.
I think it was when going to a page. Not sure how comments will work.
My pleasure. :)
Quick Allan, turn on the radio, Castig is talking about college football.
No hurry. Whenever I turn it on, that will be the case.
(I will not be turning it on.)
Lester is so lovable.
Lars may be loveable too
I only look at twitter when I want to know where the local vegan ice cream truck is, or if someone links to baseball trade/injury tweets.
I search Twitter to see who is tweeting wmtc posts, and I sometimes click on Twitter links on FB. But I don't have an account.
On Fire dong, right here
Bummer, Fox is showing Texas/Oakland (1-1! Exciting!). So it's not on MLBXtra either. Lame.
Yes!!
OK, not a dong, but a half-dong.
I know everybody calls them "ground rule doubles", but couldn't GDGD at least get it right
What do you call them? I think "ground rule double" is correct, and "grounds rule double" is incorrect.
Ground rule double
Just Wikipedia, but still.
Rut-row, it's Royce Ring.
Damn, I have to go. We are meeting friends for dinner in Northampton. I guess I will be using my cellphone for updates---showing I am NOT a Luddite!
Royce "Count Duh" Ring"z"?
Royce "Won't Be Getting A" Ring
flo with a ringing single.
Papi!
BYE, ROYCE!!!!
That was fast!
I ducked out during a pitching change and came back to another pitching change! What'd I miss?
A Papi RBI!
Ground rule double
Just Wikipedia, but still.
Which says: "Ground rule double is also the misnomer used to refer to a fairly hit ball leaving the field as described in Major League Baseball (MLB) rules 6.09(e) through 6.09(h) results from a fair ball leaving the playing field in circumstances that do not merit a home run."
That entry is in dire need of some copy editing.
That entry is in dire need of some copy editing.
You can just about paste that in to any Wiki entry.
So you weren't referring to the phrase "ground rule double" but a specific circumstance that is not really one? Just guessing here, as you're not saying.
There it goes :)
not yet.
What do you call them? I think "ground rule double" is correct, and "grounds rule double" is incorrect.
"Automatic double" is preferable.
Uch, I have to go. :(
Enjoy the game. GO SOX!!!!
Bye Amy, have fun
"Automatic double" is preferable.
Why?
Because it's descriptive instead of misleading.
But it's a real baseball term.
"Automatic double" is a baseball term, and an old one too.
I was thinking Sterling says "automatic double", which would mean we could never use it, but he says "grounds rule double".
Dear Castig and OB:
Shut up about Joe Girardi, please.
Thank you,
A Sox fan getting sick of you
I prefer the older term "long hits" to "extra base hits".
Right, Sterling is "grounds rule double".
"Automatic double" is a baseball term, and an old one too.
I'll have to take your word for that. I grew up hearing ground rule double. And I'm old. :)
And "bingle" --
no one uses bingle any more.
All I'm saying is that "ground rule double" is not incorrect, it's a legitimate expression. Unlike, say, "runners in scoring position" to mean "runners on 2nd and 3rd".
What's a bingle?
Now there it goes.
All I'm saying is that "ground rule double" is not incorrect, it's a legitimate expression. Unlike, say, "runners in scoring position" to mean "runners on 2nd and 3rd"
Actually, that's a good example. "Ground rule double" is misleading, because it's a double that has nothing to do with ground rules. "Runners in scoring position" is misleading, because all runners are potentially in scoring position.
The only thing that makes them "right" is that people use those phrases in common usage. Which is fine but still annoying.
NAVA KILLS BASERUNNERS DEAD!
OUT!!!!!
Whoo-hoo
Kearns wasn't in scoring position.
that was not a bang bang play, dick.
THERE is the OF Dong.
There's the On Fire dong I called earlier!
Hmm Benjamin, that's something to consider. Could it be I'm using the equivalent of RISP all these years, but I don't realize it b/c that's how I learned it? Hmm.
CLEAN UP IN AISLE 7!!!!!!!
This Chad fellow is some pitcher, eh.
Extra Mart!!!!
Swisher saving Chad's sorry ass
Cool. I turn on the TV while I'm booting up the puter, and the VERY first thing I hear is "JD Dew hits one deep. And it's GONE!"
Holy Shit - Now a B2B! This could be fun
stockton and mccarver going ON AND ON about how bad the mfy have been playing and how they were 2.5 GA just a few days ago.
Girardi needs a 25-man pitching staff, the way he uses his bullpen
How about "Yankee faithful"? Is that a misnomer?
Hee hee.
SoSock: You know where that bus is parked? We may need it next week.
I'm sitting on the bench beside it right now. They're gassing it up.
rosenthal: "every other AL playoff contender is LOVING this"
This is where NYY fans bitch that McCarver totally hates the Yankees.
This is pretty cool, by the way.
I have to go. Amy's not here to text me the score on my way home.
A, call my cell?
Leaving 3 hours early today, yay.
both guys saying it is the quiest crowd they have ever heard in that dump
It IS pretty damn quiet.
And I agree Benjamin - that is cool
No time to thread tonight, but it's a fun game again tonight. Let's hope it stays that way.
And yes to the schadenfraud.
Just saw the replay of V-Mart's homer. That was a laser shot
both guys saying it is the quiest crowd they have ever heard in that dump
Radio saying that too.
RE: the quiet - perhaps they're having visions of a certain previous meltdown.........
perhaps they're having visions of a certain previous meltdown.........
that is what happens when you are cursed.
K-ROD!
Bard up. Have I mentioned lately that he's a Tarheel.... :)
K-ROD!
Scu-Scu-Scutaro
bard in, reddick in rf, patterson was in lf last inning
lester: 7-2-0-3-8, 104
mcmoron: "bard can get close to 100"
close to?
Hey - 102 is close
Shit - that was a damn strike
FUCK JTC!
why is joba throwing to first -- no one is there!!! -- and why is kalish not allowed to third?
Woo hoo! At the end of the 8th I thought - "OK, let's get another run or 2 for a better cushion, but let's not go too long. I have a dinner date!" Then I saw JTC take the mound and changed my tune. Let's score 5 or 6 just because it's him. (No, I don't really like him at all)
SHIT! FauX has switched to the Rangers game - What's happening in the terlet?
Rangers clinch AL West.
OK, crisis over. Rangers have clinched. Back to real baseball
9th vs Joba:
Lowrie double to LF corner (Navarro pinch runs)
Kalish (bb) double to RF corner, Navarro scores, 7-2
Patterson (cbf) K
Anderson (bbcsb) BB
Scutaro (bfc) K, 2 outs
Reddick (cbcbf) 5-3. Very close, though, ump paused a beat before calling out, I'd like to see a slo-mo replay.
jeemer in
(Fruitbat up)
Slappy (bcb) HR to left, 7-3
bot up, too
rays with 4 in bottom of 1st!
Cano (c) lined to pitcher, 1 out
Thomas (cb) P6 on outfield grass.
Enough morons left to go "DAY-O, DAY-O", though.
Gardner (ccbb) 3U

The water is Muddy!!!
Now 5.5 GB in WC!
Red Sox still mathematically alive?
Did he think they would not be if they had lost?
