G3: Orioles 7, Red Sox 4

Orioles - 201 300 001 - 7 10 1
Red Sox - 010 012 000 - 4 7 0
Poor starting pitching doomed the Red Sox for the second day in a row, as Ryan Weber (3.2-6-6-3-0, 65) did not get out of the fourth inning. He left after giving up his second home run of the day, which put Baltimore up 6-1. The Orioles' bullpen did not break a sweat over the final three innings.

Four of the six runs scored off Weber came with two outs. He got the first two outs in the top of the first, but allowed a single to José Iglesias and a first-pitch home run to Rio Ruiz. He walked Anthony Santander (whose last name is no longer Americanized and is pronounced Sahn-ten-dare) and was hit for a run-scoring double by Iglesias. Weber gave up a single and a walk to begin the fourth. He got two outs, though a run did score, and then Santander homered into the bullpens.

Iglesias finished the afternoon 4-for-5 and was 7-for-13 in the series, the first time he's had seven hits in a three-game series in his career.

Wade LeBlanc (5.2-4-4-0-4, 76) and his "soft salad" frustrated the Red Sox's bats. Their only hit through five innings were solo home runs by Christian Vázquez in the second and Kevin Pillar in the fifth. Jackie Bradley began the sixth with a single and Rafael Devers lined a two-out double into the left field corner. Miguel Castro came in and Xander Bogaerts grounded a single into left, scoring two runs and making LeBlanc's line look worse than he actually pitched.

Marcus Walden worked out of trouble in the seventh caused by a leadoff double and a one-out walk. In the eighth, plate umpire Alan Porter forced Matt Barnes to get four outs. Porter failed to ring up Chance Sisco on an obvious 1-2 strike (pitch #4) and Sisco eventually walked.
DJ Stewart also walked, though ball four may have caught some of the outside black. Austin Mays swung and missed two inside fastballs and struck out. Santander popped to center and Iglesias grounded back to Barnes.

Baltimore added a run in the ninth on Hanser Alberto's single and Chris Davis's double. Davis thought his double high off the left-center wall was gone, and he watched it for a while before deciding to run. Then he took off from second, assuming Nunez's fly to left would scrape the wall. It did not and Davis was easily doubled up. (Davis's confusion should not surprising, considering he's on base so infrequently.)

That additional run made a comeback much more difficult. Pinch-hitter Andrew Benintendi looked bad whiffing on a splitter. Vázquez singled with two outs but Alex Verdugo chased a high fastball from Cole Sulser for the final out.

Next Up: The Mets visit Fenway Park for two games.
