First Pitch: El Bencho!

(A SoSH lurker who claims to know Millar's mother says the Sox hope to have Dave Roberts there as well!)

SF Chronicle:

"Paul Byrd, the veteran pitcher who has helped the Cleveland Indians reach the brink of the World Series, bought nearly $25,000 worth of human growth hormone and syringes from a Florida anti-aging clinic that was targeted by law enforcement for illegally distributing performance-enhancing drugs, business records show.

"Byrd made 13 purchases from the Palm Beach Rejuvenation Center between August 2002 and January 2005, according to the records. During those years, he pitched for the Kansas City Royals, the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Angels.

"Paying with a credit card, Byrd spent $24,850 to buy more than 1,000 vials of growth hormone, an injectable prescription drug with muscle-building properties, and hundreds of syringes."

He echoed my thoughts exactly. But shouldn't he be asleep at 4:30AM? He's got a big party to attend tonight...

And I love the choices for first pitches! Maybe while Millar is throwing the pitch, Dave Roberts can steal a base off him. Hmmm... 'stealing the first base'. Sounds good to me.

Oh, and BTW, all the talk about nervousness and anticipation before the game yesterday- was so short-lived! It's great!

Yankees charged Joe Torre, players for road hotel expenses

"The Yankees had the nerve to dock chronically injured pitcher Carl Pavano for the grand sum of $17.97. ...

Torre was frugal by comparison - but his $39.98 bill for grilled chicken, two Amstel Lights and a pay-per-view movie didn't escape the notice of the Bronx bean-counters.

At the same time, the records show the team's front office wasn't nearly as tough about its own spending habits.

During the October playoffs, execs charged thousands of dollars for food and liquor to the team's accounts.

An Oct. 9 invoice from Center Plate, the stadium concessionaire, was for $260 for a "runner." A $120 tip was added to the bill, which was signed by Joel White, director of concession. There is no record that White's paycheck was docked for such generosity. ...

But the great Yankees, who somehow managed to dock the most famous manager in baseball $39 for a few beers, still haven't adequately accounted for millions of dollars in rent money owed to the city."

Of all this morning's slicing and dicing of our man, Tito has the simplest explanation: here http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/10/21/matsuzaka_is_prepared_to_take_it_to_limit/

Dice-K just didn't want to sulk alone in his hotel room. He'll be fine. IT IS ON!!

Thanks, RS. I still can't get the <> down.

El Bencho?!? That's fucking awesome. First he graces us with his Fox clip of cheer and now he's throwing the first pitch. Is there anything this man can't do to motivate us? I know he's interested in another year with the Os but I hope he comes back. He belongs to Boston...

allan said...

As long as Cabin Mirror doesn't demand to pinch-hit, he is welcome at Fenway. (Is he bringing a bag of dog shit for Tito?)

It would be nice if Fox let fans at home see the first pitch -- especially if KFK and Mr. Dave Roberts will be there.

Colin said...

He could bring a bag of whatever to Francona because that Fox clip or something must've worked some crazy magic/mojo on us.

yeah i was bummed that we didnt get to see billy mueller throw out the first pitch last night.

im not sure, i kinda want to see him snap out of it and his defense (for now) is better and in a game 7 thats big. but jocoby made an instant impact offensively last night (AND THAT FCUKING HUGE)
start the kid?

Colin said...

I said it in the previous blog entry, but early run support and finding some way to figure Westbrook out are our best bets to ensure a win. I'm confident in Dice-K, but with the Schilling start as well, a 9-10 run lead is one helluva comfy cushion.

I'm not worried about hitting Westbrook, but Tito also has to have a short leash on Dice.

Luckily, it's clear when Dice is slipping. Lester takes a while to warm -- maybe he could start throwing in the first? :>) I assume Tek will be able to handle Wake for an inning or two.

There could be some creative choices out of the pen -- luckily, Playoff Tito is here.

Naturally, it would be good to come out of the gate like last night and give Dice some wiggle room.

If Dice gets thru four and we have a lead, Tito better go straight to the pen at the first sign of trouble.

I may be babbling.

6 and 13 ...

BTW, if you haven't read them yet, Jose's KEYS are up. A good way to make that 6 hours and 2 minutes...

No...no babble there. It makes sense. Like I said though I like seeing when the Sox play an opposing pitcher/reliever like a fiddle, hence my emphasis on figuring Westbrook out early.

Ian Browne writes about the "an air of confidence that permeated throughout the Red Sox's clubhouse late Saturday night".

