G86: Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 4

Blue Jays - 102 000 001 - 4 10 0
Red Sox - 110 400 00x - 6 11 0
With two outs in the fourth inning, trailing Toronto 2-3, the Red Sox finally battered Romero the way they (almost) always do:

J.D. Drew double off the Wall
Darnell McDonald single off the Wall (3-3)
Jarrod Saltalamacchia single to CF
Yamaico Navarro double off the Wall (4-3)
Jacoby Ellsbury double off the Wall (5-3)
Marco Scutaro walk
Dustin Pedroia 1-3

Wakefield (7-9-3-1-7, 106) kept the Jays in check, and Daniel Bard, Dan Wheeler (who finished the eighth inning after a 40-minute rain delay), and Jonathan Papelbon closed it out. It was Wakefield's 184th Red Sox win and the 198th victory of his career.

Ellsbury and Kevin Youkilis each homered (leading off the first and second innings, respectively) and doubled twice. Ellsbury (now 13-for-27 since June 29, .481) drove in three runs and stole a base.

The Yankees lost to Cleveland 5-3 [Masterson: 8-3-0-2-6, 112], so the Red Sox are 0.5 GB in the East.
Example
Ricky Romero / Tim Wakefield

Adrian Gonzalez gets the night off. He had started all of Boston's previous 85 games this year. In his last eight games, he's hitting .219 (7-for-32) with a .618 OPS, and has "a bit of a stiff neck apparently".

Wakefield's last outing (July 1, in Houston) was the first start in his career that he had pitched more than 2.1 innings and did not record a walk or a strikeout (5.1-11-5-0-0, 91). Wakefield's only other start with no BB or K was for the Pirates on September 7, 1992.

Romero has a 1.49 ERA in his last four starts, including a complete-game shutout of the Cardinals on June 26. However, among teams that have faced him more than once, the Red Sox hit him best, by far (.350/.441/.550/.991 in 10 starts; 70 hits and 32 walks in 48 innings; 2.125 WHIP, 7.69 ERA).

AL East: Rays/Twins at 1 PM and Yankees/Spiders at 7 PM.

  6. I fucking haaaaaaaate buck martinez. So obnoxious. Would switch to WEEI but the delay to picture ratio is horrendous.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 3-1 pitch hit the mitt at the exact same time as WEEI so my hopes were up.

Then they said it was the first pitch to scutaro.

  8. Hey L, no meeting tonight?

    How is tala doing?

  9. I know that older man who have a full head of hair like to show it off, but man does Buck Martinez need to update his look. He looks like something out of Happy Days.

  10. Not that I can see him tonight. I noticed this last night.

  11. who is with castig? i do not like him. often blathers on with some cute thing when he should be giving the basics.

there was a 3-1 pitch to scutaro and he said it goes to the backstop but scutaro was not thinking about taking an extra base - but he did not tell us that it was ball 4 and a walk.

and just now with pedroia up, he said pedroia swung and the jays are hoping it goes foul. but he did not say that it was on the foul line - or which foul line.

this is radio. we can't see these things. you have to describe them.

  12. whoever that guy is: snider "popped up ... to deep right"

  13. I just realized this must be Dale Arnold. Last time I didn't know who was with Castig that's who it was.

  14. Darnell! He's hitting lately, his BA must be up to, maybe, .170 by now? :)

  15. Loooove those 2-out rallys!!!

  16. For those of you without nesn. Heidi talked to Farrell about why there have been so many ejections lately. He talked at length about how on the field play has not kept up with technology. So, with replay, you know about the bad calls. He then went on to say that the Players and coaches are the only ones who *have* to comment and that there should come a time when the umpires actually involved in the calls have to discuss them. Nice bit.

Wow, all this typed on my phone. Sorry for any typos.

    Keep on hitting, boys. .

  19. This excellent rally was started by the first two batters, who required Romero to throw 13 pitches just to get 2 outs and then On Fire made him through another 5 before he drilled it. I think they flat wore him out this inning.

    Sweet!

  20. 3rd not covered and LBJ steals it!

  24. If Wake finishes with more wins than the TCM and Cy IMO Wake has to be considered for the HOF.

  26. WTF? How do you call time and still swing?

    ReplyDelete
  27. He is everywhere!! Laura, has he been in your basement again?

    What??????

    ReplyDelete
  28. LBJ could have hurt himself on a dead ball. WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  29. we have only radio, but they were very annoyed that slow-as-shit mcclelland did not call time until after the batter swung -- complete BULLSHIT

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yep. Batter said time as Wake is delivering. Then after the swing, ump puts his hands out. Why honor that?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I cant believe that was not a triple

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jay (my husband) says it would be interesting to mic the umps. Can you imagine??

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh Ricky, we'll miss you! Babalu!

  35. Ah rats, was hoping for the LBJ triple!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've been predicting LBJ will hit for the cycle this season. I'm always hoping!

    ReplyDelete
  37. TV shows a great replay. As he is headed toward second, LBJ was looking for a sign from Bogar about going to third. It looks like he never got it and had to stop at second. He put his hands out as he is reaching second as if to say, what should I do?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just got home from a long car trip and the HORROR SHOW that is Dale Arnold attempting to do play-play (when not adding snarky idiotic color commentary).

I see Allan is stuck with him too. Glad I'm home.

  39. Hi guys. Been following some on my phone. It's just kinda hard to comment here. And for some reason I can't get gdgd to come up on it. I thought I had done it before but maybe not. Anyway, stuck with spiders v mfy here so leaning on JoS for the skinny. Later!

  42. Rain delay eh? Spiders up 5-0 top 9 but their reliever gives up 3 straight hits. 5-1 now with 2 on and bringing in Perez.

  44. Over in Cleveland. 5-3 Arachnids. K looking to end the game. Love how the announcers say "Jeter and the Yankees lose". As if he IS the team

    ReplyDelete
  45. Three outs away from a half game back.

  49. Archiving! What's the word on Lester?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hehe. Archiving. Gotta love autospell. Announcers on Sportscenter just alluded to a longer spell than originally thought. Or are they just being instigators?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Damn, I hate Papelbon.

Just dropping in to let you know how I feel.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I can't remember what I read!
