10 Runs On 16 Hits

I was born on October 16, so I like it when I see a team has scored 10 runs on 16 hits. Sixteen hits seems like a "reasonable" number of hits for a 10-run showing, so it must happen with some frequency.

Or does it?

I looked at a few random seasons, thanks to Baseball Reference's Play Index. In any given season, I searched for games in which a team scored 10 runs, then sorted them by the number of hits.

It would appear that 10/16 simply catches my eye like a shiny penny.

Most and fewest hits for a team scoring 10 runs (in nine innings)?

23 (here & here) and 4 (here & here)

  1. Happy Birthday, and I hope you enjoy the day, Allan.

I was born on January 4th, so I've seen one run on four hits on a few occasions...

  2. Cool - happy birthday!

Maybe I'll get a PI subscription to check 6 runs, 11 hits.

Did you look up if there was ever a game with as many errors to make up your actual full birth date? ;)

  3. Happy birthday from me too, Mr October!

How often has 10/16 happened on 10/16???

  4. BRef's PI is only 1920-2010, so it is limited.

The record for errors by one team in a game is 24 -- by Boston against St. Louis in the NL, June 14, 1876. The infield made 17 errors. St.L made 16 errors, so there were 40 in that game!

(On May 1, 1876, the Boston outfield made 11 errors.)

The post-1900 error record is 12, by the Tigers against the White Sox in 1901 and the White Sox against the Tigers in 1903.

I have seen boxes of National Association games (pre-NL, 1871-75) with 26+ errors, though.

(And Cleveland made 7 errors in the 8th inning against the White Sox on September 20, 1905.)

  6. How often has 10/16 happened on 10/16???

    Never!

Assuming 10/16 is only in the post-season, these are the only teams with 10 runs and 16 hits:

    Oct 9, 1919 - WS8 - CIN vs CWS
    Oct 8, 1960 - WS3 - NYY vs PIT
    Oct 4, 1978 - ALCS2 - KC vs NYY
    Oct 14, 1986 - ALCS6 - BOS vs CAL
    Oct 22, 2002 - WS3 - ANA vs SFG

That happened 71 times in 2010.

BOS did it twice: June 15 (4 days late!!) and July 26.