Ortiz:
You can't give up because you're down. We've been down before and we know how to come out. All the new kids around, they're seeing that. The older guys, we keep it together.

Papelbon:
We've got momentum. Right now, we're in a comfort zone with this last game. We feel comfortable, we're at our own home, and we have firepower in our bullpen.

Ortiz:
We're not comfortable, we're confident. This is it. This is where you want to be. I like to be in this situation.

Lowell:
You have to look at it as one game you want to win, and tomorrow's game is really no different for us than today's game or two days ago. The implications are the same. We win, we go on. We lose, we go home.

Ortiz:
[The fans are] going to be crazy tomorrow, dude, just crazy.

Lugo:
We go home or they go home. We're not expecting to go home.

Ortiz, on having Beckett pitch relief:
Hopefully, we don't have to. I don't want to waste my man out there tomorrow. Hopefully, we score 10 runs in the first, so we have my man dressing up for something else.

***

Since 1999, the Red Sox have played 16 post-season elimination games. Their record -- 13-3.

brendotroy said...

redsock, I love the quotes, and I'm especially glad to hear that the guys are "not comfortable, confident." But, I've gotta say, I'm not there with the "this series was won last night" crowd - no offense meant at all. Maybe I'm overly pessimistic, but I won't be even close to comfortable until we've put some runs on the board and DiceK's settled down (if that ever happens) ... until that happens, I think that this play-in game is too uncertain. I am hoping, praying, reviewing DiceK, and obsessively planning the different bullpen scenarios, but I'm not super confident quite yet. Hopefully that'll come in the second or so.

Meanwhile, on a more positive note, it is a gorgeous day to win a pennant in Boston! Webcam view here.

I'm with you Brendotroy. The team can't lose focus. We only won a game last night - not the series. The Indians are gonna come out swinging just like the Sox did in game 5. Sox MUST be in the ZONE until the very last out.

nixon33 said...

they are showing game 6 of '86 world series on espn classic.

allan said...

I know the series is tied 3-3, but last night's game was a huge shift in momentum for the Sox. Cleveland should/could be more rattled than they were last night. Let's hope Dice is on his game.

I'm watching the game tonight at a sports bar, with some guys, so I don't have to deal with my kids and with my wife's questions, like, why are there only 3 outs in an inning, etc. Have fun tonight.

nixon33 said...

i see everyones point of view.
but i have to agree with redsock...the indians are fucking rattled. dicek will be big tonight. if not we have 1000 pitchers.
key is the offense to keep rolling, ROY is hot, youk, papi, manny, lowell, DREW...hopefully it keeps rollin'!

Amy said...

Damn, still four hours til game time. This day, beautiful as it is, seems endless.

I am nervous, but I refuse to allow myself to think negatively about tonight. I believe that our bats are really hot, that Westbrook will not outsmart our guys this time, and that DiceK is due for a better outing. Even if he only makes it to the fifth, we have lots of rested arms in the pen.

Plus they are home, Millar is there throwing out the first pitch, and the crowd will be crazy. (By the way, I didn't see any red socks being waved last night, thank goodness. Those Fenway fans are way too smart for that.)

Byrd talked to Rosenthal about HGH:

Yes, Indians righthander Paul Byrd admits to taking human-growth hormone. In his upcoming book, "The Free Byrd Project," he even writes about resisting the temptation to use an increased dosage with the hope of throwing harder.
Byrd says he never hid his use of HGH because it was prescribed to him under a doctor's care. He paid for the substance with his own credit card. At one point, he had it sent in his name to the Braves' spring-training facility in Kissimmee, Fla. Byrd says he no longer takes HGH and has not taken it this season.

Amalie Benjamin:

"Matsuzaka will be on an extremely limited leash tonight. He has to be. Once he gets in trouble, manager Terry Francona will reach back to his bullpen for whoever is there, whoever he has most faith in -- and that very likely will include Josh Beckett ...

"Can the Indians still win this thing? Technically, sure. But being on the brink of heading to the World Series and losing two straight games doesn't exactly bode well for them. The Red Sox have the momentum. And they have a very, very determined starter. He needs this game, this performance, almost as much as the Red Sox need it as a whole."

I enjoyed last night's game in Nevada, the first part on the radio in the car. It's Joe Morgan on ESPN radio, I mean you just can't get away from the guy. They made a huge deal out of the "pressure" on LBJ, as well as the way Carmona's strike zone was treated (it sounded like legitimately so). But listening on the radio really didn't rob the DJ Grand Slam of any of its excitement. I had to read the comments following that HR as soon as we got back. Maybe it was a facile prediction, but I did say that at least one of our downtrodden (Lugo, Crisp, or Drew) would come through in a big way. Maybe it's more accurate to say that we would have been screwed if none of them did at some point.

