G69: Red Sox 5, Orioles 1

Red Sox - 001 030 100 - 5 9 0
Orioles - 000 000 100 - 1 4 2
Chris Sale did not draw attention to himself because of his terrific outing (6-2-1-4-9, 109) and increased velocity as the Red Sox swept the Orioles. It was because of the numerous F-bombs he launched at the umpire from the dugout.

When Sale was pulled from the game after walking the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, he yelled a few things towards plate umpire Brian Knight as he left the field. Just as Sale crossed the foul line, Knight ejected him. Sale continued his rant at Knight from the dugout. It was highly unusual behaviour from the chronically unflappable Sale.

Knight was probably wondering: Can I eject him again?

WEEI's John Tomase's article made it seem like Sale was annoyed at Knight's calls in the seventh, but he called those pitches correctly.

Sale to Mark Trumbo:

Sale to Craig Gentry:

What pissed Sale off was calls like the one Knight made in the third inning, with Joey Rickard at the plate. Note Pitch #2, which Knight judged to be outside the zone. Two pitches later - Pitch #4 - Knight called an almost identical pitch a strike.

Tomase mentioned Sale being squeezed on "ball four in the fourth to load the bases". Trumbo did walk on a questionable pitch in that inning (Pitch #9), but the Orioles never loaded the bases in the game.

Mookie Betts's 18th home run of the year gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead in the third.

Two innings later, Betts walked with one out. Andrew Benintendi also walked, ending Yefry Ramirez's debut (4.1-4-3-2-6, 97). Mike Wright's first pitch to Xander Bogaerts got rolled a few feet away from catcher Austin Wynns and Betts alertly went to third. Bogaerts lined to right and Mookie scored. Wright walked J.D. Martinez. Rafael Devers and Eduardo Nunez followed with run-scoring singles.

Martinez went deep to right-center in the seventh for his 22nd dong of the season.

Sale did not allow a hit until there was one out in the fourth. He hit Trumbo with a pitch in the second and issued a one-out walk in the third. In the fourth, Danny Valencia got Baltimore's first hit and Trumbo walked with two outs. Trey Mancini singled to lead off the sixth.

Brandon Workman took over after Sale walked two to start the seventh. Trumbo eventually scored on a sac fly.

Note: The Red Sox's linescore is a palindrome.
