David Ortiz Shot In Santo Domingo; Full Recovery Is Expected

UPDATE:
Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital, around 8:50 p.m. when a gunman who had gotten off a motorcycle approached from behind and shot him at close range, according to the Associated Press. Ortiz was taken to a medical facility where he underwent surgery, and his condition was stable, Bautista said.

Ortiz's father, Leo Ortiz, told reporters early Monday that ... he spoke to the doctor who operated on his son, and that no damage was done to his major arteries or organs. He said his son was expected to make a complete recovery. ...

Doctors who treated retired Red Sox slugger David Ortiz after he was shot Sunday night in Santo Domingo had to remove part of his intestines, colon, gall bladder and liver, according to published reports. ...

In a video interview posted by CDN 37, a man at the scene of the shooting said the bullet entered Ortiz's back and exited his stomach. Surveillance video that was posted on social media by El Nuevo Diario, a Dominican newspaper, appeared to show a man approach Ortiz from behind and fire a gun at his back. In the video, Ortiz collapses from the chair he is sitting on as those around him scatter.
Peter Abraham, Globe:
Leo Lopez, a man in the DR I know is close to David Ortiz, told @Enrique_Rojas1 that David’s surgery was more complicated than initial reports suggested. He had damage to some internal organs but is recovering.

Dominican Republic television station CDN reported that David Ortiz was shot in the lower back Sunday night in Santo Domingo and was taken to a nearby hospital. The incident was classified by police as a calculated attack. Ortiz is in stable condition and his father states that a full recovery is expected.

Two tweets reported:
The emergency doctor says that David Ortiz said "Please. Don't let me die, I'm a good man." Shot between the left side of the lower back and came out through the abdomen

Police in the Dominican Republic are saying the gunshot wound suffered by David Ortiz was not from an attempted robbery, as initially speculated. Alleged video of the incident shows a man walking up to a bar, aiming almost point blank and firing a gun.
Pedro Martinez:
I'm at peace knowing you out of danger; you a strong man Compai, can't wait to hear your voice. My thoughts and prayers are with you, see you soon.
SoSH thread.

John Tomase:
Updated story says Ortiz was shot in back and bullet exited through his stomach, which obviously sounds a lot more serious than being shot in the leg.
Marly Rivera:
I just spoke to @dSoldevila who is at the clinic where David Ortiz is currently being treated. Dionisio said me that the attending doctor told him that David was shot in the lower back and the bullet went through and through; he’s currently in surgery.
SoSHer sxmbnt:
Shot once through the back (bullet exited through belly) and bullet then hit a second person who was with him. Scene was chaotic and he was taken to hospital in a nearby SUV. This all occurred in a crowded outdoor bar, with David facing inward with back turned away from street where shooter was standing. I don't think it was a robbery

The guy who drove Papi is my friend's Dad, met him once - really genuine guy (also has the nicest car collection I've ever seen) He was sitting at the table next David when the shooting happened and I believe his SUV was valeted right out outside which is why that was chosen instead of being taken by ambulance.