We watched the rest from a casino, and there certainly wasn't much suspense. I feel pretty confident about tonight, but there's that anything-can-happen feeling as well. It's all very well to say that there are folks to back up Matsuzaka, but if he has problems, a certain amount of damage will already be done. But on the other hand, I believe in our bats and don't think Westbrook will be baffling our fellas tonight. And, there's a good chance that Dice will have more success than he has had recently.

On the other other hand, will Hafner snap out of it? Will Sizemore win a beauty contest vs. LBJ? Will a fight break out in my sports bar here in San Francisco and disrupt my viewing?

Shit -- it's on, indeed. I haven't been this excited about a game in a while. I'll be thinkin' of Laura every time they show her boy's handsome mug. All my emotional preparations for losing have been undone. If we lose it, this one's gwine to hurt! If we win...when we win...it's a gonna be nice.

Here's to victory and the World Series.

Nope, same place for me tonight. It's the only time I've wished I was staying in a hotel... I have a rented house here, with no TV and no cable (which wouldn't have helped without a TV anyway, but I guess I would've went out and fucking bought one. You can always return it after we win the WS...).

Anyway, it's OK. I'm a quiet fan, not confrontational, and they're gonna be awfully quiet with our big ass lead. So, it's all good.

laura k said...

David said...

Let's get it on!!

Amy said...

I assume they will show Millar throwing the first pitch? I missed Mueller last night.

allan said...

Actually, I screwed up ALDS 1, then ALDS 2 was not shown on TV up here for the first inning or so.

I have all the ALCS games. If things go as planned, there maybe another Mega Box Set!

thatdietcokegirl said...

yoda is so cool (as always:))

laura k said...

we didn't see pro last night either. i won't count on fox showing us cabin mirror either. or if they do, our canadian feed might not have it.

thatdietcokegirl said...

isn't it supposed to be started, wth???

they better show millah.

s1c said...

ALCS Drew -- .381/.409/.571

Fragging weei losers take note.

Second delivery accepted, if my spelling / posting becomes irrational you know who to blame!!

(if only I could get her to wear a saucy cocktail waitress outfit)

Amy said...

That's annoying. I want to see the crowd go nuts for Millar.

Amy said...

Love that sign: "We never wave a white flag at Fenway." Damn straight.

allan said...

Fenway sign:

"We never wave a white flag at Fenway"

laura k said...

oops, i forgot about the alds trouble. oh well, we'll get the boxed set after we win the ws.

brendotroy said...

Why does life have to get in the way of baseball?

Tell me about it. I travel most heavily (as in, gone 12/14 days) during the Fall, which occasionally means seeing games at a lot of parks, but generally means I watch games alone or with strangers. For Game Seven of '04, I made friends with more Sox-fan strangers at a bar in downtown Indianapolis than I would've ever thought possible. I hugged at least three grown men who I didn't know. It was great.

laura k said...

man, i should have a shot of jd every day. i feel so much better now!

s1c said...

Lord Lynch - Don't know if you saw this but Hamilton still has a chance.

Fragging Fox, you can't show the Millar pitch? gawd I hate fox sports.

Amy said...

Baseball, like music, the universal language, Brendotroy.

laura k said...

"michael lowell, the biggest eyebrows in baseball"

David said...

This is odd. Will the Orioles let him go?

Amy said...

Millar, what a hoot and a half!

laura k said...

HERE WE GO!

s1c said...

Amy said...

I like this---Allan counting down, Laura counting up.

Fastballs----perhaps he isn't going to do all that annoying nibbling tonight?

nixon33 said...

1-2-3!!!!!!!
FUCK YOU PRONK!

Rob said...

Anybody notice that Dice has a different swagger about him tonight. He looks confident. He looks like a fierce competitor on the mound tonight.

I think tonight we are seeing the Big Game Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Anybody else notice that? Just looking in the close-ups, etc.

Colin said...

Pronk miss ball.

To all the fans on the road in hotels and bars: I'm completely sympathetic. I "watched" the Buckholz no-no from GDGD on a weak wifi signal in a hotel in boston. No NESN in the bar. It was brutal. Exciting. But brutal.

Amy said...

Shoot. That's ok. Manny has to be Manny tonight. Come on, Manny.
